Examples of such olefinically unsaturated compounds are acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, acrylamide, methacrylamide, methacrylonitrile, maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate, ethylene sulfonic acid and its alkali salts, allylsulfonic acid and its alkali salts, and vinylbenzenesulfonic acid and its alkali salts.

The amount of persulfates, preferably ammonium persulfate, can be kept relatively low. It can usually be less than the amount that would be soluble in the polymer batch. Normally, 0.005 parts by weight of ammonium persulphate per part of acrylonitrile will suffice, which has the advantage that the solutions are much less discolored than with higher amounts of persulphate.

Since the polymerization according to the invention leads to conversions of 80% and more in the short time of 1 to 2 hours, in most cases the remaining amount of unreacted monomer can remain in the solution without damage to the spinning process. However, should it be desired to separate off the monomer, this can be done in a simple manner by vacuum distillation.

The exclusion of oxygen necessary for the reaction can be achieved in the usual way by working in closed, completely filled reaction vessels or under a protective gas atmosphere.

The parts given in the examples are parts by weight.

Example 1: 0.025 parts by weight of ammonium persulfate are introduced into a vessel. The vessel is then evacuated, flushed with nitrogen and evacuated again. Now the evacuated vessel is charged with a solution of 14 parts of ethylene carbonate, 5 parts of acrylonitrile and 1 part of water, without
