<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Pressure regulator with safety valve
The invention relates to pressure regulators with a safety valve, in particular for road and rail vehicles, with a regulating element acted upon by the container pressure, which pneumatically controls a switching piston that is loaded on its opposite side by the compressor line pressure and switches the compressor to idle by switching on an outlet valve which is only effective in the opening direction and which is connected to it and simultaneously acts as a safety valve.
Such pressure regulators have the task of connecting the compressor line to the atmosphere when a certain pressure in the connected container is exceeded and, when the pressure falls below a mostly lolo lower pressure, to separate it again from the atmosphere so that the compressor, which is temporarily discharged into the open air, returns to the Container promotes.
The task of the safety valve is to respond when the cut-off pressure is exceeded by a certain amount. In motor vehicles, however, pressure regulators with a tire inflation device are also often used, in which the actual control element is switched off when the tire inflation hose is connected. The safety valve then limits the tire foot pressure, which significantly exceeds the cut-off pressure, upwards.
For reasons of simplicity and economy, it has recently been proposed to combine the safety valve either with the tire inflation device or with the discharge valve.
A known design belonging to the first-mentioned type has the disadvantage that the seat circumference coefficient, which characterizes the switching accuracy, is relatively unfavorable due to the footprint. In addition, additional devices are required to prevent the container from being filled to tire pressure during the tire inflation process.
The second version uses a hollow switching piston controlled by the regulating element, in which the outlet valve is mounted. A spring also arranged therein presses the outlet valve against the switching piston with a preload that corresponds approximately to the product between the outlet valve positioning surface and the safety valve response pressure. This solution is not satisfactory from the standpoint of ease of assembly.
According to the invention, the above-mentioned disadvantages are avoided by providing a switching spring which loads the switching piston and which supports the compressed air which is fed in by the regulating element and which acts on the switching piston when the outlet valve is pressed open and which considerably weakens the effect of the valve spring when the valve is not under pressure.
The invention is described in more detail below with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2:
The compressed air enters the housing 1 at the compressor connection 2 and acts on both the switching piston 3 and the outlet valve 4. Via the check valve 5, the compressed air flows on to the container connection 6. At the same time, compressed air can pass through the connecting bore 7 under the control piston 8. As long as the cut-off pressure is not reached, the control piston 8 rests tightly on the seat 10 under the actuating force of the control spring 9. The control room 11 is vented via the throttle bore 12. The actuating force of the valve spring 13 is equal to the product of the footprint of the outlet valve 4 with the safety valve response pressure.
The switching spring 14 is dimensioned weaker than the valve spring 13 (by about 5 kp), so that when the valve spring 13 is depressurized, the valve spring 13 rests the outlet valve 4 tightly against the outlet valve seat 15 against the switching spring 14 supported on the switching piston 3. The shift piston
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
3 is tightly guided in the housing by means of the sealing element 16.
If there is an increase in pressure in the compressor line, a pneumatic actuating force is generated, which the outlet valve wants to press open against the actuating force of the valve spring 13. At the same time, however, a further pneumatic actuating force arises, which wants to lift the switching piston 3 and thereby partially relieves the pressure on the outlet valve 4 or the valve spring 13 from the actuating force of the switching spring 14.
If the footprint of the switching piston 3 is designed to be larger than that of the outlet valve 4, the sealing force at the outlet valve seat 15 increases as the pressure in the compressor line increases in accordance with the area difference.
If the cut-off pressure is exceeded, the control piston 8 is lifted from the seat 10 and the switching chamber 11 is acted upon. Since, according to the invention, there is only a small difference in force between the switching spring 14 and the valve spring 13, a relatively low pressure in the switching space 11 is sufficient to move the switching piston 3 with the outlet valve 4 down to the on, despite the inherently strong valve spring - to move stroke 17, whereby the outlet valve seat 15 is released and compressed air can flow out of the compressor line into the open.
As soon as the tank pressure has dropped so far that the control spring 9 pushes the control piston 8 onto the seat
10 can apply tightly, the control room 11 is depressurized because of the throttle bore 12. The valve spring 13 is now able to move the outlet valve 4 together with the switching piston 3 against the force of the switching spring
14 to move up.
If for any reason the control element does not respond, when the cut-off pressure or the setting pressure of the safety valve is exceeded, the outlet valve is pushed open against the actuating force of the valve spring 13 so that compressed air can flow out into the open.
Is the safety valve response pressure, such as B. in the pressure regulator with tire inflation connection, about twice as high as the cut-off pressure of the control element, there are relatively large bias values for the valve or. for the switch spring. In this case, it is possible to guide the outlet valve tightly in the switching piston, as shown in FIG. 2. This does not change the function. Because of the sealing element 18, only the footprint of the outlet valve is smaller by the cross section of the outlet valve stem and thus also the product between the footprint of the outlet valve and the safety valve response pressure. With a given valve cross-section, the choice of the valve spring is therefore possible within relatively wide limits. However, the switching accuracy decreases as the sealing diameter of the sealing element 18 increases.
The version to be selected therefore depends on the respective purpose.
It is entirely within the scope of the invention to use the described design of the switching spring-shut-off piston-outlet valve-valve spring system in pressure regulators with a regulating device other than the one described, in particular e.g. B. in those that cause no permanent connection of the tank line via a nozzle with the atmosphere in the idle position, to bring into use.
