The invention relates to a method for connecting lead parts with plastic or rubber, in particular in the production of battery covers.
The usual structure of lead batteries or lead accumulators requires the lead terminals to be passed through the plastic battery cover. In these cases as well as when applying plastic or rubber to lead parts, it has not previously been possible to produce an absolutely tight connection between lead and plastic or rubber. In the case of batteries, these leaky connections result in contamination of the battery lid after a short period of operation, which manifests itself in the form of whitish, moist deposits.
The method according to the invention now provides for a pretreatment of the lead parts before they are connected with plastic or rubber. The method is characterized in that the lead parts are anodically anodized in 15 to 70% strength by weight sulfuric acid with a voltage of 1.5 to 12 V, a current density of 2 to 30 A / dm2 and a temperature of 10 to 60 C. the surface is oxidized and, after the lead parts have been rinsed and dried, the plastic or rubber with the parts prepared in this way is hot pressed and allowed to cool.
The lead parts are preferably placed in a galvano hanging drum, hexagonal drums made of Plexiglas with a perforation of 8 mm, a filling weight of about 10 kg and a mass of 300 mm in diameter and 600 mm in length have proven to be favorable. The galvanic drum is then immersed in the sulfuric acid, the drum being rotated by a motor at around 6 rev / min. The contact cables introduced through the drum axis are now connected to a power source in such a way that the parts to be treated are polarized as anode. Plates made of graphite or stainless steel are used as the cathode.
After switching on the current of around 1.5 to 12 V, a current density of 2 to 30 A / dm2 of fabric surface is achieved on the parts to be treated. After a treatment time of 2 to 30 minutes, a somewhat iridescent protective layer of lead dioxide-dioxide is obtained on the parts treated by this method, which can be tightly bonded with plastic or rubber after rinsing and drying. This connection is made in such a way that the plastic or rubber is pressed hot onto the pretreated lead parts and allowed to cool. The connection becomes extremely intimate and completely gas-tight, which cannot be achieved if the lead parts are not subjected to the aforementioned pretreatment.
Example: A favorable surface treatment of the lead parts was achieved if they were treated in 20% strength by weight sulfuric acid at a temperature of 25 ° C. for 5 minutes. The voltage chosen was 8 V, the current density being 15 A / dm2. The lead parts were hot pressed with the plastic battery cover, resulting in a completely gas-tight connection between lead and plastic.
