Sintered material for grinding tools such as grinding wheels, dressing tools or the like.

So far, the main materials used for grinding wheels have been powdered silicon carbide (carborundum) or powdered, molten aluminum oxide (corundum), which are bound with metallic or non-metallic binders. Such abrasive materials have a high hardness, but they often have the particular disadvantage that they are extremely brittle and have a tendency to splinter, as a result of which they break out of the shape quickly and thus cause very high wear.

The deficiencies that have occurred so far are eliminated by the invention. It has a sintered material for grinding tools of all kinds, such as grinding wheels, dressing tools or the like, consisting of 50-97% boron carbide and one or more high-melting metal or metalloid oxides, such as aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, boron oxide, magnesium oxide, zirconium oxide, Titanium oxide, mullite and sillimanite, which is preferably crushed to a grain size of 0-01 to 3 mm and is embedded in a sintered carrier material made of hard metal, metal alloys, iron, oxide ceramics, synthetic resin or the like. The grinding tools can be produced directly as molded bodies from the high-boron carbide sintered material. However, it has proven to be particularly useful to use the material as an abrasive grain.

For this purpose, a sintered material of the type indicated above, e.g. B. in the composition 90% boron carbide and 10% mullite, powdered after sintering and brought to a suitable grain size, which is about 0-01 to 3 mm. The granular material is embedded in any carrier mass. Such carriers are already known per se. These are hard metal, metal alloys, iron, synthetic resin or oxide ceramics, such as porcelain-like substances or the like.
