Torsionswaage zur Bestimmung kleinster
Gewichtsänderungen an Proben

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Torsion balance for determining the smallest
Weight changes on samples
The present invention relates to a rotary balance for the most precise determination of the slightest changes in weight on material samples to be examined, such as. B. Changes in weight due to the action of electromagnetic forces, as they occur when measuring the magnetic susceptibility of rocks, changes in Archimedes' buoyancy force acting on bodies in gaseous media, changes in weight due to water loss when the samples are dehydrated or due to gas absorption on the samples.
Special microbalances are usually used for such purposes, the change in weight being obtained from the difference between two exact weighings. Often times, any weight determination must be made with a relative error of only 0.001% and even less to get a final error of approximately 1 to 2 Ufo.
The corresponding measurements. Microbalances are expensive and fragile, so that trained personnel are required to use them; on the other hand, the determinations carried out with these balances are very time-consuming.
Rotary balances can also be used, which have the advantage of displaying the weight difference directly. The usual rotary balances are not suitable for such purposes, since they have only a relatively low load capacity with great sensitivity; the forces to be measured, which are triggered by the samples on the balance, are far too small to be measured even by means of a highly sensitive rotary balance.
In the rotary balance according to the present invention, the above-mentioned disadvantages are eliminated in that the torsion thread is relieved of the weight of the movable balance system including the load and the counterweight by utilizing the buoyancy of a float attached to this system, which is completely immersed in a liquid whose free surface is at the level of the torsion thread, and that means are provided to bring the center of gravity of the movable balance system, including the load and the counterweight, into the immediate vicinity of the swimmer's center of buoyancy. Since the rotating thread is relieved of the weights of the playing balance part and the sample, it can be made very thin, but the sensitivity of the balance is very high that it is independent of the load capacity.
In order to achieve maximum sensitivity, the stabilizing force pair formed from the weight of the playing balance part and the Archimedean buoyancy force has been reduced to a value that is practically zero by the fact that the center of pressure coincides with the center of gravity of the playing balance part.
The subject matter of the invention is shown in an exemplary embodiment in the drawing. The drawing shows a schematic view of the rotary balance.
The balance according to the invention has a movable part which consists of a lever 1 which is formed by two arms a1 and a, which lie in their extension and which are attached to a central ring b. The axis of the arms a, a gsht through the center of the ring b. At the end of the arm al there are two leaflets 2 and 3, made of hard material, which have conical recesses into which the tips 4 and 5 enter, so that the attached part 6, which carries the weighing sample, is supported on the balance arm al. A counterweight 7 can be moved on the other arm a2 of the lever. The lever 1 is provided with a zero position indicator, e.g.
B. a concave mirror
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
gel 8, attached to the lever arm 32. The concave mirror 8 casts a light mark emanating from a light source 10 onto a graduated scale 9.
A vertical, right-angled frame 11 is attached to the ring b, by means of which a connection between the movable part and the load-bearing elements, namely a float 12, a torsion thread 13 and a tension thread 14, is achieved.
The float 12 can be brought to the required height by screwing the threaded rod 15 into the part 16 on the frame 11, and held in this position by means of a lock nut. On the rod 15 there is also a weight 17 which is used for fine adjustment of the height of the center of gravity of the movable balance part.
The float 12 is completely submerged in a liquid located in the container 18, which also fulfills the function of a damper for the vibrations of the movable balance part. If the float is made of thin, deformable material, the rod 15 is hollowed out in a tubular shape for the purpose of pressure compensation.
The torsion thread 13 has two clamping points 19 and 20. The clamping point 19 is located on the vertical frame 11 and the thread is attached by means of a conical pin 21. At the clamping point 20, the thread is held by means of a chuck on which a pointer to indicate the Angle of rotation sits. The pointer 23 can be a vernier running in front of a division 24. The tension thread 14 keeps the torsion thread 13 taut with a constant force exerted by a weak spring 25.
Both threads 13 and 14 lie in the same horizontal plane at the level of the meniscus of the liquid in the container 18. The axis of the threads passes through the center point of that rod cross-section which coincides with the water level. A precaution that has the effect of reducing the sources of error from the moment of force of the surface tension to a minimum.
The balance is provided with a one- or two-part weighing pan 26, depending on its purpose.
In the case of use to measure the magnetic sensitivity, the weighing pan is made in two parts, u. The weighing sample is placed on the lower part 26 in the field of a magnetic coil 27, but on the upper part 28, which is sufficiently far away from the coil 27, practically non-magnetic ballast is necessary until the weight of the movable balance part is completed Value given, corresponding to the volume of the float 12 and the density of the liquid in the loading
EMI2.1
Both parts 26 and 28 are mounted on a common carrier 29 which is held on the suspension system 6 of the sample.
The balance is also provided with a locking mechanism consisting of a hook 30 which grasps the movable balance part and presses it onto the cutting edges 31 and 32. The hook 30 sits on an axis 36 of the frame 33 for the liquid container 18. The pressing force of the hook 30 on the frame 11 is kept constant by means of a spring 34. The spring force is transmitted to the hook by the lever 35 and the shaft 36, so that the contact pressure is independent of the force exerted by the person operating the locking cam 37.
The procedure for presetting the balance in order to reduce the force pair formed from the weight of the balance part and the Archimedean buoyancy to a minimum in accordance with a constant weight is as follows:
The weight 17 is raised against the upper end of the threaded rod 15 and the float 12 is lowered by screwing the rod 15 in the part 16 until a tilting moment is obtained by lowering the pressure center below the weight center. The occurrence of the tilting moment is determined by the instability of the zero position of the playing balance part when the playing balance part suddenly goes through the zero position through slow, continuous and uniform rotation of the torsion thread or slow adjustment of the counterweight 7, without it being able to be held in this position .
Now the float is slowly raised by screwing the rod 15 until the position of the playing balance part is stabilized. The presence of a tilting moment is determined by the fact that each position of the counterweight 7 and each angle of rotation of the thread 13 corresponds to a certain position of the playing part, one of these positions being the zero position.
After the first stable position has been reached, the rod 15 is screwed again until the previous unstable position is reached, in which the rod is held by means of the lock nut.
The fine adjustment is then carried out by rotating the counterweight 17, the criterion being the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Regulation of the stability or instability of the zero position of the playing carriage part is used until a difference between the stability and the instability can be determined only with difficulty. In this situation, both the center of weight of the playing part and the center of the pressure forces which give rise to the lift are on a straight line parallel to the axes of the threads 13 and 14; the pair of forces formed from the weight of the playing part of the car and the Archimedean buoyancy force is a minimum due to the torsion thread, but the sensitivity of the balance is a maximum.
To carry out the determinations, the sample to be examined is placed on the weighing pan 26 of the balance
EMI3.1
A normal laboratory balance of medium sensitivity can be used or the rotary balance itself, which only begins to vibrate freely when the weight of the weighing sample on the weighing pan is approximately equal to the weight of the sample and ballast.
After the weight has been completed up to the required value, the torsion thread 13 is twisted in such a way that the playing balance part moves into the zero position and the corresponding display is noted on the scale 24.
A magnetic field is then generated by sending an electric current through the coil 27 which, thanks to the magnetic susceptibility of the sample on the weighing pan 26, forces the playing balance part to leave the zero position. In order to bring it back into this position, the torsion thread 13 is rotated again. The new display is noted on the graduated disk 24. The result obtained from the difference between the two displays gives the force measured. The balance is calibrated by comparing it with marked weights (milligrams).
The balance according to the invention has the following advantages:
It has all the advantages of the rotary balance, namely high sensitivity and easy reading even with a high load capacity (over 10 g); it guarantees the achievement of the highest sensitivity (minimum stabilizing force couple) through simple presetting, without a particularly precise execution of its components being necessary; the vibrations of the playing balance part are excellently dampened; the critical damping can easily be achieved by choosing a liquid with a suitable viscosity or by changing the dimensions of the container 18; the liquid brought for the swimmer can be an oil with a very low vapor pressure that allows the balance to be used in a vacuum.
