aldehyde.
Anhydrous solvents are used for the addition of bromine, in particular: carbon disulfide, chloroform, glacial acetic acid and perhalogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (Cl-C). The reaction temperatures can be chosen within the limits from 0 to 50 ° C .; it is preferable to work at temperatures from 0 to +35 C.
The subsequent reaction with alkali acetate, which is preferably carried out with potassium acetate, can be carried out with a lower aliphatic alcohol (Ci-c,) and is expediently carried out at the boiling point of the mixture. Various methods can be used to isolate the reaction product, for example distilling off the solvent or cooling the reaction mixture.
According to the invention, alcoholic solvents are used to convert the aldehydes into their trimethylammonium and pyridinium acetyl hydrazones, aliphatic alcohols having 1-4 carbon atoms being advantageously used as such. It is also carried out in the presence of acids, of which, for example, hydrohalic acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid or organic acids such as acetic acid or formic acid are used. The reaction is expediently carried out in such a way that the cx-bromo-cinnamaldehydes used as starting materials are presented in alcoholic solution and, after the acids have been added, also in alcoholic solution with a suspension of trimethylammonium acetyl hydrazide chloride or bromide or pyridinium acetyl hydrazide chloride or
- bromide are added. The reaction itself is advantageously carried out at a moderately elevated temperature, in particular at the boiling point of the solvent used. In general, the desired process products precipitate from the alcoholic reaction solution in crystallized form.
If such crystallization does not take place immediately due to the high solubility of the process products, precipitation can also be carried out with, for example, diethyl ether.

The products of the process are highly effective fungistatic agents that are significantly more effective than known compounds with a comparable chemical structure. For example, as can be seen from Table II, the ex-bromo-2, 4-dichlorocinnamaldehyde shows a superior activity with regard to its action against skin fungi, thrush and rotting fungi, compared with comparable known compounds. The figures given represent the concentration of the various compounds tested in y / ml which were sufficient to completely prevent the growth of the fungi listed in detail on solid nutrient media over a test duration of about 18 days.
Table II also gives the corresponding data for the a-bromo-2,4-dichloro-cinnamylidene-trimethyl-ammonium acetylhydrazide chloride and the ex-bromo-2,4-dichloro-cinnamylidene-pyridinium acetylhydrazide chloride.
Of particular importance is the significantly better water solubility of the last-named new process products compared to comparable known compounds, which together with their good bacteriostatic and fungistatic effectiveness justify their suitability as additives to disinfectants, soaps, detergents, etc. In Table I, the solubilities of some of the new process products in water at 200 ° C. are compared with the corresponding solubilities of comparable known compounds.
Examples of fungistatically and / or bacteriostatically active preparations are solutions, ointments, soaps or powders, to which the process products are added as active ingredients with the usual carriers and auxiliaries such as water, vegetable or animal fats, waxes, tragacanth, gelatin, magnesium carbonate , Kaolin, talc, zinc oxide,

molecular alcohols into consideration. Anhydrous organic solvents, in particular low molecular weight alcohols, can also be used as solvents. For ointments and powders, the content of the process products presented according to the invention is preferably between 0.5 and 10%.
