Process for the production of transparent moldings and foils that are stable to light and heat
It is known that polymers and copolymers of halogenated polyvinyl compounds undergo decomposition under the influence of light and heat. This is also associated with discoloration. For this reason, these products must be stabilized before they can be processed. A large number of chemically uniform compounds and mixtures of such compounds are known as stabilizers, including metal salts of carboxylic acids.
Among these substances, lead compounds have particularly good stabilizer properties. Most of the lead compounds known to date and used as stabilizers for polymers and copolymers of halogenated polyvinyl compounds have the disadvantage, however, that they cannot be used to produce transparent plastic products. In general, these give opaque to covering products, it being possible for the lead compounds added as stabilizers to be used as pigments at the same time.
It has now surprisingly been found that transparent moldings or films which are stable to light and heat can be produced from halogenated vinyl polymers if dissolved or dispersed lead salts of a branched carboxylic acid with a carbon number of 8 to 12 are added to the polymers.
The compounds mentioned behave particularly favorably when they contain tertiary groups.
Cyclic carboxylic acids of the type mentioned can also be used, it being possible for these products to be used either alone or as a mixture with one another. Hydrocarbons or other organic solvents can be used as solvents or dispersants, provided that the carboxylic acids mentioned are soluble or dispersible in them and the solvents do not interfere with the preparation of the molded bodies and films. So z. B. a mixture of paraffins, naphthenes and aromatics can be used.
Examples of the compounds which serve as stabilizers according to the invention are the lead salts of the following carboxylic acids: ethylhexanoic acid, propylbutyl acetic acids, trimethylbutanoic acids, tertiary butylbenzoic acids, methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids and naphthenic acids.
When using products according to this invention, transparent films or moldings are obtained. This phenomenon could not be foreseen, since the use of organic lead salts other than stabilizers usually only results in opaque or covering films or moldings.
In general, additions of 0.1 to 10% of the abovementioned compounds, based on the total mass of the polymer, are expedient. The amount of solvent used to dissolve or disperse the stabilizers mentioned can vary within certain limits. The preferred quantitative ratio of stabilizer to solvent is 1: 3, but this ratio does not limit the scope of these additives.
The products of the present invention can be used to produce moldings, films and coatings of polymers and copolymers of halogenated vinyl compounds with excellent transparency and clarity while maintaining their very good heat resistance. The products mentioned can be improved by adding lubricants, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl phosphites or mixtures thereof, by using light stabilizers or antioxidants. Polymers which have been stabilized according to the present invention can be processed by all known customary methods.
The lead compounds mentioned are produced in a known manner.
Some examples of the composition of the products manufactured by the process according to the invention are given below:

Example 7: 100 parts of a halogenated polyvinyl chloride copolymer, 3 parts of 80% lead 2-ethylhexoate.
