Metallelektrode.

Metal electrode.
The subject of the present invention is a metal electrode for electric arc lamps.
A large number of experiments established the fact that titanium, for example, has properties which, when this metal is used, when it

result in a remarkable increase in candle strength and burning time. Apart from that, mechanically very resistant electrodes can be produced on titanium, so that manufacture is made easier and cheaper, and waste from breaking is reduced. Furthermore, since the arc formed between titanium electrodes, the

can be produced in a similar way to the known carbon rods. The rods thus pressed are dried in the open air at room temperature for several hours, whereby it is important to dry too quickly, which would spoil the shape of the rods. to avoid. The bars are then further dried in an oven at a temperature of about 200 ° C for about 4½ hours, after which the bars, carefully wrapped in carbon, are exposed to a temperature of 1200 to 1500 ° C for two days and two nights. Then the bars are cleaned and then are

It is advisable to add a small amount of powdered coal in the proportion of about 5% to the powdered alloy mentioned. However, if a titanium-iron alloy is used in the manufacture of the rods, which is obtained by the carbon reduction process, the addition of carbon is not necessary. Of course, instead of iron, other metals can also be used for alloying with the titanium.
The bars can too. if the alloy has been melted beforehand, it can be poured directly into molds and the carbon in this case can be added to the molten mass.
The percentage of titanium can vary between wide limits. without the

That proposals have been made, titanium chemically combined with carbon, which is known as titanium; Carbide is known to use for the production of arc light electrodes or metallic ferrotitanium as an additive to electrodes consisting mainly of carbon, is known. It should therefore be expressly noted that in the electrodes forming the subject of this invention the alloy forms the essential component of the electrodes, and that titanium is not chemically bonded to carbon.
The advantages of the new glow rods are based in particular on the fact that they contain a metal, namely titanium, which has light-emitting properties of unusually desirable quality to an exceptionally high degree, but which in itself is too imperfect a conductor to be used in the manufacture of glow rods serve.
The essence of the present invention is based on the discovery of the fact that such a metal is made very effective for lighting purposes by mixing it in the glow rod with another metal which has the necessary conductivity and which in itself has no lighting properties can.
