<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Process for the production of pulp
The invention relates to a process for the production of pulp from coniferous or hardwoods, the wood first being evacuated in a pressure-tight sealed container and then practically completely digested with a solution of sodium sulfite at elevated pressure and elevated temperature.
In the usual processes of this type, wood chips are used as the starting material, which are produced from beatings using our own chopping machines. After removing branches and coarser pieces, the wood chips sorted in this way are brought into the cooker using their own filling devices in order to make better use of the available space. After the digester has been filled with the wood chips and evacuated, the cooking liquor is pumped in and brought to the digestion temperature, which is usually between 130 and 1400C, with direct or indirect steam while maintaining a pressure of about 5 to 6 ata. After boiling is complete, the remaining cooking liquor is discarded, the digested material is washed, then drained into the pit and washed there again with water.
The broken down wood chips are then defibrated by so-called "openers" of old or new designs and sorted by adding water.
It has also been proposed to vary these process conditions within certain limits.
A process has become known from US Pat. No. 2,713,540, according to which hardwood is digested preferably at about 1400C and about 10 atmospheres, but also in a temperature range from 120 to 1700C and at pressures up to a maximum of about 20 atmospheres can be.
Processes in which even higher temperatures are used, e.g. B. at 175 to 190 C, but at the corresponding significantly lower saturation vapor pressures of about 8 to 13 atm. are

Ren works, one of the main disadvantages is a brown discoloration of the broken down fibers that cannot be removed.
It has now been found. that one can achieve considerable advantages according to the invention over these known methods in that the wood in the form of beating or similar pieces of wood with the sodium monosulfite liquor, which advantageously has a concentration of 100 to 180 g / l in a manner known per se , is treated at a pressure of at least 20 atmospheres, in particular 25 atmospheres and higher, and at a digestion temperature of 175 to 190 C, in particular 180-185 C, then diluted with water after the defibration carried out in the usual way after the digestion and this mixture except for one PH:
Value below 7, especially 4, 5-6, 5 is acidified, whereupon the sorting and dewatering is carried out.
The exact compliance with the specified pressure-temperature conditions is essential for the properties of the pulp produced. At the temperatures to be used, it is especially important that the specified relatively high pressure is adhered to, as there is a pressure drop in the interior of the wood, which would result in a brown discoloration of the fibers that cannot be removed if lower external pressures than prescribed according to the invention are used at the high temperatures that are present. According to the present process, however, such permanent and intense discoloration of the fibers does not occur.
Any weak brown coloration of the fibers that may nevertheless occur can, however, surprisingly be eliminated by the aforementioned dilution and acidification of the substance, which brings about a further significant improvement in the whiteness of the end products.

is used to generate pressure in the treatment vessel in which, with the previous, approximately one-hour evacuation, particularly good penetration of the cooking liquor into the air-free cavities of the wood is guaranteed. It also proved advantageous to use a sodium monosulfite liquor which has a pH between 8 and 10, the range between
8, 3 and 9.5 is preferred.
It has also been found that in the process according to the invention the digestion temperature should advantageously be maintained for 1 to 3 hours, depending on the type of wood and its morphological nature, usually 1 to 2 hours being sufficient.
Surprisingly, in the method according to the invention, the lye drained after digestion can be used again for the following cooking processes, only the proportion of lye remaining in the wood of the previous boiling needing to be supplemented by fresh lye.
In the process according to the invention from the specified ranges for pressure, temperature and
Concentration of the monosulfite solution, the values to be selected depend on the type of wood or the chemical composition of the wood and the given morphological conditions.
Poplar wood, for example, usually has a significantly higher pore volume than other types of wood, so that when processing poplar there is a larger surface area available for the disintegration agents and, in this case, lower temperatures and lower concentrations of alkaline solutions can be used.
On the other hand, wood with a higher lignin content will choose a greater concentration of the digestion liquid.
The application of the method according to the invention has a number of further advantages over the known methods:
1. First of all, according to the invention, instead of wood chips, wood can be used in the form of billets. So you save on the one hand the laborious chopping of the wood and on the other hand with the
Loading the containers using the filling machines required for the schnitzel.
2. In addition, in the process according to the invention, about 70% of the digestion liquid used can be reused with its original activity for the next boil, which was not possible with the previous pulp processes.
3. If, according to the invention, a higher yield of cellulose, namely of about at least 60%, can be achieved, the production of harder cellulose (glassine cellulose) being associated with a higher yield.
4. An unbleached spruce sulphite cellulose produced by conventional methods has a whiteness of 48 to 53 GE after a storage time of three months, whereas the substance obtained according to the invention has. under the same conditions a degree of whiteness of 57 GE for spruce.
5. The strength of the material obtained is higher than that of the usual sulphite and equal to that of sulphate cellulose.
6. The bleaching ability of the substance obtained is excellent and, after conventional bleaching, degrees of whiteness can be achieved which correspond to the highest achievable with known celluloses.
The method according to the invention is explained in more detail on the basis of the following example: Example: In a horizontal cooker with a cooker space of 40, about 18 nt of wood, which take up a volume of 24 cubic meters, are in the form of sticks with an average length of 1 m and about 5 to 20 cm in diameter retracted on cart After the container has been tightly closed, the digester space is evacuated to about 730 mm Hg, with the air in the wood being extracted as completely as possible from the pore volume of the wood by evacuating it for one hour. Under
Maintaining the vacuum will initially be about 22 n? a sodium monosulphite liquor with a concentration of 150 g / l and a pH of about 9.0 is pumped into the cooker.
At the same time, the
Cooking liquor is heated indirectly by means of steam, caustic solution is gradually pumped in for another 9 ms with an oscillating piston pump and the cooker contents are brought to a pressure of around 25 atmospheres. After reaching the digestion temperature. from about i800C this is maintained for about 2 hours.
After the digestion has taken place, the unused lye around the whipping wood is drained off and made available for the next boil. The impregnated and digested wood is removed from the digester after washing with the help of the trolleys on which it was brought in. The liquid in the wood, which can no longer be used due to the consumption of the active lye constituents, is then squeezed out and discarded.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The opened wood is defibrated by an "opener" in the same way as in the known pulp extraction described above. The defibration used here differs from that used in the production of semi-pulp in that only very low mechanical forces are required for defibration.
After defibration, water is added to the substance and the suspension obtained is treated with an inorganic acid, e.g. B. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, or an organic acid such as acetic acid, adjusted to a pH below 7. The fabric is then sorted and drained.
After this production process, various woods, such as B. spruce, poplar and birch processed.
The liquid uptake during the impregnation was very high in all cases, and was e.g. B. with spruce about 200 wt .-% and with birch 195 wt .-%.
When processing spruce, the degree of whiteness was about 57 GE after three months of storage.
As with the known production of cellulose, the grinding degree of the starting products is between 10-14 SR.
After grinding the material with the usual mill, the strength values were determined.

The width achieved in the examples given for the double folds, which represent a measure of elasticity, are equal to or exceed the values of conventional cellulose, but the yield achieved is significantly higher than with cellulose which is produced according to the known processes .
In addition, the grinding characteristics show that the pulp obtained according to the invention, contrary to the usual semi-pulps, shows those swelling properties which, as is known, only allow defibrillation of the fiber, which also explains the higher strength values.
The pulp character is also expressed in the fractionation of the material obtained. As with normal cellulose, the proportion of long fibers is just as high, i.e. H. over 90% z. B. with spruce. from which the full chemical decomposition can be seen without destruction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Despite the high temperatures, which cause a dark color in semi-pulp, this cellulose shows, as indicated above. Brightness values from 57 GE upwards.
In order to avoid the accumulation of the lignin (dark color) of the waste liquor on the fiber of the cellulose, which occurs through prolonged storage and would no longer be washable, it is necessary that the production process, i.e. cooking, washing, defibrillation, acidification, is not interrupted .
