Device for carrying out exothermic catalytic gas reactions
The subject of the parent patent No. 254224 is a process for carrying out exothermic catalytic gas reactions, in particular the ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and hydrogen, with temperature control preferably inside the reactor by means of step-wise, indirect cooling of the hot reaction gas after its exit from individual of two or more catalyst layers by fresh synthesis gas mixture, in which the preheated fresh synthesis gas stream flows through one or two cooling tube bundles, which are then arranged diametrically on opposite sides of the interior of the reactor, up to above the inlet catalyst layer,
after which it passes as a hot reaction gas through a catalyst column divided by horizontal baffle plates with alternately recessed gas passages and in this way alternately flows around the deflection points of the shortened baffle plates corresponding to the deflection points of the abovementioned cooling tube bundles, optionally arranged on both sides of the catalyst column, and in countercurrent to the fresh gas finally goes through the tubes of the main heat exchanger to discharge the reaction gas.
According to the parent patent (claims 4 and 9), a device used to carry out this method has a special feature. This is characterized by a mixing chamber interrupting the fresh gas cooling tube bundle (s) arranged peripherally and having a separate cold gas supply.
In contrast, the subject of the additional patent is an improvement or modification of the aforementioned device, with the help of which an even more subtle regulation of the operating temperature is possible. This is to be explained in more detail below with reference to the schematic and exemplary representation of the drawing. The corresponding reference numbers of the parent patent are used for the same parts.
It has been shown that the supply of cold gas into a mixing chamber which interrupts the bundle of cooling tubes --17-- is sometimes superfluous if this makes the latter more heat-absorbing at certain points, especially at the hottest deflection points for the reaction gas around the cooling tubes by multiplying their number, as far as the available space permits, and / or by reducing their cross-section and / or with thinner walls

or and cold gas supply can be carried out. A simple embodiment is shown in the drawing, which schematically indicates some of the possibilities in this sense.
