p-DiazodiphenylaminsulfatAlle vorstehenden Herstellungsoperationen finden in gedämpfte Licht statt.

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

p-Diazodiphenylamine Sulphate All of the above manufacturing operations take place in subdued light.
In the above example, a cyan lithographic sheet was made. The associated sheet materials with magenta and yellow coatings (which together with the cyan sheet material form a complete three-color test system) were prepared in a similar manner using the same polyvinyl formal coating by using appropriately colored pigments, e.g. B. "Watchung Red RT 761 D" listed in the color index as red pigment 48 under the number "CI No. 15865", and "Benzidine Yellow YT 564 D" listed in the color index as yellow pigment 14 under the number "CI No. 21095", applied. All dye numbers mentioned above are taken from the 2nd edition 1956 of the Color Index.
The resulting lithographic sheetlike materials are used as films for testing color reproduction by exposing them (preferably by "back exposure" through the film substrate) through the camera positive which reproduces the corresponding color.
After exposure to ultraviolet light, each of the flat materials is covered with a developer solution, which is composed of 1 part by volume of n-propyl alcohol and 3 parts by volume of water, the 0, ego wetting agent (such as "Aquarex D" , a sodium sulphate of higher fatty alcohols).
The sheet material is then rubbed off with a lithographic wipe to remove the coating and with it some or all of the exposed diazo compound in the non-image areas. The flat materials are then rinsed with cold water and dried with blotting paper. A positive halftone image results.
The resulting flat material is still sensitive to light in the colored areas. Also, the colored areas do not reflect the true color at this point because the yellowish color of the diazonium photosensitive material is quite visible. The resulting sheet materials are therefore further treated in order to remove both the sensitivity and the color of the photosensitive layer.
In order to desensitize the previously unexposed areas, the flat materials are completely exposed in an exposure frame. Each sheet is then immersed in a bleach solution for approximately 1 minute, after which it is washed, rinsed in cold water and dried. The composition of a suitable bleach solution is as follows:
EMI3.1
<tb>
<tb> Weight <SEP> parts <SEP>
<tb> water <SEP> 82.60
<tb> sodium bisulfite <SEP> 0, <SEP> 99
<tb> dipotassium phosphate <SEP> 0.55
<tb> Monopotassium phosphate <SEP> 2, <SEP> 76 <SEP>
<tb> isopropyl alcohol <SEP> 13, <SEP> 10 <SEP>
<tb>
After bleaching, the flat materials show the true colors and their images correspond to the halftone images of the camera positives of the corresponding color separation.
When the three flat materials are superimposed in register on a white background, an exact "proof" of the three-color print is obtained, as it would result if the camera positives were used to make printing plates, of which color prints (called the "final corrections" are produced. The need for a final correction is greatly reduced or eliminated.
Although the coating resin used in this example was polyvinyl formal, any abrasion-resistant organophilic, hydrophobic, water-insoluble, solvent-softenable, resinous polymer may be used instead.
A number of such resins are disclosed in the aforementioned Austrian Patent No. 255894. It has been found, however, that when a resin coating is used as in the present example, a corresponding resin such as e.g. B. the above resinous copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile, should be used in the photosensitive layer in order to improve the bond of a) the photosensitive intermediate layer to the film bases and b) the coating to the intermediate layer.
The properties of the coating resin used should be taken into account when considering the
Resin to be incorporated in the photosensitive layer and vice versa. For example, the resin in the light-sensitive layer should be in the solvent that is used for applying the resin over-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
added to be insoluble. (It must generally also be soluble in the solvent from which the diazonium complex is applied.) The polyvinyl hydrogen phthalate resin used in Example 2 of Austrian Patent Specification No. 245001 is also useful in conjunction with the polyvinyl formal coating resin, especially in fine halftone reproductions, although the structure according to the present example is preferred. Various other resins are useful given the above teachings.
The amount of resin used in the photosensitive layer is generally small in relation to the amount of photosensitive diazonium complex present therein, but the relative amounts can be varied widely. Useful sheet materials have been made in which the ratio of resin to photosensitive diazonium complex varies from 1:10 to about 2: 1.
The amount of pigment used in the resin coating is mainly determined by the desired color intensity that is to be achieved. In general, however, the amount of pigment should not by and large exceed the amount of resin in the coating layer (by volume).
In the lithographic sheetlike materials according to the invention which are to be used as a film for testing the color reproduction, the pigment should be transparent to visible light (so that the true depths of the colors shine through). The pigment does not need to be permeable to ultraviolet light if the flat material is not to be exposed from the front.

H. that the diazonium salt in the light-sensitive intermediate layer can be decomposed into an easily washable product when exposed to ultraviolet light through a transparent image in the areas struck by the light, and that the light-sensitive intermediate layer also causes this intermediate layer to bond both to the underlying film and to the resinous coating Resin, e.g.
