<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Sorting device for logs
So far, log sorting has been carried out with the help of chain conveyors and / or wagonets.
When sorting the round timber with the well-known chain conveyors, the wood had to be aligned and rolled on the sorting piles by a dedicated service team, regardless of whether these conveyors were dropped manually or automatically. At least five men are required to operate such a log yard and the time required for straightening work is the same as that for sorting work. In order to simplify this straightening work, block ponds were created in which the wood that is to be fed to the gate with the strong end first was swiveled around 1800. In the case of such log ponds, it was also necessary to provide another operator who placed the logs on the chain conveyor to the gate. The creation of such log ponds is not possible everywhere and, moreover, is expensive.
The log ponds usually fail in winter. A high percentage of work accidents in sawmills occur in the storage areas. In addition, this type of sorting damages the logs. The same applies to sorting with the help of wagonets.
The invention has set itself the task of eliminating the deficiencies and disadvantages indicated and achieves this by means of a rail-bound vehicle that can be moved along the stacking areas (pile) with a free loading area and a rotating luffing crane known per se, preferably at one of its ends. this crane carries a tong pivotable about a vertical axis for gripping and depositing the wood.
These measures also ensure that the vehicle with a load of a large number of logs only has to pass the sorting pile once on its outward and return journey, and that at most only two men are required to be operated on the storage area.
Further features, details and advantages of the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawing.
1 shows a side view of the device, FIG. 2 shows a plan view and FIG. 3 shows a section along the line III-III in FIG. 2, the latter figures showing the mode of operation of the device in the area of the sorting pile.
A vehicle 2 with a free loading area 3 can be moved on rails 1, which expediently adjoin the towing track in standard gauge. At one end of the loading area 3, a known, rotatable luffing crane 4 is arranged. This crane 4 carries block tongs 6 which can be pivoted about a vertical axis 5. All the devices required for its movement and for operating the crane 4 can easily be attached to the vehicle 2. The projection of the luffing crane 4 is dimensioned such that it can sweep the width and depth of the sorting pile 7.
The loading area 3 is longer than the round wood to be sorted and a discharge device for the wood can be built into it.
The device works as follows:
The vehicle 2 drives into the unloading pole, where the round timber that has been brought in by train, truck or horse-drawn carriage is stored. There the loading area 3 is loaded in one layer. This can be done by the crane operator with the help of the luffing crane 4 without assistance, provided that the round timber is in the area of the crane 4. If this is not the case, a second man helps to roll into the area of the crane 4. But also a loading of the loading area 3 with the help of other means
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
could be possible.
The crane operator then moves into the area of the sorting piles 7, which are preferably provided on the left and right at the usual safety distance from the rails 1. There he sets the wood sorted out according to the types, lengths and / or quality. The device according to the invention is also suitable for feeding the sorted out round timber to the conveyor system that brings the timber to the saw carriage. As shown in FIG. 3 with dash-dotted lines, the luffing crane 4 can also remove round wood from the sorting pile 7. This can now be stored in several layers on the loading area 2. In the areas of a feeder pile 8, the charge, for. B. with the help of a tipper, thrown and rolls to a conveyor chain 9, which then brings the logs individually and in the correct position to the clamping carriage.
Since the block tongs 6 can be pivoted about a vertical axis 5, the blocks can always be brought onto the feeder pile 8 correctly, namely with the strong end first. There is therefore no need for any additional straightening work, in particular the creation of log ponds.
