Torch for protective arc welding

B. This extension of the contact tip beyond the gas jacket has a specific purpose. When welding with small wires, e.g. B. with a diameter of 0.51 to 0.76 mm, the distance between the contact tip and the workpiece is critical because of the resistance heating of the welding wire. If, for example, the distance between the contact tip and the workpiece is changed by 3.2 mm when the wire is fed with constant potential and a constant feed speed of the wire and a wire of 0.51 mm diameter, this results in a change in the current strength of about 20 g, which results in the welding profile and the penetration can be adversely affected.
If you keep the distance between the contact tip and the workpiece as short as possible, higher currents can be achieved for a certain job performance. Higher currents result in deeper penetration, which is of course desirable.
Another advantage of this arrangement is that it usually gives good visibility. When working with small diameter wires, it is desirable to maintain a distance of between 6 and 13 mm between the touch tip and the workpiece. If the contact tip is extended beyond the gas jacket, the operator can see both the arc and the weld pool, so that he can regulate the distance between said tip and the workpiece accordingly.
The contact tip 58 preferably has a diameter of 9.5 mm and is made of heat-treated bronze material of high conductivity. At the upper end, it is provided with a thread which is screwed into the wire guide tube 26. The current is absorbed by the thin wire when it passes through a hole provided in the contact tip 58. The metal nozzle 62 is screwed into the insulator 60 and pinned to it. These two parts therefore form a unit that is screwed onto the nozzle attachment. Since the current is fed to the contact tip via the wire guide tube 26, this insulator prevents current flow to the metal nozzle.
