Letztere bestehen aus gezogenen Stahlrohren, die unten geschlossen sind und oben durch lösbare Deckel e, e abgeschlossen werden, welche unter dem Einflüsse von Druck- schrauben f, il stehen. In den Retorten b, bl sind Körbe g, g'angeordnet, welche zur Erzeugung des Sauerstoffs dienende Briketts k enthalten. Diese Körbe können indessen auch vollständig in Wegfall kommen, indem die Retorte die Briketts unmittelbar aufnimmt.
In jedem Falle lässt sich die Kühlung der Retorte leicht bewerkstelligen, u. zw. können die Retorten, wenn die sie bestreichende Luft zur Kühlung nicht genügen sollte, in der aus der Zeichnung ersichtlichen Weise in einen mit fliessendem kalten Wasser gefüllten Bottich i eingetaucht werden. Auch kann jede Retorte mit einem wassergekühlten Mantel umgeben werden.
Wie aus der Zeichnung ersichtlich ist, tritt der aus den Retorten b, b'kommende Sauerstoff vor seinem Eintritt in den Behälter a in ein druckfestes Rohr j über, das Absorptionsmittel, z. B. mit Sodalösung getränkten und auf einen Rost k liegenden Bimsstein enthält. Ein Anlasshahn 1, welcher im unteren Teile des Rohres i angebracht ist, ermöglicht das Abziehen der kondensierten Flüssigkeit, während durch Abnahme eines mit einem Vierkant versehenen Schraubdeckels das Rohr von innen zugänglich gemacht und sein Inhalt ausgewechselt werden kann.
Es ist selbstverständlich, dass der beschriebene Apparat, bei welchen die Retorten nur ein über den Rauminhalt der Beschickung wenig hinausgehendes Fassungsvermögen besitzen, nur zur Verwendung für solche Briketts geeignet ist, welche ihr Volumen bei der Erhitzung nicht stark vergrössern, wie z. B. die aus Perchlorat bestehenden Briketts. Wenn die verwendeten
Briketts sich bei der Erhitzung stark aufblähen und ausdehnen, so müssen die zur Vergasung dienenden Retorten ein entsprechend grösseres Fassungsvermögen erhalten.
