and their salts, especially with alkali metals. R, R and R therein stand for hydrogen or lower alkyl radicals, especially with 1-5 carbon atoms, and R3 for lower aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals, especially alkyl radicals with 1-5 carbon atoms, or halogen atoms. Particularly mentioned as aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals are alkyl radicals, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl or pentyl radicals, or alkenyl radicals, such as vinyl or l-propenyl radicals, or alkynyl radicals, e.g. B. the ethyl radical. Substituents of these radicals are, for. B. free, esterified or etherified hydroxyl or mercapto groups, e.g.
B. the acetoxy, methoxy, phenoxy or methyl mercapto group, amino groups such as the dimethylamino group or halogen atoms.
The new 3, 4-dihydro-1, 2, 4-benzothiadiazin-1, l-dioxides and their salts show a diuretic and natriuretic activity and are said to be used as medicinal products.
First and foremost are the compounds of the formula:

introductory means. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent such as an organic solvent, e.g. B. ether, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, p-dioxane or tetrahydrofuran, an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. B.
Benzene or toluene, or a halogenated lower aliphatic hydrocarbon, e.g. B. tetrachloroethane. Formaldehyde-releasing agents are polymers or reactive functional derivatives of formaldehyde, such as paraformaldehyde, trioxane, or acetals, e.g. B. dimethoxymethane or diethoxymethane, or hexamethylene tetramine or chloromethyl methyl ether. Instead of hydrochloric acid or another hydrohalic acid, hydrogen chloride gas or a corresponding other hydrogen halide gas is preferably used and, if necessary, in an excess to ensure the formation of the N-chloro (or halo) methyl aniline derivative formed as an intermediate . The reaction can be carried out at room temperature, reduced or elevated temperature, e.g.
B. at the boiling point of the solvent, and preferably in the absence of water.

The compound of the formula R-NH is used in gaseous form or in solution, e.g. B. in one of the above solvents, added to the reaction mixture. You can also remove the solvent that is used in the first phase first and replace it with another. Preferably, however, the same solvent is used in both phases. You can work with cooling as well as at room or elevated temperature. An excess of the hydrochloric acid or other hydrohalic acid will advantageously also be removed before the compound of the formula NH-R is added, in order to prevent major losses through neutralization of the starting material.
The hydrochloric acid or other hydrohalic acid can be removed either by increasing the temperature and / or by reducing the pressure in the reaction vessel.
The starting materials are known or can be produced by methods known per se. The l-aminobenzene-2, 4-disulfohalides can be obtained by reacting an aniline of the formula:

or hydriodic acid or sulfuric acid. For example, a dialkyl sulfate, e.g. B. dimethyl or diethyl sulfate act on an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, such as lithium, sodium or potassium hydroxide solution of the starting material. It is preferable to work in solvents, such as water, or in water-miscible organic solvents, such as lower alkanols, e.g. B.
Methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol or tert. Butanol, ethers, such as diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, or formamides, such as dimethylformamide.
Depending on the reaction conditions, the new compounds are obtained in free form or in the form of their salts. Metal salts obtained can e.g. B. by reaction with aqueous acidic agents such as mineral acid, e.g. B. hydrohalic acid, for example hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, can be converted into the free compounds. These in turn can be converted into dimetal salts, such as alkali metal salts, by treating e.g. B. with a metal hydroxide such as sodium or potassium hydroxide in a solvent such as an alkanol, e.g. B. methanol or ethanol, or in water and subsequent evaporation of the solvent or by reacting the free compound in an ether, such as paradioxane or diethylene glycol dimethyl ether solution, with an alkali metal hydride or amide, e.g. B. sodium or potassium hydride, or amide.
Mono- or poly-salts can be obtained here.
The invention relates in particular to those embodiments of the process according to which one starts from such starting materials and proceeds in such a way that the compounds described at the beginning as being particularly valuable are obtained.
The invention is described in more detail in the following examples. The temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example 1: A well-stirred suspension of 0.46 g of paraformaldehyde in a solution of 5.0 g of 5-chloroaniline-2,4-disulfonyl chloride in 25 cm of diethylene glycol dimethyl ether is bubbled through with hydrogen chloride gas at room temperature for 1 hour. The resulting solution is then heated to 500 for 10 min and the excess of gaseous hydrogen chloride is removed under reduced pressure, where-

precipitated ammonium chloride is filtered off and the 6-chloro-7-sulfamyl-3, 4-dihydro-1, 2,4-benzothiadiazine- - 1, 1-dioxide is precipitated by concentrating the filtrate under reduced pressure and adding 35 cm of water. The crude product is recrystallized from aqueous methanol, mp 267-2720C.
If 5-methyl-aniline-2, 4-disulfonyl chloride is allowed to react with paraformaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid and then with ammonia, as described above, the 6-methyl-7-sulf-amyl-3, 4-dihydro- 1, 2, 4-benzothiadiazine-1, 1-dioxide.

Bubble dry air through the solution at room temperature for 25 minutes while reducing the pressure at the same time.
The solution is cooled in an ice bath, and at 10-300 gaseous ammonia is passed into the solution for 55 minutes. The basic reaction mixture is left to stand for 1 hour, the precipitate which has separated out, which consists mainly of ammonium chloride, is filtered off and washed with 30 cm of diethylene glycol dimemyl ether. About 60 cm3 of the solvent are then evaporated from the combined filtrates, the residue is diluted with 70 cm of water, whereupon the precipitate is filtered off. After recrystallization from a mixture of water and methanol, 6-chloro-7-sulfamyl-3, 4-dihydro- -1, 2, 4-benzothiadiazine-1, 1-dioxide, which is obtained with the one according to Example 1 product obtained is identical.
