Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

  Sealing device to reduce gap losses in centrifugal pumps and fans.

   The invention consists in the arrangement of helical grooves on the conical sealing respectively. Running surfaces of the impeller. The conicity of the running surfaces, like the pitch of the helical grooves, is dependent on the pressure difference between the outer and inner annulus, in front of and behind the impeller. The sealing is not caused b) oss by the action of the screw-shaped nuton known per se for sealing purposes, but mainly by the centrifugal force, which is caused by the conicity of the running surfaces, thus by the increase in the diameter of the ducts.

   The invention is illustrated in the drawing in two exemplary embodiments. The impeller n (Fig.! And 2) or several impellers are mounted on the shaft w
 EMI1.1
   in order to avoid losses, they must be well sealed against each other.

     This sealing is achieved by an arrangement acting like a pump, which essentially consists in the fact that the outer (Fig. 3) or inner (Fig. 2 and 4) sealing surfaces of the rotating, annular impeller lugs provided with helical grooves c f and d are conical. Depending on the size of the pressure difference between the annular spaces 1 and 2, 4 and 3 in Fig. 1 or between the annular spaces 1 and 2, and 1 in Fig. 2, the pitch of the screw threads and the degree of conicity is determined.

   The rotation of the helical grooves creates a flow from the beginning 'h' 'helical groove towards its end and the groove therefore acts like a centrifugal pump, the pressure generated being higher, the greater the conicity of the lugs and the pitch of the screw groove . The centrifugal force resulting from the conicity of the
 EMI1.2
 grows with the square of the radius of the increasing grooves, whereby a better and more reliable sealing is achieved than with the known arrangements of screw grooves on cylindrical running surfaces.
