<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for reducing or preventing the coarsening of the grain and / or the caking of sodium chloride (industrial salt) as a result of temperature and / or
Fluctuations in humidity during storage
Storage under changing humidity and / or temperature conditions often has unfavorable effects on the nature of water-soluble crystalline substances. In particular, the grain size or grain size distribution changes with an increase in the proportion of coarser grains. A special form of this grain enlargement is caking, in which the grainy structure of the substance in question is completely lost.
Just like caking, its preliminary stages, i.e. H. the gradual changes in grain size and sieve characteristics are undesirable in most cases. This applies in particular when the substances in question are to be brought into solution for further processing, since it is known that the rate of dissolution decreases with increasing grain size. It also applies if the substances are to be mixed with others. You will only achieve the same degree of mixing over and over again in a certain time if the materials used have the same combination properties. Furthermore, cases are known where the usefulness of a substance is tied to a specific grain size.
The use of rock salt as a dust control agent in coal mining should be mentioned here, for example, where the salt should have a particle size distribution of around 50% under 0.5 mm and not more than 2 mm in total. Rapid coarsening of the grain, which is to be feared with this application because the salt has to be moistened at regular intervals, greatly impairs the effectiveness.
Another example relates to the use of salts, in particular sodium chloride, as detonation brakes in safety explosives. Here, too, the effectiveness is tied to a certain, very fine grain size.
Processes have already been given many times to reduce their tendency to cake by adding small amounts of foreign substances to crystalline solids, for sodium chloride, for example, in German Patents No. 1,024939 and No. 954691 and in French. Patent Specification No. 1.01 '. 620 and No. 1,159,534. In the patent mentioned last, reference has also been made to influencing the sieve characteristics. However, all previously known methods are specific for the treatment of a certain substance. So far, however, there have been virtually no rules for the selection of suitable additives. Rather, one was solely dependent on laborious trying out.
On the other hand, it was found that unfavorable changes in the nature of crystalline sodium chloride (industrial salt, which is understood as a salt that is not intended for consumption purposes), which occur as a result of repeated dissolution and crystallization of part of the sodium chloride with changes in the moisture content and crystallization, occur during storage / or the temperature can be prevented or significantly reduced by adding small amounts (a total of 0, 0001-0.1% by weight) of the compounds sodium uranyl acetate, uranyl nitrate and lead nitrate individually or together with the sodium chloride, the following Have properties:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
I They crystallize in a different space group than sodium chloride.
II One of the quantities characteristic of its crystal lattice (e.g. lattice constant) is at least approximately in a ratio m: n to a corresponding quantity in the crystal lattice of sodium chloride, in which m and n are one of the numbers 1, 2,3 mean.
III They are complex compounds or contain ions that interact with the ions or molecules of the
Ability to form sodium chloride complexes.
IV As complex compounds, they are highly polarizable. The indicator for this is that they a) have a molecular volume (formula weight / density) greater than 80 cm3 and / or b) that the values that can be obtained using the formula

the more favorable, the higher the relevant numerical values are.
The agents suitable according to the invention can be admixed with the crystalline sodium chloride by spraying on a solution or suspension of the agent, mixing it thoroughly and then optionally drying it. The agents can also be added in solid form to the moist sodium chloride or, in the simplest case, the chloride and the agent can be mixed dry.
It is possible to mix one or more other components into the sodium chloride in place of a compound exhibiting the four properties specified if these are converted into a compound suitable as an additive for the purposes of the invention. In cases where a certain hydrate stage of a substance represents the additive according to the invention, the anhydrous component or a hydrate stage other than the effective hydrate stage can accordingly also be used.
In the case of the agents to be added according to the invention, the effectiveness can sometimes be increased by the additional use of organic compounds capable of attachment, although they are ineffective on their own, e.g. B. a molar mixture of lead nitrate, hexamethylenediamine and mannitol as an additive for sodium chloride works better than the same amount of lead nitrate alone.
The information in the table below shows that for sodium chloride, sodium uranyl

which have the properties given above. These additives are complex compounds or compounds whose ions are able to form complexes with the sodium chloride. Such complexes are given in column X of the table. Column II shows the space groups in which sodium chloride and the additives crystallize. From column III it can be seen that in each case a lattice constant of the additives with a lattice constant of sodium chloride is approximately in a ratio given by the numbers 1, 2 and 3.
For sodium chloride, the three lattice constants in the crystallographic axis system (a, b, c) and their relevant multiples are listed, of the lattice constants of the additives (GB) only those for which the condition given under II above is approximately fulfilled . The relative deviation

is noted in column IV.
For example, sodium uranyl acetate gives

and in column IX the value

specified, with at least one of these sizes above 80 cm or 30 cm3.
The effect of the additives can be seen from the following sieve analyzes, in each case (in the second column) the analysis of a sample of sodium chloride from the sieve analysis of the same substance after moistening with a certain amount of distilled water and drying in the air in bulk (in the last column). The results of sieve analyzes, which were also carried out after the sodium chloride has been moistened and dried, are recorded in the middle columns. In this case, however, the water used for moistening contained the additives in the amounts specified in each case, calculated on the substance free of water of crystallization and in percent by weight of the sodium chloride treated.
The inventive method is not only for sodium chloride but also for other water-soluble crystalline substances, such as. B. sodium bromide, potassium chloride, potassium bromide, ammonium sulfate and hexamethylenetetramine (urotropin) applicable.
