used air after completion of the measurement through opening to the outside. The
Blower fresh air sucked in at a valve, passed through the entire pipe system and blown out again through the opened second valve with the intermediate valve open, without the
To change the altitude of the spirometer. In this position of the valves, a new patient can also get used to breathing with the device connection with the mouthpiece without the measurement having already been initiated. By closing the intermediate valve, the spirometer bell can then be raised to its highest position and the device can be prepared for the next measurement attempt with the maximum volume of regenerated air.
Since electrical control of the valves is required in such high-quality devices, the respective function of the device described above can be achieved by simply pressing a switch to control the two-way valves and the intermediate valve when using solenoid valves.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the subject of the invention is shown in the scheme:
The breathing tube system consists of a ring-shaped line to which the subject's lungs-L-is connected through a mouthpiece --10--. The following equipment is installed in the pipe system: Two two-way valves - 1 and 2 - for switching on and off or
Ventilation of the pipe system, the carbon dioxide absorber filled with soda lime-3--, a fan-4-determining the direction of circulation of the pipe system for the flow circulation, the motor of which has an independent cooling air line, so that the fan motor does not cause any heating of the breathing air flowing through the fan, a trickle tower - 5--, which by means of a pump --11-- introduces water of a certain temperature in countercurrent to the breathing air and reduces its temperature and moisture content; a tank --6-- high thermal conductivity (e.g.
B. made of steel) for the air filling with a volume for at least 10 min of breathing air; a spirometer --7-- with a self-writing device -8- and a shut-off valve --9-- for feeding the spirometer.
The effect of the device is as follows: Before the test person connects the mouthpiece --10-- to the pipe system, the two two-way valves --1 and 2-- are opened and the blower motor --4-- is switched on so that room air is released Valve --2-- is sucked in in the sense of the arrow directions drawn through the pipe system and, with the valve - 9 - open, exits through the valve - l -. The circulating water pump - 11 - circulates water of a certain temperature (room temperature) in countercurrent through the trickle tower-S. As a result, the feed tank-6-, like the bell chamber-7-of the spirometer, is filled with fresh air.
With the size of the volume of the feed tank - from around 40 to 80 l - the connection of the pipe system to the oxygen pressure tank that has been customary up to now is superfluous.
After the device is used for measuring the basal metabolic rate of a test person

the test subject waited for the new breathing conditions.
Then the two valves-1 and 2-and thus the pipe system of the device are closed, so that now the exhaled air via the two valves-1 and 2-in the

is brought to a constant temperature determined by the water temperature of the trickle water. From the trickle tower, the exhaled mixture reaches the air-filled tank-6-, from this into the spirometer-7-, the weight-relieved bell of which now sinks downwards by the oxygen content consumed in the lungs-L-, which movement is caused by the pen on the self-writing device --8 - is being held.
From the spirometer --7 - the mixture reaches the mouthpiece-10-via the opened valve-9 - in order to be brought back into the described direction of circulation by the next breath of the test person.
After completion of the measuring process, which takes about 6 to 10 minutes, the test person removes the mouthpiece --10--, opens the two two-way valves - 1 and 2--, and circulates the fan --4-- again the valve --2-- is sucked in and the feed container --6-- and the spirometer - 7 - are flushed with fresh air. To raise the spirometer to its initial volume, the valve --9 - is then closed, which creates a pressure increase in the spirometer bell - 7 - and this is raised again to its initial position for the corresponding volume, whereupon the device for a
