<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the production of a uniformly colored polyethylene
When polyethylene is treated with basic dyes, it has so far only been possible to obtain products whose weak coloring is insufficient for practical use. A coloring of this plastic through chemical bonding with dyes is not possible due to its structure. In the manufacture of colored polyethylene objects, one was therefore only dependent on the physical mixture of this plastic with pigment dyes, possibly mixed with a wax or the like. The superficial coloring, in particular the printing of polyethylene objects, could initially only be carried out if the dyes were used by means of a suitable compound adhering to the polyethylene object, such as. B.
Polyisobutylene or chlorosulfonated polyethylene are applied. However, none of these processes leads to satisfactory results, since the dyes are bound to the polyethylene only by physical forces, in particular adhesive forces, and can be removed very easily again, especially in the case of surface coloring.
The easy rub-off of the surface coloring or printing could later be countered by another known method in which the surface of the polyethylene object is made hydrophilic by treatment with chromosulfuric acid and then colored with basic dyes.
It is also known that, when polyethylenes are treated with oxidizing agents, carboxyl groups can be introduced before processing, which give the plastic hydrophilic properties.
At the same time as the oxidation, however, the plastic is degraded, so that the reaction product obtained is waxy masses with a molecular weight below 10,000, which can no longer be addressed as plastic. In some cases, the degradation with oxidizing agents such as nitric acid or ozone even led to dicarboxylic acids with a molecular weight between 120 and 770.
It was therefore not possible to make polyethylene hydrophilic by pretreating it with oxidizing agents without destroying the plastic.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that polyethylene, which is produced at pressures below 200 atmospheres, preferably with organometallic compounds as catalysts, has a greater resistance to oxidizing agents due to its structure, which is completely different from that of the previously known polyethylene, and therefore also after exposure of the oxidizing agent the. is long enough to create the amount of polar groups necessary for good coloring, retains its plastic properties.
It is therefore possible according to the method of the present invention to produce a uniformly dyed polyethylene if such a low-pressure polyethylene, which is usually obtained in powder form during production, is subjected to the action of oxidizing agents with thorough mixing before further processing and the mass is then treated with basic dyes.
To'-. Oxidation are the most common oxidizing agents. such as potassium permanganate, chromic sulfuric acid, air or ozone are suitable. However, the use of nitric acid as an oxidizing agent has proven to be particularly favorable, it being expedient to work at an elevated temperature.
To carry out the process according to the invention, the preferably pulverulent plastic is treated with an excess of oxidizing agent at room temperature or at an elevated temperature with thorough mixing until the desired degree of oxidation is achieved. The choice of the degree of oxidation or the duration of action of the oxidising agent is determined by whether a deeply colored or only slightly colored product is to be produced, the dyeability of the polyethylene increasing with the duration of oxidation. As a rule, the exposure time is 1-15 hours
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
necessary, although of course the time depends on the type of oxidizing agent used and the editing temperature chosen. In some cases it is also beneficial to use pressure.
If liquid oxidizing agents are used, the addition of emulsifiers or wetting agents to the reaction mixture has also proven advantageous.
After the oxidation has ended, the product is, if necessary, freed from any remaining oxidising agents by washing with water. Outwardly, the reaction product resembles the polyethylene used as the starting material, but contains a sufficient number of polar groups, especially carboxyl groups, to make the polyethylene dyeable. The molecular weight of the polyethylene has been lowered by the oxidation treatment, but without dropping to such an extent that the plastic properties are lost.
The coloring takes place by heating the polyethylene, which has been pretreated with oxidizing agents, with a dilute, mostly aqueous solution of a basic dye, preferably in the weakly acidic range. Subsequent to this treatment, the colored product is washed with water and / or alcohol until all of the dye not chemically bonded to the polyethylene has been removed.
To improve the properties, especially the processability of the plastic and to achieve a certain depth of color, it can in some cases be useful to mix the polyethylene before or after the dyeing with untreated polyethylene of the same or different, especially higher molecular weight.
The colored polyethylene is processed in a known manner. When selecting the basic dye, one only has to take into account that this dye is still sufficiently stable at the processing temperature.
The polyethylene dyed according to the invention is distinguished by the fact that it does not lose its color either in an acidic or in an alkaline medium. In contrast to polyethylene that is only colored on the surface, there is no risk of color loss due to abrasion. Furthermore, the present process permits the production of polyethylene which is so intensely colored that even very thin foils are still sufficiently colored. Finally, a further advantage of the polyethylene dyed according to the invention should be mentioned that its ash content is significantly lower than that of the starting material.
Example 1: 100g of finely powdered polyethylene, which had been produced by polymerizing ethylene using triisobutylaluminum and titanium tetrachloride, with a viscometrically determined molecular weight of 350,000, was heated to 1000 C for 90 minutes with 500 cm3 of 65% nitric acid with thorough stirring. The white powder was then washed with water until the filtrate was completely free of nitrates and dried. The reaction product (95.2 g) has a weakly acidic character; it consumes 7 mg KOH / g for neutralization. The viscometrically determined molecular weight is 106,000.
In the extruder, the product behaves exactly like a polyethylene with a molecular weight of 106,000 produced by means of the above-mentioned catalysts.
For staining, 50 g of the oxidized polyethylene were suspended in 600 cm3 of a solution of 5 g of brilliant white shot B and 6 g of sodium acetate in 20% acetic acid and the mixture was refluxed for 1 hour. After cooling, the deep red colored polyethylene powder was separated off and washed with water and alcohol until the filtrate was colorless. The processing into rods, tubes and foils was carried out in a known manner. The objects obtained give the dye neither under the. The effects of hydrochloric acid differ from alkalis.
EXAMPLE 2 100 g of finely powdered polyethylene produced by polymerizing ethylene using diethylaluminum chloride and titanium tetrachloride as a catalyst and having a viscometrically determined molecular weight of 175,000 were subjected to an hourly oxidation with 65 log nitric acid. A sample was then taken from the reaction mass and, after working up according to Example 1, its molecular weight was determined and its ability to be colored was tested. The molecular weight showed a value of 121,000, the product could already be colored well.
The remainder of the reaction mixture was further oxidized for 30 minutes. After working up as described in Example 1, a white powder with a molecular weight of 64,000 and an acid number of 6 mg KOH / g was obtained.
The two oxidized samples with molecular weights of 121,000 and 64,000 were stained with brilliant base shot B in accordance with the procedure given in Example 1. The colored product after an oxidative pretreatment of 90 minutes shows a much deeper color than the colored reaction product after 60 minutes of oxidation.
Example 3: 100 g of low-pressure polyethylene with a molecular weight of 520,000 were according to the im

To create a basis for comparison, polyethylene, which had not been subjected to any oxidative pretreatment, was also colored with brilliant base shot B. The result was ... a product with a very faint red shade to which the number 1 was assigned. The table below shows how many times stronger the color of the oxidatively pretreated and then colored polyethylene samples is than the color of the colored, non-oxidized polyethylene.

Example 5: Oxidized polyethylene with the molecular weight of 106,000, which according to Example 1 from.
Polyethylene with a molecular weight of 350,000 was produced by treatment with 65 loger nitric acid, was used for the following tests:
5 g of the product mentioned were mixed with 5 g of non-oxidized polyethylene with almost the same molecular weight (102,000) and colored with brilliant base shot B according to the instructions given in Example 1. The red colored product obtained was compared with a sample of the above-described unmixed polyethylene with a molecular weight of 106,000, which had also been colored with brilliant base shot B, and, as expected, showed only about half the depth of color of the colored unmixed comparative product.
Furthermore, a larger amount of the above-described polyethylene became with the molecular weight
106,000 colored with brilliant base shot B and then intimately mixed with the same amount of non-oxidized polyethylene with a molecular weight of 102,000. After processing, the powder obtained provides objects in which the dye is completely evenly distributed.
Example 6: Low-pressure polyethylene with a molecular weight of 175,000 was treated as described in Example 2 for 90 minutes with the above nitric acid. After working up, an oxidized polyethylene with a molecular weight of 64,000 was obtained.
Various samples of this oxidized polyethylene were intimately mixed with varying amounts of a non-oxidized polyethylene with a molecular weight of 106,000 and stained with base green HB. The samples of green-colored polyethylene obtained show less depth of color as the content of non-oxidized polyethylene increases. Depending on the ratio of the components, they have a more or less wide softening range and are accordingly very suitable for further processing.
The same result could be achieved if the oxidized polyethylene with the molecular weight of 64,000 was first colored with base green HB and then samples of it with alternating colors. Quantities of a non-oxidized polyethylene with a molecular weight of 106,000 were mixed.
