Bei dom Streckenstromschliesser nach Patent Nr. 22685 wird eine Reihe aufeinanderfolgender Stromschlüsse dadurch bewirkt, dass Quecksilber beim Zurückssiessen aus einem (tofiiss, in das es durch das Befahren des Stromschliessers gedrückt wurde, unter Tropfenbildung die Polo eines Stromkreises vorbindet. Nach dem Stamm-Patent wird der Stromschluss bewirkt zwischen dem Körper des StreckcnstromschMessers und einem metallenen Kontaktstück, u. zw. an der Stelle, wo der ausfliessende Quecksilberstrahl sich in Tropfen auflöst. Diese Anordnung verlangt nur eine Leitung von der Stromquelle zum Strecken strom- schliesser, wenn die Stromquelle mit einem Pol geerdet ist.
Es ist aber vielfach wünschens- wert, den Kontakt nicht an Erde zu legen, z. B. um das Eindringen vagabundierender Ströme zu verhindern. Alsdann ist auch der zweite Pol der Stromquelle isoliert an dem Stromschliesser anzuordnen.
