Process for the production of diamond abrasives.
For cementing abrasive material such as
Emery, carborundum, glass, sand, etc. Like. For the purpose of producing grinding and polishing tools, it is known that the electrolytic process produces metal deposits between the individual grains of the grinding material, which bond the former to one another and at the same time connect them to the cathode.
For this purpose, according to a special embodiment of the method, the cathode is covered with the grained abrasive material during the electrolytic process on those surfaces from which the precipitate is to originate, after the latter has previously been made conductive by shaking with fine graphite powder or similar material.
According to this method, only relatively flat surfaces on the upper side, i.e. only where the abrasive remains by itself, can be provided with it. In order to cover a body with the abrasive on all sides, it has been proposed to embed it completely in the abrasive, which is contained in a porous container and which allows the electrodeposition to be formed.
Apart from the fact that inadmissibly large quantities of the expensive diamond powder would be required for the production of diamond abrasive bodies, making the surfaces of the grinding jig grains conductive with graphite or the like causes the galvanic deposit to also form on the upper side of the grains, which therefore completely envelops them therefore no cutting edges and corners protrude from the surface.
The method according to the invention avoids the formation of deposits in that the abrasive grains are left or made electrically non-conductive and consists essentially in that the diamond grains are attached to the base body with a suitable adhesive (synthetic resin, shellac, etc.) and then on the metallic conductive
Abrasive body the galvanic deposit is formed.
The method according to the invention is carried out, for example, in such a way that the diamond grains are attached to a metallic core (grinding body) by means of a suitable adhesive. As a suitable adhesive z. B. shellac, synthetic resin or the like. That only softens at elevated temperature and with which the diamond grains are coated in a very dilute solution and dried. The carefully degreased grinding wheel is moistened with a very dilute glycerine solution or the like and dipped into the diamond powder so that it sticks in a thin layer. The grains are then attached by moderate heating and the abrasive is then brought into the galvanic bath, which is made of chromium, nickel, iron-cobalt or. Like. Salts or mixtures of these salts.
The galvanic deposit grows from the bottom of the grinding wheel and embeds the diamond grains without covering them at the top or completely enveloping them.
If the granules are deeply embedded, new layers can be added in the same way, if desired. The process can be repeated as often as required.
