Siehe Tabelle I (Anlage).

Siehe Tabelle VII (Anlage).
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Siehe Tabelle XII (Anlage).

There is a difference between these two diols in that the polycondensation reactions that lead to unsaturated polyester resins are generally more convenient to carry out with 2,2-dimethylhexanediol- (1,3) than with 2,2,4-trimethylpentanediol- (1 , 3).
It goes without saying for the person skilled in the art that no alkali-resistant polyester resins are produced

nen, but that mixtures of 2, 3, 4 or more of the glycols mentioned can be used with success, e.g. B. Mixtures of 2,2-dimethylhexanediol- (1,3) and 2,2,4-trimethylpentanediol or mixtures containing 2-dimethylpropanediols substituted in both the l- and l- and 3-positions (1,3 ) contain. Mixtures which only contain 2,2-dimethylpropanediols (1,3) substituted in the 1,3-position are also suitable.
In order to obtain saponification-resistant polyester resins, however, it is not necessary for the diolic constituents in the unsaturated polymerizable polyester components to consist entirely of 2,2-dimethylpropanediols (1,3) substituted in the 1- or 1,3-position. Often you will also use other glycols to modify the diolic components of the polyester. Are particularly suitable for this purpose. B. substituted in the 2- and 3-position propanediols (1, 3) of the general formula
EMI2.2
The same applies to the radicals R1 and R2 as was said above for the 2, 2-dimethylpropanediols (1, 3) (formulas I and II) substituted in the 1 and 1, 3-positions.
So there are also very saponification-resistant polyester resins obtained if, among other things, mixtures of z. B.

2,4-Trimethylpentanediol - (1, 3) aldol condensation products of any mixtures of n-butyraldehyde and i-butyraldehyde can be obtained by subsequent hydrogenation, the reaction products not needing to be separated into their individual components. It can e.g. B. hydrogenated aldol condensates of n- and 1-butyraldehyde in a molar ratio of 1: 1 or 1: 2 can be used with good success in the production of saponification-resistant polyester resins.
It goes without saying that correspondingly hydrogenated aldol condensates from other aldehydes or from aldehyde mixtures of 2, 3, 4 or more different aldehydes. which contain more than 2, preferably 3-5 and at most 8 carbon atoms can be used.
In addition to the 2, 2-dirmethylpropanediols (1,3) (formulas I and II) substituted in the 1- or 1- and 3-positions, similar ways to the propanediols (1,3) ( Formula III) but not so advantageous, also in 2,2-position substituted propanediols = (1, 3) of the general formula

After the reference to glycols, which can also be used to modify the diolic constituents of the saponification-resistant unsaturated polyester resins according to the invention, it should be emphasized that these glycols (formulas III and IV) are not the causative factor for achieving the extraordinarily good saponification strengths. Rather, these are causally based on the use of 2,2-dimethylpropanediol- (1, 3) (formulas 1 and 11) substituted in the 1- or 1- and 3-positions. The co-use

The viscosity of their solutions can be adjusted by the measures mentioned.
The use of single-valued connections is particularly advantageous when triple-valued or higher-valued connections are also used.
The ratio of the carboxylic acids to the alcohols is generally chosen so that for every esterifiable hydroxyl group there is an esterifiable carboxyl group. However, it is often advantageous to use a component in an approximately 5 to 1% excess, especially when using starting materials which are volatile under the reaction conditions.
The unsaturated polyesters can be obtained in the usual way, for which no protection is claimed here, by condensation or transesterification of the starting materials, acid numbers below 50 being achieved if possible. Polymerization inhibitors, e.g. B. hydroquinone and optionally esterification catalysts such as p-toluenesulfonic acid, alkali, alkaline earth and / or heavy metal compounds are added. It can also be advantageous to condensation water or alcohol azeotrope with an organic solvent, such as. B. xylene to be distilled off. The reaction is expediently carried out in an inert gas stream with exclusion of oxygen.
The unsaturated polyesters thus produced using the combinations according to the invention can be mixed with the monomers customary for polyester resin production and then polymerized. In general, the blends may contain about 15-85% by weight, preferably 50-75% by weight, of unsaturated polyester and about 85% by weight, preferably about 50-25% by weight, of monomeric compounds, based on the total polymerizable mixture included.
The suitable monomers, which can be used individually or in admixture with one another, have the general formula

The unsaturated polyester resins according to the invention are, because of their surprisingly high resistance to saponification, particularly suitable for all purposes in which this property is of particular importance, e.g. B. for boat building, for the production and lining of containers, for parts of washing machines and bodies, for corrugated glasses, pipes, etc. You can also use for the production of water or. alkali-resistant paints and molding compounds can be used as well as for fashionable articles, e.g. B. Buttons.
The following examples are intended to illustrate what has been said so far. The parts given are parts by weight.
The unsaturated polyesters treated in the individual examples must all be presented in a manner customary in the production of unsaturated polyester resins. The reactants are z. B. polycondensed in a known manner in a stirred vessel while passing through an inert gas and driving off the condensation water at elevated temperature. The molar proportions of the starting materials for the unsaturated polyesters are given in the individual examples. In order to achieve comparable results, all unsaturated polyester condensates listed here which are stabilized with 0.01% by weight of hydroquinone, unless expressly stated otherwise, are characterized by a degree of condensation corresponding to the acid number 20.
The further processing of the unsaturated polyester condensates is also carried out in a comparable manner: the polyesters are homogenized in the weight ratios given in the individual examples with the other components to form resins, which are each mixed with 1.2 parts of a 50% by weight suspension of cyclohexanone hydroperoxide in dibutyl phthalate for initiation and 0.3 parts by weight of a 1a1oigen cobalt naphthenate solution in styrene are added. For the polymerization, the mixture is left at room temperature for 6 hours and then heated for 16 hours at 120 ° C. in a drying cabinet. To compare their resistance to saponification, all of the polymers obtained are boiled in 30% by weight of aqueous potassium hydroxide solution.
The results are summarized in tables for the individual examples.
Example 1: 6 different unsaturated polyesters are produced, the acid components remaining the same. The proportion of 2,2-dimethylhexanediol- (1,3) in the glycol components is gradually reduced and replaced by the equivalent amount of propylene glycol- (1,2). As Table I shows, the alkali resistance decreases, but even relatively small amounts of the diol according to the invention are sufficient to achieve a significant improvement in the saponification resistance compared to the resin which contains only propylene glycol- (1,2). See Table I (Appendix).
Example 2: Four different unsaturated polyesters are produced, the acid

: 2, and 2, 2, 4-trimethylpentanediol (1. 3) and n-octanediol are used. It should be noted that the resins which are produced using the octanediols according to the invention are resistant to saponification, while the resin, which contains n-octanediol, is attacked by lye. See Table II (Appendix).
EMI5.2
The resins produced using the diol according to the invention are resistant to the influence of alkalis, while all resins which contain the 2,2-propanediol- (1,3) condensed in are more or less attacked. See Table III (Appendix).
Example 4: 3 different unsaturated polyesters are produced, the acid components remaining the same. 2, 2-Dimethylhexanediol (1, 3), 2-methyl- 2-propylpropanediol (1, 3) and propanediol (1, 3) are used as glycol components. It turns out that the introduction of alkyl radicals into the molecule of propanediol (1,3) generally improves the alkali resistance of the corresponding resins, but that, surprisingly, optimum saponification resistance is only achieved when using the diols according to the invention. See Table IV (Appendix).
Example 5: In analogous polyester resins which can be used to produce non-flammable moldings, on the one hand 2, 2, 4-trimethylpentanediol- (1, 3) and on the other hand a mixture of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol are incorporated. The superiority of the unsaturated polyester resins according to the invention with regard to the saponification resistance can be seen from Table V. See Table V (Appendix).
Example 6: There are 2,2-dimethylhexanediol (1,3) and 2,2, 4-trimethylpentanediol (1,3) on the one hand with 2,2-dimethylpropanediol (1,3) and propylene glycol (l , 2) on the other hand compared. The results are summarized in Table VI. See Table VI (Appendix).
Example 7: This example shows that the resistance to saponification of resins which are produced using i-phthalic acid can be increased significantly by using the diols according to the invention. See Table VII (Appendix).
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Example 8: 4 different unsaturated polyesters are produced, the acid components remaining the same. Various mixtures of 2, 2-dimethylhexanediol (1,3), 2, 2-dimethylpropanediol (1,3) and propylene glycol (1,2) are used as glycols. Table VIII shows, among other things, that the good saponification resistances of the resins produced using glycol mixtures are caused by the diol according to the invention and not by the 2,2-dimethylpropane diol (1,3). See Table VIII (Appendix).
Example 9: The unsaturated polyesters according to the invention can be mixed with many combinations of monomers, it being particularly striking that even resins which are produced using diallyl phthalate and triallyl cyanurate, i.e. components that make other polyester resins very susceptible to the influence of saponifying agents make, among other things, have a surprising level of saponification resistance. See Table IX (Appendix).
Example 10: While it is known that the usual unsaturated polyester resins are more easily attacked by alkali solutions, the higher the acid number of the unsaturated polyester used, the use of the diols according to the invention brings about such a great protective effect that there are practically no differences in the resistance to saponification between two resins whose acid numbers are very far apart are to be determined. See Table X (Appendix).
Example 11: In this example a polyester resin is used which is only slightly unsaturated. The resin is accordingly only weakly crosslinked, but surprisingly it is extremely resistant to alkali. See Table XI (Appendix).
Example 12: This example shows, among other things, that in addition to the diols according to the invention, propanediols (1, 3) disubstituted in the 2, 3 and 2, 2-positions can also be used in the production of polyester resins which are difficult to hydrolyze without affecting the alkali resistance of the Polymers are noticeably reduced. Above all, it has been shown that mixtures of different isomeric octanediols, such as those obtained in the hydrogenation of the aldol condensates of n "and i-butyraldehyde, are outstandingly suitable for the preparation of polyester resins which are difficult to hydrolyze. See Table XII (Appendix).
