<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the preparation of new N, N-tetrasubstituted 3-amino-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene ammonium halides

EMI1.2
EMI1.3
N'-tetrasubstituted 3-amino-2-azaprop-2-ene-cycloaliphatic, optionally substituted phenylalkyl and optionally substituted phenyl radicals, or R1 and R2 and / or R3 and R4 together represent alkylene bridges which may optionally contain heteroatoms, and X represents halogen is obtained when 1 mole of cyanuric halide is reacted with at least about 6 moles of a secondary N-formylamine, optionally in the presence of an inert solvent, at temperatures between 0 and 180.degree.
The implementation according to the invention is completely new and surprising. No literature has yet become known about similar reactions.
The course of the reaction can in principle be represented by the following scheme if cyanuric chloride and dimethylformamide are used as starting materials:
EMI1.4
The N-formyl compounds of secondary amines which contain lower aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, phenylalkyl or phenyl radicals as substituents, and these radicals themselves can in turn be substituted by alkoxy, hydroxyl groups or halogen atoms, are suitable for the reaction according to the invention. The N-formyl compounds of carbo- or heterocyclic secondary amines can also be used.
Particularly suitable are the N-formyl compounds of dimethylamine, diethylamine, diisopropylamine, diethanolamine, ethylcyc1ohexylamine, methylbenzylamine, N-methylaniline, N-methyl-p-chloro-aniline, N-methyl-p-anisidine, and also pyrrolidine, piperidine, and morpholine Thiomorpholine.
Cyanuric chloride and cyanuric bromide are particularly suitable as cyanuric halides.
Halogenated hydrocarbons such as ethylene chloride and tetrachloroethane can be used as solvents.
The reactions are carried out at temperatures between 0 and 180.degree. C., preferably between 40 and 100.degree.
To carry out the reaction, 1 mole of cyanuric halide is mixed with at least 6 moles of N-formylamine. For dilution, the solvent can then be added or the individual reaction components can be combined in solution. In addition to the solvents mentioned above, an excess of secondary N-formylamine can also be used for dilution.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The implementation is usually exothermic. The desired temperature within the specified range is set and maintained either by cooling or, in the case of unreactive starting materials, by heating. The course of the reaction should as far as possible be carried out in such a way that a steady and not too strong carbon dioxide flow is created.
The end of the reaction can be recognized by the decrease in the evolution of carbon dioxide. After 3 moles of carbon dioxide have escaped, the reaction is complete.
The end product is usually already in crystalline form in the reaction mixture. If you work in the presence of diluents, it is advisable to choose fairly high concentrations of reactants so that in these cases too the end product is obtained in solid form.
Working up can be carried out in the customary manner and is preferably carried out in such a way that a precipitant, such as acetone, ether, dioxane and tetrahydrofuran, is added to the reaction mixture and the precipitate is filtered off with suction.
A particular embodiment of the process according to the invention consists in a two-stage procedure.
If the conversion is carried out at lower temperatures, for example in the range from 0 to 10 ° C., an addition compound of 1 mol of cyanuric halide and 2 mol of secondary N-formylamine generally first precipitates.
It is therefore to be assumed that the reaction according to the invention always proceeds via an intermediate stage which, however, is so unstable that at higher temperatures it converts directly with the further secondary N-formylamine still present to give the corresponding N, N'-tetrasubstituted 3-amino- 2-azaprop-2-en-l-ylidenammoniumbalogeniden converts.
This two-stage reaction should correspond to the following equation if cyanuric chloride and dimethylformamide are used as starting materials:
EMI2.1
The addition product which has occurred in the meantime can be isolated without difficulty if one works at sufficiently low temperatures. In principle, only 2 moles of secondary N-formylamine per mole of cyanuric chloride are initially required in this first reaction step. However, in general, an excess does no harm and a further reaction of the end products obtainable according to the invention only occurs at a somewhat elevated temperature.
If the addition product is isolated, in principle 4 moles of secondary N-formylamine are sufficient to carry out the second stage. However, an excess is generally beneficial.
If the two-step route is chosen, 3-amino-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene ammonium halides can also be prepared, which have different substituents on the two amino nitrogen atoms.
In this case, a different secondary N-formylamine is used in the second stage than in the first stage. It should be noted, however, that due to the course of the reaction described in more detail above, one mole of cyanuric halide, in addition to two moles of an asymmetrically substituted 3-amino-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene ammonium halide, also produces 1 mole of a symmetrically substituted one.
The N, N'-tetrasubstituted 3-amino-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene-ammonium halides obtainable according to the invention have not yet been described in the literature. They represent valuable intermediate products for the manufacture of insecticides and auxiliaries for the manufacture and processing of plastics.
The secondary N-formylamides required according to the invention are partly unknown substances. However, they can be prepared from the corresponding secondary amines by the usual methods, such. B. by heating the secondary amines with methyl formate to 120-140 C in a closed reaction vessel for several hours.
Example 1: 3-Dimethylamino-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidenedimethylammonium chloride. 92 parts by weight of cyanuric chloride are poured with 300 parts by weight of dimethylformamide and the resulting solution is left to its own devices at room temperature. After 10 minutes the reaction begins, which can be recognized by the increase in temperature and the development of carbon dioxide. When the temperature has reached 50-60 C, this temperature is maintained by temporary cooling with ice-water until it becomes stormy
EMI2.2
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
During this time, a precipitate is temporarily deposited, which goes back into solution as the reaction proceeds.
At the end of the reaction, the 3-dimethylamino-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidenedimethylammonium chloride has separated out in the form of large crystals. 500 parts by volume of acetone are then added, and the salt is filtered off with suction at room temperature and washed with acetone. If the reaction is carried out in ethylene chloride at 80 ° C. instead of in benzene, 9500 parts by volume of carbon dioxide develop. After cooling, 70 parts by weight of the salt crystallize with a melting point of 103 ° C.

inch chloride are mixed together and the solution is heated to 115.degree. The development of carbon dioxide already starts at 800 C.
When 8000 parts by volume of carbon dioxide have evolved, crystallization begins. It is held at 110 ° C. for a further 4 hours, cooled to room temperature, the crystals are separated from the mother liquor and washed out with acetone. After drying, 60 parts by weight of the salt are obtained; s. 42% of theory.
Example 3: 92 parts by weight of cyanuric chloride are dissolved in 300 parts by weight of dimethylformamide, and the resulting solution is stirred at 5-10 ° C. for 6 hours. The crystallization begins after 30 minutes. The thick crystal slurry is diluted with 300 parts by weight of cold dioxane, filtered off with suction and washed with 200 parts by weight of dioxane and then three times with 200 parts by weight of absolute ether on the filter.
