<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

EMI2.1
paraffinic fragments with predominantly 2, 3 and 4 carbon atoms.
If the specified reaction temperatures are observed, these fragments react only to a very small extent with the formation of cyclic compounds - which form aromatics, tar and elemental carbon when the reaction temperature rises due to subsequent dehydrogenation - and can easily be converted into gases of the desired composition using conversion catalysts (see osterr . Patent No. 205154).
It has now been found that, contrary to the previous state of the art, especially in cyclical processes in which the heat required for the conversion is generated by periodic combustion of the carbon deposited during the gas generation period, the optimal physical reaction conditions are maintained to a particular degree depends on the residence time of the reaction mixture in front of the contact bed, the dimensions of the reaction space and on the arrangement of the contact bed. In particular, it was found that, in addition to the contact dwell time, the dwell time of the reactants in the reaction space before reaching the contact layer has a significant influence on the course of the conversion reaction, especially with regard to the proportion of the aromatization reactions in the overall reaction.
The hydrocarbons to be transformed are evaporated mixed with water vapor and / or hydrogen-containing gases. It has now been shown that the residence time of the hydrocarbon gas-vapor mixture before contact, in addition to the reaction temperature used, is of particular importance for this. whether a purely thermally uncontrollable decomposition of the hydrocarbon molecules sets in before the contact bed is reached, which leads to the formation of polyunsaturated compounds from which aromatics, tar and finally carbon are formed through cyclization and dehydrogenation. In the reshaping process customary to date, the residence time of the reaction mixture before reaching the contact bed is 8-15 seconds with a relatively low contact residence time.
Such long residence times in front of the contact bed lead to extensive, purely thermally uncontrollable decomposition of the hydrocarbon molecules with formation of aromatics. According to the invention, this disadvantage is eliminated in that the dwell time before contact does not exceed 5 seconds. In order to avoid uncontrollable side reactions with certainty and at the same time to achieve sufficient mixing of the reactants and complete evaporation, residence times between 3 and 5 seconds proved to be the most favorable. It is best to adapt the volume of the reaction space to the volume of the reactants flowing through.
To use reaction spaces in which the 100-fold reciprocal value of the space velocity, calculated from the end gas volume (Nm / hour) and the volume of the reaction space (m; space velocity factor), between 1 and 3, preferably 1.0-2.0 amounts.
A uniform distribution of the carbon deposited during gas generation and thus maintaining a desired temperature gradient can be achieved if the catalyst volume and cross section of the reaction space are matched to one another in such a way that the height of the contact bed
EMI2.2
Reaction space (m2) formed ratio between 1, 0 and 3, 0 is. Favorable results can be achieved with a coefficient of thermal conductivity of the catalyst of 3.0 and ratios of 1.6 to 2.6. With catalyst beds above a ratio of 3.0, it is difficult to maintain the desired temperature gradient, since hot zones form in the upper third of the catalyst bed, during the. The foot of the catalyst bed cools down during the process.
With catalyst beds below a ratio of 1.0, the uniform application of the reaction surface and the maintenance of the desired temperature gradient cause difficulties. The dimensions of the contact fillings described correspond to a contact

conductive cracking catalysts and 80-70% in the reforming zone, which preferably contains dehydrogenation catalysts.
It has also been shown that the free space between the contact zones should not be larger than half the contact dwell time in the overall bed, i.e. no more than 0.5 seconds. For structural reasons, there are between primary and secondary contact Clearances that require contact dwell times of more than 1 second are useful. To arrange primary and secondary contact one above the other, or to reduce the cross-section of the reaction space in the intermediate zone.
A reduction in the cross-section in the zone between the contact beds has the further advantage that a uniform application of the secondary contact can be achieved by generating a turbulent flow.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
If the specified dimensional ratios are observed, the total residence time of the reactants in the reaction space is approx. 5-7 seconds, with a residence time of the hydrocarbon gas to be converted
EMI3.1
50.1-0.2 sec in the primary cleavage zone and 0.4-0.6 sec in the secondary deformation zone. When more selective catalysts are used, the total residence time is reduced only insignificantly, while the contact residence times in the reaction zones of cleavage and reshaping are reduced in proportion to the increase in selectivity. The resulting optimum catalyst loading is 300 to 600 Nm3 / m3 / hour. with a specific carbon deposition on the catalyst bed of 40 to 70 kg / mS / hour.
According to the invention, the reaction space is divided into a cleavage zone and a deformation zone downstream of this. The reaction space is expediently dimensioned so that the space velocity
EMI3.2
20-30% are accounted for by the gap contact zone and 80-70% by the deformation zone with the dehydration contacts. The free space between the contact zones is preferably dimensioned such that the residence time of the reaction mixture does not exceed half the contact residence time, so that uncontrolled side reactions can be avoided with certainty.
The evaporation chamber is located in front of the reaction chamber, in which the hydrocarbons to be converted are intimately mixed with the heated reactants and evaporated. The evaporation chamber is dimensioned so that the residence time of the reaction mixture in it is not more than 5 seconds, preferably 2.5 to 3.5 seconds. Experience has shown that this residence time is sufficient to achieve complete evaporation of the hydrocarbons to be reformed without uncontrolled secondary reactions taking place.
According to the invention, the outlet end of the deformation zone and the inlet end of the cleavage zone are connected to one another by a gas recirculation channel through which a partial flow of the generated gas can be returned to the reaction chamber in order to increase the hydrogen partial pressure or to change the residence time in the reaction chamber. Heat exchangers are expediently arranged at the inlet end of the cleavage zone, in front of the evaporation chamber and at the outlet end of the deformation zone. The heat exchanger at the inlet end of the cleavage zone is heated during the heating season by the hot exhaust gases and, if necessary, by a burner arranged above, so that the gases, water vapor or water flowing through it during the gassing period.
Air and the partial flow of the gas mixture produced, which is circulated. absorb the heat required for complete evaporation of the hydrocarbons to be converted and a reaction temperature of 650 to 750 C is maintained in the evaporation chamber. The heat exchanger at the outlet end of the deformation zone is heated by the hot gas mixture leaving the reaction space and transfers the heat absorbed during the gassing period to the oxygen-containing gases, especially air, introduced for the combustion of the substances deposited in the reaction space. It has proven to be useful to cool the production gas down to 250-3500 ° C.
As a result of the relatively short periods required for cyclical gas generation, it has proven advantageous to arrange cross-sectional constrictions in front of and behind the heat exchanger in which the free cross-section is reduced to 1 / 3-1 / 5 of its area. This measure achieves a uniform loading of the heat exchangers and an optimal heat transfer in both directions. At the inlet end of the cleavage zone or in front of the heat exchanger connected upstream of it, there are introductions for steam, air or other oxygen-containing gases and for a partial flow of the gas generated. These feeds can also be combined to form a common line.
In the case of a common feed line, the gas return duct ends in the feed for water vapor, air, etc., in which a set of propellant nozzles is arranged, through which a partial flow of the gas mixture generated is sucked in like an injector and conveyed into the reaction chamber by means of water vapor supplied under pressure.
If hydrocarbons with a low CH ratio are converted, the substances (carbon) separated during the gassing period often do not provide enough heat when they are burned in the heating period to heat the reaction chamber to the required temperature; therefore there may be one or more burners in the masonry behind the deformation zone and the crevice zone in which oil or other fuels can be burned if the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
combustion of the deposited carbon does not provide enough heat to heat the reaction chamber to the required temperature.
In the drawings, expedient embodiments of the devices according to the invention are shown schematically. In the devices according to FIGS. 1 and 2, the gap and deformation zone are separated from one another by a free space. 3 and 4 show devices in which the gap and deformation zone are arranged directly one above the other.
The reaction space consists essentially of a cleavage zone 1 with a lattice or a bed of fission catalysts 2 and a deformation zone 3 with a lattice or a bed of dehydrogenation catalysts 4. In front of the gap zone there is an evaporation chamber 5 and a heat exchanger 6 Heating of the reactants, the water vapor, the air, etc. during gas generation; it is heated up by the combustion gases that flow through it during the heating season. Behind the deformation zone 3 there is also a heat exchanger 7 in which the oxygen-containing gases are heated during the heating period to burn the deposited carbon. The heat exchanger 7 is heated by the hot production gas leaving the reaction chamber.
Cross-sectional constrictions 8 are provided in front of and behind the heat exchangers 6 and 7 in order to achieve the most uniform possible application of the heat exchange surfaces in both directions.
Via the lines 9, 10 and 11, the device is supplied with steam and. between line 9 as process steam for the conversion and as flushing steam after gas generation, via line 10 as atomization steam during the conversion and via line 11 as flushing steam after the heating period.
EMI4.1
through which a partial flow of the gas produced can be returned to the inlet end of the cleavage zone.
Combustion air is introduced via lines 15 and 16 during the heating period and the heating medium is supplied via lines 17 and 18, if this is necessary in order to heat the reaction space to the required reaction temperature. The combustion gases leave the system through line 19.
During the gas generation period, the water vapor and / or other oxygen-containing gases entering the reaction chamber through line 9 and the partial flow of the generated gas fed in via line 14 are heated in heat exchanger 6 to such an extent that the heat content is sufficient to reduce the hydrocarbons entering via line 12 be finely atomized with the aid of the water vapor entering via line 10, to evaporate completely.
The reactants are intimately mixed in the evaporation chamber 5 and then pass into the cleavage zone 1 and deformation zone 3, where the hydrocarbons are converted into gas with a composition similar to city gas. The hot production gas gives off its sensible heat to the heat exchanger 7 and leaves the system via line 13.
As soon as the temperature in the reaction space has dropped to such an extent that the gas composition of the gas produced changes significantly, the reaction space is flushed with steam in the gassing direction and heated in countercurrent to the gassing direction. Combustion air is fed to the system through line 15, which is preheated in the heat exchanger 7 and then passes through the contact zones 4 and 2 of the forming and cleavage, where the carbon deposited during gas generation is burned. The carbon deposited at the contact zones is insufficient. To achieve the desired temperature gradient, hydrocarbons or other heating media can be fed through the feeds 17 and 18 in order to heat the flue gases to the necessary temperatures.
The hot flue gases give off their sensible heat to the heat exchanger 6 and leave the system via line 19, in which, if necessary, a heat exchanger can be provided in which the reactants, e.g. B. hydrocarbons to be converted or the combustion air can be preheated.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 2 differs from that according to FIG. 1 in that an intermediate space is provided between the gap zone and the deformation zone, the cross section of which is narrowed and which is preferably dimensioned so that the flow time of the reactants through this intermediate space is not makes up more than half of the contact dwell time.
In FIGS. 3 and 4, embodiments are shown in which the gap and the deformation zone are arranged directly one above the other. The embodiment according to FIG. 4 differs from that according to FIG. 3 by a different design of the reaction space and a different position of the cross-sectional constriction 8 following the reaction space.
