Process for the preparation of new hexahydropyrimidone derivatives It has been found that new hexahydropyrimidone derivatives of the general formula:
EMI1.1
can produce, in which R1, R2 and Rs hydrogen atoms, alkyl radicals with up to 8, preferably with up to 4, carbon atoms, which can contain a hydroxyl or alkoxyl group with 1-4 carbon atoms separated from the oxygen atom by at least two carbon atoms, or allyl radicals, R3, R4 and R6 denote hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals with 1-5, preferably 1-4, carbon atoms when substances of the general formula:

in which R3-R6 have the abovementioned meaning, can react in an aqueous medium at a pH above 9 and a temperature between 0 and 100 ° C. with twice the molar amount of formaldehyde and the products obtained, optionally with saturated aliphatic mono- or dialcohols with up to to 8 carbon atoms or the monoalkyl ethers of the dialcohols mentioned with 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical, or with allyl alcohol in the presence of acidic catalysts and optionally in the presence of solvents and / or diluents.
Examples of starting materials of the formula II include: 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-hexahydropyrimi-

Set enough alkaline substances or buffer mixtures. For economic reasons, the alkali metal hydroxides, especially sodium and potassium hydroxide, are preferred.
The reaction of the substances of the formula II is preferably carried out at a temperature between 20 and 80 ° C .; Reaction temperatures between 40 and 70 ° C. have proven particularly useful. The formaldehyde can be obtained in free form, for example as a commercially available aqueous formaldehyde solution, or in
Form of its easily cleavable polymers such as paraformaldehyde.
If desired, the N-methylol groups formed by the reaction with formaldehyde and, where appropriate, a hydroxyl group in the 4-position can be etherified with alcohols of the type described above. Examples of such alcohols include: methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, sec-butanol, branched amyl alcohols, octanols, ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 2, 3- Butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, methyl glycol, (= ethylene glycol monomethyl ether), butyl glycol (= ethylene glycol monobutyl ether), 1,4-butanediol monomethyl ether and allyl alcohol.
The etherification is carried out in the presence of acidic catalysts, preferably in the presence of moderately strong or strong acids, such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or oxalic acid. It is particularly advisable to work in the presence of as little water as possible. The alcohol provided for the etherification can be used in excess and thus at the same time used as a solvent for the reactants, but other solvents and / or diluents that do not interfere with the etherification reaction can also be used.
The etherification reaction is preferably carried out at a moderately elevated temperature between 40 and 600.degree.
It is particularly advantageous to carry out the preparation of the substances of the formula II and their reaction with formaldehyde in the same solution without isolating the substances of the formula II. In a preferred embodiment, urea is used with an aldehyde of the general formula Rij-CHO (lU) and an aldehyde of the general formula
EMI2.4
in a molar ratio of 1: 1:
1 in an aqueous medium or in an alcohol Rg-OH (V), where R3-R6 have the meaning given above, at elevated temperature in the presence of acids, brings the reaction mixture, if necessary, without isolating the substances of the formula II Removal of the excess alcohol to a pH value above 9 and then, as indicated above, allows it to react with twice the molar amount of formaldehyde and optionally with the alcohols defined above in the presence of acidic catalysts.
The substances obtainable by the present process are valuable paint components, resin tanning agents and intermediates for white tanning agents.
The parts mentioned in the examples are parts by weight.
Example 1: 158 parts of 4-methoxy-5, 5-dimethylhexahydropyrimidone-2 are mixed with 200 parts of a 30% strength aqueous formaldehyde solution while stirring, mixed with 15 parts of 2 normal sodium hydroxide solution and stirred at 600 ° C. for 2 h. The pH of the reaction solution is between 10 and 11. The reaction mixture is then cooled to room temperature and neutralized with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Careful evaporation of the aqueous solution under reduced pressure gives a syrupy residue which crystallizes after a few days. The methylol compound can be recrystallized from acetone.
