<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

are derived, wherein n is an integer from 0 to 2, m 1 or 2, Rl is hydrogen or an alkyl or
Alkylol group with 1 to 10 carbon atoms and R2 denotes an alkylene radical with 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
The preferred method for preparing the new copolymers is the copolymerization of trioxane with a compound of the formula given above in the presence of boron fluoride or a boron fluoride complex.
For some uses, polymers are required that have rigidity as well as machinability at high pressures, a combination of properties that have a low one
Melt index and a high melt index ratio 10x / lx.
The melt index used in this description is determined by heating a polymer sample in a cylinder with a diameter of 50.8 mm to a temperature of 1900 ° C. and by pressing it through an opening with a 0.22 mm diameter and 0.8 mm length below one of one
Piston with 0.947 mm diameter applied load of 2160 kg and is the weight of the polymer passing through the opening in 10 minutes. The test is detailed in ASTM D-1238-
57T. Ten times the melt index is generally used when the melt index values are low and is determined in an identical manner except that the load is increased ten times to 21.6 kg.
In the past, the production of rigid polymers with a low melt index required the use of starting material of extremely high purity, since impurities in polymerizations cause the chain to terminate prematurely and lead to polymers with a low molecular weight and high melt index. In addition, the earlier polymers with a relatively low melt index are difficult to process because they usually only have an extraordinarily narrow temperature range for their processability. With the aid of the invention it has become possible to obtain rigid copolymers with a low melt index and a high 10x / 1x melt index ratio, which copolymers can be processed in an appropriately broad temperature range, without using starting material with extremely high purity.
In this way copolymers can be obtained with such low melt indices that they are difficult to measure accurately, e.g. B. 2 to 5, 10-fold melt indexes over 100 and 10x / lx melt index ratios between 35 and 90.
It seems likely that the properties of the novel copolymer are due to limited crosslinking between polymer molecules at the positions of the hydroxyl groups of the mentioned alkylol substituents. In any case, for the production of these easily processed polymers it is necessary to limit the proportion of groups containing an alkylol substituent to no more than
EMI2.1
to restrict meren. If the content rises above 70%, the polymer becomes increasingly difficult to treat and is no longer as a thermoplastic molding material but as a thermosetting material, i.e. H. useful for forming shaped articles during actual polymer production.
The copolymers according to the invention preferably contain, in addition to the oxylmethylene groups and the groups derived from the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compounds, other oxyalkylene units with adjacent carbon atoms which, like those mentioned above and especially like the oxyethylene units, form bonds in the polymer chains.

The copolymers are, as already indicated, preferably by copolymerizing trioxane and the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compound in the presence of boron fluoride or one
Boron fluoride complex produced. The proportions of the comonomer, which is used to prepare the copolymers which are easy to process, are generally equal to the amount of the groups with
Using the comonomer to be introduced into the polymer.
If the copolymer is produced only from trioxane and the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compound, this proportion should preferably be such that a polymer with 93 to 99.5% by weight oxymethylene groups results, while at
Terpolymers are preferably used, which have a polymer with at least
78% by weight of oxymethylene groups result. The most preferred terpolymers contain 96, 1 to
97.9 wt. % Oxymethylene groups, 2 to 2.9% by weight oxyethylene groups, and 0.05 to 0.80% by weight groups derived from the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compound.
While the boron fluoride coordination complexes with compounds in which oxygen or sulfur is the donor atom, e.g. B. complexes with ethers, esters, phenols and dialkyl sulfides, are generally satisfactory, the complex with dibutyl ether is preferred as the catalyst. However, any other means of catalyzing the trioxane polymerization can be used to aid the copolymerization.
Examples of substances proposed as catalysts for the trioxane polymerization are: antimony trifluoride, antimony boron fluoride, bismuth trifluoride, bismuth oxyfluoride, nickel fluoride, aluminum trifluoride, titanium tetrafluoride, manganese fluoride, manganese fluoride, mercury fluoride,
Silver fluoride, zinc fluoride, ammonium bifluoride, phosphorus pentafluoride, hydrogen fluoride, thionyl chloride, fluorosulfonic acid, methanesulfonic acid, phosphorus trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, ferric chloride, zirconium tetra chloride, aluminum trichloride, stannous chloride and stannous chloride.
If a catalyst containing boron fluoride is used, it is usually present in the polymerization zone in such an amount that its boron fluoride content is between 0.0002 and 1% by weight based on the weight of the monomer in the polymerization zone. Preferably, amounts between 0.003 and 0.03 wt.% Are used in a continuous process and between 0.002 and 10 in a layered process.
The monomers in the reaction zone are preferably essentially anhydrous. Small amounts of moisture, as found in commercially available reagents or which can be introduced through contact with atmospheric air, do not prevent polymerization; however, should be removed for maximum yields.
The temperature in the reaction zone can e.g. B. 0 to 1000C and the reaction time 5 minutes to 72 hours. Any desired pressure from sub-atmospheric pressure to 100 atm or more can be used.
To control the molecular weight of the polymer, a small amount, e.g. B. 100 to 3000 parts by weight / million parts by weight of trioxane, a chain transfer agent, e.g. B. methylal, are added to the reaction mixture.
The polymerization can be carried out in a solvent medium, e.g. B. in cyclohexane, and the monomer mixture can conveniently be exposed to constant shear during the polymerization. If boron fluoride or a complex thereof is used as the catalyst, neutralization of the catalyst when the polymerization is complete is desirable because prolonged contact with the catalyst will degrade the polymer. The polymerization product can be treated with an aliphatic amine, e.g. B. be treated with tri-n-butylamine in a stoichiometric excess over the amount of free catalyst in the reaction product and preferably in an organic washing liquid which is a solvent for the unconsumed trioxane.
Otherwise, the reaction product can be washed with water, which neutralizes the catalyst activity.
The novel copolymers, like other oxymethylene copolymers, can also be interspersed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Carbon-carbon bonds are stabilized by removing the terminal oxymethylene groups until a stable end group with a carbon-carbon bond is achieved by thermal or hydrolytic degradation.
The thermal decomposition rate of the copolymers can also be increased by adding common chemical stabilizers, e.g. B, a combination of an antioxidant, e.g. B. a substituted bisphenol and an inhibitor of chain cleavage, z. B. a compound with trivalent nitrogen are reduced.
The table below shows the conditions used and the results obtained for three examples given to illustrate the invention. In the examples, trioxane, ethylene oxide and trimethylolpropanoxethane were placed in the amounts given in the table in a stainless steel vessel equipped with a sigma-shaped paddle stirrer.
Cyclohexane and a boron trifluoride dibutyl etherate catalyst (34.4 wt. 0/0 FBs) were added in the amounts indicated. The reactions were started at 650 ° C. and the temperatures were changed in the manner shown during the reaction, the values given being the highest and final temperatures.
In Example 2, a second amount of the catalyst, dissolved in cyclohexane, was added, as a result of which the trioxane / cyclohexane ratio is reduced from 20 to 16.
The catalyst concentration is expressed in parts by weight boron fluoride / million parts by weight trioxane.
Before its properties were determined, the washed and dried polymer was ground for one hour with cyanoguanidine (0.1%) and 2.2'-methylene-bis-4- (methyl-6-tert.-butylphenol) (0.5 %) at 2100C under nitrogen protection in a plastograph. Kp is the rate of degradation, i.e. H. is the weight percent / minute loss when heated in a forced air oven at 2300C.

The copolymers are easy to process, such as. B. those prepared according to the examples, thermoplastic and soluble in the common solvents for oxymethylene polymers.
For example, the finely divided polymers dissolve in p-chlorophenol up to an amount of at least 0.1% by weight at 60 ° C. and are completely soluble in a solvent composed of 60% methanol and 40% water when they are mixed with heated to 1600C in the solvent. The copolymers have melting points of at least 1500C and are normally grindable at a temperature of 2000C. They have an average molecular weight of at least 10,000 and, in addition to that by the
Numbers in the examples show high heat resistance, high alkali resistance.
Are the chemically stabilized copolymers z. B. in a 50% gene aqueous sodium hydroxide solution
Heated under reflux for 45 min at about 1450C, their weight decreases by less than 1%.
These copolymers also have high melt elasticities and are therefore particularly suitable for blow molding and vacuum forming. A high melt elasticity in a polymer causes it to thicken and shorten when extruded from a narrow opening under heat and pressure.
In blow molding, this tendency to thicken and shorten in a hanging parison partially counteracts the action of gravity on the parison and allows a larger parison to be produced
To hold pellets without increasing the internal stresses caused by the increased weight.
It is convenient to express the melt elasticity as the percentage increase in the extrudate diameter compared to the opening diameter when the polymer is extruded under the conditions which are prescribed by ASTM D-1238-57T for determining the melt index. Copolymers are usually obtained according to the invention with melt elasticities in excess of 20% and even in excess of 30%.
In the case of an oxymethylene homopolymer with a comparable melt index or a comparable one
Copolymers without groups derived from alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compounds is the
Melt elasticity usually below 10%.
The copolymers have a high melt strength and are accordingly suitable for processing by methods such as the blow molding of relatively large bottles and for the extrusion of complex and large profiles, especially when precise control of the dimensions is important.
This allows excellent control of the surface pulsation and wall thickness when extruding pipes.
In a typical blow molding process, 113g Boston-style round bottles can be made as follows. The following are used: a 50.8 mm extruder with a length / diameter ratio of 14/1, an internal diameter of the extrusion molding bushing of 14.3 mm, an external diameter of the dome of 5.1 mm, a nozzle of 12.7 mm, a nozzle temperature of 171 C, a melting temperature of 193 C, a mold temperature of 110 C and a cycle of 20 to 22 seconds.
In a typical extrusion process, a tube with an inner diameter of 25.4 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm can be extruded in a standard 63.5 mm extrusion machine of the Davis type with an inner diameter of the extrusion molding bushing of 30.5 mm and an outer diameter of the mandrel of 25.5 mm a 228, 6 mm long outer sleeve with an inner diameter of 26 mm is arranged close to the extrusion die bushing and concentrically with it. The sleeve controls the outside diameter of the pipe, while the inside diameter is controlled by the pulling speed. The nozzle can be kept at 2040C and the sleeve at 800C. The air pressure in the extruded tube can be kept at an overpressure of 1.61 kg / cm2 and the tube can be ejected at a speed of 2 m / min.
By copolymerizing trioxane with more than 7% of its weight with the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compound, unreactive, probably crosslinked copolymers can be obtained, the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compound being used in amounts of up to 20% by weight based on the total monomer weight. In this as well as in the easy-to-process copolymers, a compound with at least two adjacent carbon atoms, such as. B. ethylene oxide or dioxolane introduced.
In accordance with this feature of the invention, the copolymers preferably consist of 70 to

98.5% by weight of oxymethylene groups, 0.5 to 10% by weight of the groups having adjacent carbon atoms and 7 to 20% by weight of the groups being derived from the alkylol-substituted oxacyclic compound.
The copolymers, which are difficult to process, can be brought into the desired shape before the end of the polymerization process. The polymerization mixture can, for. B. heated and sheared for a sufficient limited period of time to ensure complete mixing and then transferred to a mold to form and terminate the polymerization reaction.
