Masses filled with glass
The invention relates to compositions of glass fibers and polyoxymethylene resins which have a new combination of mechanical properties in the solid state, resistance to ambient conditions and processability.
So far, polyoxymethylene resins have been filled with particulate and fibrous materials in order to increase the mechanical properties of the resins in the solid state, such as their modulus of elasticity and their resistance to creep under prolonged loading.
A comparison of particulate and fibrous fillers has shown that particulate fillers do not increase the properties of the resins in the solid state and that long fibers are very desirable. Long fiberglass polyoxymethylene resins have been made; however, these products are inhomogeneous. They cannot be processed into complex shapes by injection molding, as the mold openings and sprues are blocked by the fibers.
The invention aims to provide filled polyoxymethylene resin compositions which have an increased modulus of elasticity and improved creep resistance compared to the unfilled resin and are easily deformable by injection molding.
According to the invention, by using certain diameters and lengths of glass fibers, glass-filled polyoxymethylene resin compositions can be produced which have a surprisingly high melt flow even with glass fillings as thick as 60 gel%.
The preferred amount of glass fiber that can be present in the masses varies between 1
EMI1.1
The glass fibers used according to the invention have a ratio of length to diameter of 10 or more and a maximum length of 0.51 mm. A mathematical analysis of the fiber reinforcement leads to the surprising result that the mechanical properties in the solid state, such as the elastic modulus, do not depend on the fiber length per se, but on the ratio of the fiber length to the fiber diameter:

where E is the secant modulus of elasticity, measured at the tensile stress a, E is the modulus of elasticity of the c R
EMI1.3
Weight fraction of the glass divided by 3, r is the strength of the adhesive bond between glass and resin, D is the fiber diameter and L is the fiber length. The experimental evidence confirms the theoretical relationship.
So one can use the short fiber length, which is essential for good formability, provided that the fiber diameter is reduced accordingly. The fibers are preferably coated

genes to reduce their tendency to destabilize the mass once it has melted.
The term "polyoxymethylene" includes polymers which are produced from formaldehyde or trioxane by various polymerization processes, or polymers of higher aldehydes. These polymers and their production processes are described in German patents No. 962116, No. 1037127, No. 1000152, German Auslegeschriften No. 1037705 and No. 1136488 and USA Patents No. 2, 848, 437; No. 2, 994, 687; No. 3 .. 000, 860 and No. 3, 000, 861.
Polyoxymethylene diesters can be prepared by the methods of U.S. Patents No. 2,998,409 and No. 2,964,500. Polyoxymethylene ethers can also be prepared according to methods already known.
The term polyoxymethylene for the purposes of the present invention also includes copolymers which predominantly contain oxymethylene groups, for example those which can be prepared, for example, by the processes of US Pat. Nos. 2,828,287 and 3,027,352.
Any method of incorporating glass fibers into polyoxymethylene resins can be used so long as that method produces good dispersion of short fibers in the resulting molding powders.
EMI2.1
To see the appropriate stabilizers and short glass fibers by dry mixing or tumbling and then to put the mixed material in a suitable extruder. The mixing process in the extruder is adjusted so that any existing fibers of any length are broken into lengths of less than 0.51 mm. The extrudate is cut into granules or cubes for the purpose of obtaining a molding powder from the glass fiber-polyoxymethylene resin mass.
The following examples illustrate the invention.
Example 1: 2.3kg polyoxymethylene diacetate, stabilized with 1% of a 38% terpolymer
Polycaprolactam, 35% polyhexamethylene adipamide and 27% polyhexamethylene sebacamide and with 0.2% by weight 4,4'-butylidene-bis (6-tert.-butyl-3-methylphenol) as in Example 6 of the USA patent
No. 2, 993, 025 and 0.45 kg through a sieve with 6.35 mm openings passing through glass silk short fibers with a diameter of 0.00762 mm, which are coated with gelatin, are mixed with one another and circulated on rollers for 30 minutes . This mixture is extruded on a 5.1 cm extruder of the Royle type at 2000 ° C. using a screw speed of 46 rev / min and a nozzle with an adjustable valve to maintain a back pressure of 49.2 kg / cm 2.
A gray extrudate is obtained which is quenched in a water bath, air-dried and in
Grains about 8 meshes in size are chopped up. Samples for physical measurements are injection molded in a 28.4 g Watson-Stillman injection molding machine. The tensile modulus at 230 C, 50% humidity is 66720 kg / cm2, the impact strength 0.9 ft, lb / in. The average length of the fiber in the molding powder grains is 0.12 mm.
Example 1 is repeated using the same stabilized polyoxymethylene, the same glass fibers and the same mixing technique, but varying the amount of glass fibers. The
Properties of the various glass-filled compositions are given in Tables I and II.

As the properties explained above reveal, the glass-filled compositions according to the invention are particularly useful for purposes where a high modulus of elasticity and high creep resistance are necessary. Such applications include torsion bars, raceways for ball bearings, roller cages, bearing locks, car bodies, boats, refrigerator housings, clutch bearings, pipes for hot water and connectors for car suspensions.
