The invention relates to a method for the production of a polyester precondensate for polyester production using metallic catalyst combinations. The polyester precondensate produced has a catalyst content of more than 0.5% by weight, depending on the catalyst combination used. This precondensate can be used to produce polyesters with a very uniform polycondensation process.
The production of polyesters using metallic catalyst combinations is known.
However, these have the disadvantage of being sparingly soluble, so that undissolved catalyst residues have to be filtered off, either through the interposition of a filter between the transesterification and polycondensation vessel, or through intensive filtration of the polyester melt. This filtration must be done because undissolved solids
Particles in the finished polyester worsen its optical, electrical and mechanical properties.
This
Removal of undissolved particles must be done especially when the catalyst used
Contains metals or metal combinations from the group of antimony, lead, germanium and titanium, as these
Metals exhibit particularly poor solubility during the transesterification and the subsequent polycondensation. Surprisingly, it has now been found that these disadvantages in high concentrations by heating the
Suspensions of the finely powdered metals in alkanediol can be brought into solution under nitrogen and intensive stirring. It becomes a dicarboxylic acid or an ester of this acid containing the alkanediol
The suspension was added and this suspension was kept at temperatures from 1000 ° C. to the boiling point of the alkanediol for several hours.
At least 2 parts by weight of alkanediol should be used per part by weight of the catalyst. Alkanediol is understood to mean an alkanediol containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms.
To increase the boiling point of the alkanediol, it is also possible to work under pressure. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the metallic catalyst, which can consist of a mixture of metals or an alloy of the metals manganese, zinc, cadmium, lead, antimony, titanium or germanium or of a single metal from this group, is pulverized as finely as possible and well suspended in an alkanediol with vigorous stirring. Then 1 to 1000 times the amount of a dicarboxylic acid or an ester of this acid, based on the amount of catalyst, is added. If the catalyst used contains one or more metals from the group consisting of manganese, zinc, cadmium, lead, antimony or germanium, preferably 2 to 100 times the amount of dicarboxylic acid or an ester of this acid is added.
If the catalyst used contains titanium, however, because of the lower solubility of this metal, 10 to 1000 times the amount of dicarboxylic acid or its ester is preferably added. However, this does not impair the advantages of the invention, since this metal has an activity as a polycondensation catalyst that is 10 times higher than that of the rest.
This is followed by intensive stirring at temperatures from 100 ° C. to the boiling point of the alkanediol, optionally under pressure, until the acid and the catalyst are largely dissolved. The required dissolution times are between 1 and 100 hours, depending on the temperature of the alkanediol and depending on the metal at 1500C. The mixture obtained is filtered in order to free it from undissolved catalyst particles if necessary. The mixture is then either cooled or, in the case of the addition of acid, freed from excess alkanediol. One can also proceed in such a way that the reaction mixture is condensed to a desired degree of polycondensation.
If not all of the metallic catalyst has dissolved, the proportion dissolved in the reaction mixture (master batch) must be determined analytically. For the master batch it is advantageous, but not necessarily, to use those dicarboxylic acids and alkanediols from which the polyester, for the production of which the master batch (precondensate) is used, is composed. Possible dicarboxylic acids which can be used advantageously according to the invention are: aromatic dicarboxylic acids which contain 1 or 2 benzene rings and 8 to 20 carbon atoms or their low molecular weight dialkyl esters, the alkyl esters containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Particularly preferred acid components are: terephthalic, isophthalic, naphthalene- (2,6) -dicarboxylic and diphenyldicarboxylic acids.
In addition, however, aliphatic dicarboxylic acids containing 4 to 10 carbon atoms or their low molecular weight dialkyl esters can also be used, but preferably adipic and sebacic acids. Alkanediols containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms, 1,4-bis (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexane and 2,2-bis (4'-ss'-hydroxyethoxyphenyl) propane are used as the alcohol component.
Preferred alkanediols are: ethylene glycol, propanediol (1,3), butanediol (1,4) and diethylene glycol. Small amounts (0.01 to 1 mol%, based on the acid component used) of branching and crosslinking components (polyfunctional carboxylic acids, alcohols, hydroxycarboxylic acids) can also be used to prepare the precondensate. Examples of these components are: glycerol, erythritol, pentaerythritol, tricarballylic acid, trimellitic acid, dioxybenzoic acid and grape acid. With aliquots of the pre-condensate produced, thermoplastic polyesters can be produced under very uniform and reproducible polycondensation conditions which, when processed into threads, films, monofilaments and injection-molded articles, have excellent utility properties.
The aliquots of the precondensate used to achieve a certain catalyst concentration in polyester production can be added to the batch to be condensed as granules, as powder, in pieces, in molten or dissolved form. The time of addition can be chosen freely, at the beginning, during or at the end of the transesterification, at the beginning or during the polycondensation.
The following examples and comparative examples demonstrate the advantages of the invention; uniform and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
reproducible polycondensation, as is desired during a production process and
Usage of a single master batch for numerous production approaches.
Example 1 :
Production of the master batch: In a reactor with thermometer, nitrogen supply, stirrer and
Column with dephlegmator and cooler were 600 l of ethylene glycol and 25 kg of a finely powdered
Lead-antimony alloy (3: 7) added and well suspended over the course of 4 hours at 150 ° C. with vigorous stirring; 300 kg of terephthalic acid were then added in 3 portions of 100 kg each at an interval of 5 hours.
After 24 hours, most of the lead-antimony alloy had dissolved. Now the temperature has been increased to 2000C. After a further 24 hours, the terephthalic acid was completely dissolved. After distilling off
4751 ethylene glycol, the reaction mixture was filtered, discharged and allowed to solidify.
The master batch had an analytically determined lead content of 1.50% and an antimony content of 3.50%.
Polyester production:
600 kg of dimethyl terephthalate are dissolved in 305 1 of ethylene glycol and 300 g of calcium, dissolved in
60 l ethylene glycol, added. The transesterification was complete after 210 minutes and the transesterification mixture was pressed into a second reactor. After adding 3.53 kg of the master batch prepared above, the
Reaction mixture heated to 2750C and gradually applied a vacuum of 0.5 Torr. 120 min (polycondensation time) after reaching this vacuum, an intrinsic viscosity of 0.78 was reached. With the master batch produced above, 137 polycondensation batches could be produced, the polycondensation time being reproducible to 10 minutes.
Example 2:
Comparative example:
420 g of a pulverized lead-antimony alloy (Pb: Sb = 3: 7), 600 kg of dimethyl terephthalate and 300 g of calcium, dissolved in 60 l of ethylene glycol, were added to 305 l of ethylene glycol After 210 minutes, the transesterification was complete and the reaction mixture was pressed into a second reactor. There it was heated to 2750C and a vacuum of 0.5 torr was applied gradually. After 150 minutes of polycondensation under this vacuum, an intrinsic viscosity of 0.75 was reached.
When this approach was repeated, the polycondensation time could be reproduced to only 40 minutes.
Example 3:
In the reactor described in Example 1, 600 l of ethylene glycol and 40 kg of titanium powder (5 to 10 μm) were well suspended over the course of 4 hours at 180 ° C. with vigorous stirring. Then 300 kg of dimethyl terephthalate were added in 2 portions, first 150 kg in 5 h, then again 150 kg in a further 5 h. The temperature was then increased to 2000C. After a total of 60 hours, the reaction mixture was filtered and 475 liters of ethylene glycol were distilled off. In a second reactor, condensation was carried out up to an intrinsic viscosity of 0.45 and then discharged. The master batch had an analytically determined titanium content of 0.7%.
In an analogous manner, 100 polycondensation batches with 0.002% Ti (in the form of the master batch) as catalyst were made according to Example 1. The reproducibility of the polycondensation time was: t 15 min.
