<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Method and device for the control of test devices which are used to determine the mean deviation of a variable cross-section from its mean value
Devices for determining deviations of a variable value from its mean value are widely used in technology. In the textile industry in particular, capacitive testing of the substance cross-section of ribbons, rovings and yarns has found its way, with the mean deviation of the substance cross-section from its mean value, among other things, being measured. Experience has shown that the corresponding devices must be checked for their display accuracy.
For this purpose, methods and devices are already known in which, instead of the textile material to be tested, a material which is precisely defined with regard to its cross-section and its changes, for example in the form of an endless strip, is moved through the testing device. The changes in cross-section are achieved, for example, by a perforation along the per se homogeneous strip (see Swiss patent specification No. 284828). However, there are limits to this test method in terms of accuracy and reproducibility because the strip has a different degree of flexibility depending on the room temperature, humidity, etc., so that its position within the measuring capacitor of the test device is not always the same.
The arrangement of the guide elements, which guide the strip on both sides of the measuring capacitor in a certain position, is not without influence on the test result, since the electric field between the plates of the measuring capacitor is not exactly homogeneous.
The present invention avoids these disadvantages and relates to a method for checking test devices which are used to determine the mean deviation of a variable cross-section from its mean value, in particular the substance cross-section of products from the textile industry, in which, instead of the test material, one enables elastic longitudinal expansion The string is placed in the measuring element and then subjected to periodically changing expansions, so that precisely defined changes in cross-section are caused in the measuring element by the elastic elongation and contraction of the string.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method and comprises a string with elastic extensibility, which string is clamped on both sides and inserted into the measuring element, as well as drive means which subject at least one clamped end of the string to precisely defined bends and thereby the exact required generate defined cross-sectional changes of the string within the measuring element.
The inspection of the test device is now achieved in that the string is inserted into the measuring element instead of the test material and its transverse contraction or change in thickness is brought about by periodic stretching and contraction. The change in cross section within the measuring element can be calculated from the mechanical change in length of the string. The time course of this change in cross-section gives an average value for this deviation, which can thus be calculated purely mathematically.
The test device, which in turn is used to display this mean value of the cross-sectional changes

If you are working properly, the displayed value also reflects this calculated value. A deviation of this display from the calculated mean value indicates that the test device is supplying an error-prone display output, which is therefore also used during the test.

any variable cross-section is available. For example, such display values can then be corrected with a correction factor which is obtained from the ratio of the actual value and the nominal value of the change in cross section of the string.
The method according to the invention and exemplary embodiments are explained using the description and figures.
EMI2.1
table a crank mechanism with a kinked pull cable; FIG. 6 shows the path-time diagram of a crank guide according to FIG. 5.
In FIG. 1, a measuring element 2, for example an electrical capacitor, is shown schematically, the capacitance of which can be measured in a display device 3. In the field of the capacitor - which serves as a measuring element for testing textile products such as ribbons, roving and yarns and through which these are pulled - a string 1 capable of elastic longitudinal elongation is inserted for the purpose of checking this testing device Side is fixed in a fixed clamping point 8 opposite the measuring element 2 and the other side 4 is periodically stretched by a drive device by the length AI, so that the part of the string 1 located inside the measuring element 2 moves between the cross-sectional values Q1 and Q! contracts and expands again.
An arrangement is also possible in which the string is clamped in a drive device at both ends, the ends being moved in opposite directions such that the point of the string located in the middle of the measuring element 2 remains practically at rest.
As a result, the capacitance C measured in the display device 3 also experiences a change between the values Cl and Cs by AC.
In Fig. 2 this change in capacitance AC = Ci-C: as a function of the change in length AI of the string 1 is shown. The elastic deformation of the string can be read from the straight and reproducible course of the curve part 13. If the string 1 were plastically deformed by the stretching by the amount AI, the initial value Cl would no longer be reached, but a flatter course of the curve 13 would result.
This principle is shown again in FIG. 3, the end 4 of the string 1 being pushed up and down in a straight guide 6. A crank 7 rotates around an axis 15 t t of constant angular
EMI2.2
however, inelastic connection 10 is connected to the end of the crank 7. Two guide rollers 11, 12 serve to hold back the deflection of the connection 10 and the end 4 of the string 1 always moves up and down in the same plane.
The result of the resulting change in capacitance is shown in FIG. 6. The sinusoidal shape is visibly distorted, since the guide rollers 11, 12 are drawn offset fairly close to the crank 7. Another possible embodiment is that the end 4 of the string 1 is hinged directly to the end of the crank 7. In this case, the guide rollers 11, 12 of the string 1 must not offer any significant frictional resistance in order to obtain the same elongation over the entire length of the string.
These devices can also be implemented by a symmetrical arrangement with respect to the measuring element 2, each with a drive means for the movement of both ends of the string 1 mentioned above.
The course of the changes in capacity A C as a function of the crank position et is not critical per se, since the mean deviation of the instantaneous value from its mean value is determined as a test on the devices. Nevertheless, the deviations can be calculated mathematically precisely. When testing textile material, such mean deviations can be up to 300/0, while the lower limit is Ilo and less. In order to be able to simulate such differences in the mean deviations on suitable devices. For example, the stroke of the crank 7 can be made different. whereby the change in length AI and thus the change in capacitance A C can be varied within wide limits.
Another aid for influencing the measuring range is that the length 1 of the unstretched string 1 is brought into a certain ratio to the stroke of the crank 7 and the distance between the determined string end 4 and the end of the crank 7 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
direction rigid, but flexible connection 10 - as in Fig. 5 - is bridged.
Another advantage of this inventive method is that these cross-sectional changes not only result in exactly reproducible and mathematically defined values in a special, capacitive-based device, but can also be transferred to other measuring methods in which the measuring element is the one to be measured Size, for example, magnetic, ohmic, optical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or determined by radiation measurements.
With the aid of the method according to the invention, both purely sinusoidal cross-sectional changes and those with any desired proportion of harmonics can be generated. If the simple crank 7 according to FIG. 3 or FIG. 5 is replaced by a crank mechanism that obeys certain mathematical laws, significantly more complicated forms of the temporal changes in cross-section or capacity can also be simulated.
