<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Device for automatic writing and reading of information
For the automatic forwarding of balances or similar values, devices on booking machines are known in which a magnetizable card is guided past a stationary magnetic head when it is inserted and the value to be stored is applied to it, which can be accessed again when required. Other known devices use the horizontal, step-by-step movement of the paper trolley as a feed for magnetic labeling or reading of the information carrier. In both cases, several magnetic heads are attached to the stationary part of the machine; both facilities require quite a lot of effort. With them it is also customary to apply the magnetic layer over the height of the card in a corresponding width.
This creates valuable space for them
Lettering, e.g. B. for columns, possibly even a whole map page, is lost. In addition, neither one nor the other device allows expedient and reliable control methods to be used, because the relative movement between the card and the magnetic head affects the rest of the work process, e.g. B. Card collection and card ejection or type-based labeling of the card is bound. It would be z. B. an automatic control reading immediately after the magnetic labeling is unthinkable, because it would be associated with an additional extension and retraction of the card or a back and forth movement of the paper scales. But both would take a lot of time.
In addition, it is sometimes necessary with the known devices to completely retract the card before it is inserted into the correct line so that it can be read in its entire length, which in turn means a considerable loss of time.
A device is also known for automatically carrying forward balances to booking machines, the account cards of which have a magnetic lining for storing multi-digit numbers and which is provided with several magnetic heads for sensing and writing the stored values, each digit of these values by a number of pulses corresponding to the digit is stored and the magnetic heads are moved helically and parallel to the platen of the machine and the values entered in the columns of the account card are written and read magnetically.
This establishment has u. a. the disadvantage that it requires a large number of special magnetic heads, u. between as many as the number of booking columns and another special magnetic head for synchronization purposes, which only performs a rotating movement. All magnetic heads also require several gaps and two contact springs each, which grind on a contact plate for a certain time during rotation, u. zw. So that the contact is closed when a gap slides past the account card. Such sliding contact arrangements including the associated electrical transmission means are known to be extremely prone to failure. Magnetic writing and reading also require a lot of time in view of the helical movement of the magnetic heads or magnetic tracks.
The object of the invention is to avoid the disadvantages of the known devices.
The invention relates to a device used for automatic balance transfer to accounting machines or similar purposes for automatically writing and reading information on the magnetizable surface of an information carrier which can be retracted into the machine, the magnetic head and the information carrier being able to be moved relative to one another. The essence of the invention is that the part of the device that is moved for magnetic writing, reading or erasing has a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
continuous back and forth movement (oscillating movement executes and preferably its direction of movement forms a right or almost right angle with the direction of movement of the information carrier.
Data, characters, digits, values, addresses, words, bits, signals or frequencies can be considered as information. It is advisable to arrange the information carrier or the magnetic head so that it is movable and to read the information before the information carrier is drawn into the machine. In addition, it is particularly expedient to arrange the magnetic head or the information carrier not yet drawn into the machine so that it can move back and forth along a horizontal line. It is also advisable to combine the circuit of the winding of the magnetic head with test circuits for carrying out control processes and to provide switching means for the writing and control reading process. For testing (control) z.
B. a coincidence circuit in connection with a reverse shift register, which in turn is in connection with the keyboard of the machine. The circuits and switching means can be selected in such a way that the control reading process immediately follows the writing movement of the magnetic head, e.g. B. when the head is returned to its starting position. If the values to be compared do not match, the coincidence circuit supplies a signal (command) for a repetition process.

As can be seen in FIG. 1, the account card l carries on the foot, d. wagens 16, in order to fully reveal the individual parts of the machine drawn below the map. When inserting the card, for example by hand, in the direction of arrow 9, i.e. downwards, it passes the air space between the resilient roller 13 and the air gap 4 of the magnetic head 3 on the left and the air space between the two retaining cushions 17, 18 on the right until it rests with its lower edge on the horizontal rollers 8 mounted on the paper carriage 16 and thus assumes the dotted, precisely defined rest position (initial position) in which it is supported by the parts 3, 13 on the one hand and 17,

When the magnetic head 3 is moved axially to and fro in the direction of the double arrow 6, 6 'and thus when writing, reading and erasing magnetically, the roller 13 presses the magnetic surface 2 of the card elastically against the gap 4 of the magnetic head 3. When energized of magnets 14 and 19, on the other hand, roller 13 is lifted in the direction of arrow 15 and pad 17 is lifted in the direction of arrow 20. The card can now be further down in a known manner, e.g. B. motorized, up to the desired

The operation of the device according to FIGS. 1 and 2, in particular the overall arrangement according to FIG. 3, is as follows:
It is assumed that numerical values are introduced into the arithmetic unit 25 via the keyboard 27, calculated and the result, e.g. B. the number 1234 as the new balance, introduced into the shift register 23 and then the following operations are to be carried out: 1; Magnetic writing of a value on the account card
When writing a value in series, e.g.
B. the number 1234 in binary encrypted form, on the magnetic surface 2 of the account card 1, the switching means s, s, s are operated. The im
The value in the arithmetic unit 25 is introduced into the shift register 23 via the lines 28. The binary coded number 1234 contained in this moves digit-by-pulse from left to right, i.e. one after the other. H. in the direction of arrow 29 or 29 ', and then via line 30, 30', switching means SI '
Write amplifier 22, switching means s, flexible line 21 in the winding 5 of the magnetic head 3.
The same value 1234 is simultaneously output from the output 23 "of the shift register 23 via lines 30, 31,
Switching means Sg and input 23 'fed back into the shift register. Simultaneously with the pushing process, the magnetic head 3, driven by the magnet 7, also moves from left to right, and writes down the numerical value 1234 in series in binary code.
2. Check the written value
To check the value just written, i. H. the number 1234, the shift register 23 is first reversed in such a way that the applied shift pulses cause a pulse flow in the opposite direction, i.e. in the direction of arrow 34, so that connection 23 "now becomes the input and connection 23 'becomes the output. In addition, the magnetic head 3 is moved back, driven by the restoring force, that is from right to left. At the same time, the switching means s 1, s, s are switched back to their starting position and the switching means k 1, k, are actuated for the purpose of control reading.
The numbers 4, 3, 2, 1 read in series in reverse order now migrate from the winding 5 of the magnetic head 3 via the flexible line 21, switching means si, read amplifier 22 and switching means kl to the first input 24'der
Coincidence circuit 24. At the same time wander in the cycle of synchronization pulses that are known in
The digits in the shift register 23, this time in the order 4, 3, 2, 1, in the direction of the arrow 34 via output 23 ', switching means, lines 31 to the second input 24 "of the coincidence circuit are obtained from the magnetic information 24; they are also fed back into shift register 23 via line 30 and input 23 ″ as a precaution.
The pulses introduced via the two inputs 24 ′ and 24 ″ are compared with one another in the coincidence circuit 24.
If the compared values agree, the control reading is ended; if they do not agree, on the other hand, a signal or command runs via the output 24 ′ ″ of the coincidence circuit 24 and the line 33, which causes the entire write process to be carried out again.
3. Reading and deleting the written value
When reading the written value, the magnetic head 3, driven by the magnet 7, moves again from left to right. The pulses generated in the winding 5 of the magnetic head 3 are amplified in the read amplifier 22, passed one after the other via the input 23 ′ of the shift register 23 and supplied to the arithmetic unit 31 in a suitable manner via the lines 28. The control while reading can e.g. B. by comparing the written value with the possibly also magnetically written complementary value.
If the reading is wrong, it is repeated; on the other hand, if it is correct, the magnetogram can be erased to magnetic zero when the magnetic head 3 moves back, i.e. from right to left, preferably by a high-frequency current. H. be magnetically neutralized, resulting in a particularly low interference level.
The invention ensures u. a. the following: It is sufficient to apply a more or less long magnetic spot across the foot of the card, which is anyway free. In terms of usable space for columns to be labeled, valuable writing space is not lost either on the front or on the back of the card. The length of the magnetic spot, i.e. H. if necessary, be extended over the entire width of the card.
A particularly simple, expedient and reliable control method can be used. For example, immediately after the magnetic inscription, a control reading can be inserted in connection with a simultaneous comparison with the "word" still in the shift register without any loss of time. A possible repetition of an incorrect writing process can easily be carried out. The immediate repetition of a reading found to be incorrect is also possible if, when writing the "word" to be stored, its complementary value is also included.

was written. The reading can be repeated until the comparison values agree.
In none of these cases does the card have to be moved in or out separately or additionally.
It is also possible to insert a separate erase cycle, for example with a high-frequency erase current, into the resetting process of the magnetic head after a (correct) reading process without any appreciable loss of time, thereby reducing the interference level.
The wear on the magnetic head can be reduced to a minimum, because on the one hand the
Magnetic spot itself can be kept very short and, on the other hand, the movement of the magnetic head only takes place over the length of the magnetic spot, i.e. not on the bare cardboard, the surface of which would cause severe wear (abrasion).
The order of the digits (decades) of the "word", e.g. B. numerical value, can remain the same when writing and reading, because each time the movement of the magnetic head takes place in the same direction with respect to the magnetizable surface of the card. A reversal of the sequence of the digits (decades) in the electronic part of the system (shift register and coincidence circuit) could therefore possibly be omitted if a control reading is dispensed with after the writing process.
It is also possible to maintain a feed rate between the magnetic head and the card that is the same from card to card, since the movement is in no way dependent on a transport friction.
Finally, it is possible to get by with a single magnetic head in single or double track design including the associated switching and amplifier devices.
The invention is naturally not limited to the embodiment described and drawn. For example, the pull magnet 14 (FIG. 2) can be omitted if the rear leg of the U-bracket 11 has an inclined angle (provided on the paper trolley of the machine). or wedge guide works together in such a way that the pressure roller 13 is lifted from the card 1 when it runs into the rest position (to the right) as soon as the gap 4 of the magnetic head 3 leaves the magnetizable surface 2 and vice versa, i.e. H. that the pressure roller 13 is released again when running into the working position (to the left) and thus rests on the card 1 again as soon as the gap 4 of the magnetic head 3 passes the magnetizable surface 2 again.
Furthermore, the card 1 can be moved horizontally back and forth continuously along the length of the magnetizable surface 2 before it is drawn into the machine, that is, not in steps, while the magnetic head 3 is stationary. This design also ensures essentially the same
Advantages like the embodiment shown.
