<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

whereas the other longer bimetal spring, lying on top of the former, is screwed, riveted or rotatably fastened around a hinge joint or the like with its one end to the other end of the metal rod, the free end of the first lower bimetal spring being close to the pivot point of the The second upper bimetal spring acts below the latter, as can be seen from FIG. 2, whereby the expansion paths of both bimetal springs are multiplied.
In addition to the stroke of the free end of the lower bimetal spring, the stroke of the free end of the upper bimetal spring is added, multiplied by the transmission ratio, which
EMI2.1
Bi-metal spring is located. In this way, by connecting any number of bimetal springs in series, very large expansion strokes can be achieved without the use of special translation mechanisms.
In the event that the switching mechanism is housed in its own connector instead of in the rear handle support of an iron, the temperature-sensitive element 44 can also be arranged on the outside of the connector, which is then connected to the base plate 24 by a heat-sensing plate made of a metal with good thermal conductivity is connected.
As the temperature rises, the free end of the two-metal spring 44 transfers its stroke with the aid of a freely movable vertical push rod 45 protruding from the upper part 57 to a contact mechanism consisting of two angle levers 46, 55 and 49, 51, which are isolated on the bracket 41 and between which by a Contact 47 the circuit of the excitation coil 40 is opened and closed, with a screw spindle 52 mounted in the handle 38, 41 acting on the lever arm 51, through which the dead path 56 between the rod 45 and the lever 46 and thus also the switch-off temperature dependent thereon are set can. The threaded pin of the spindle 52 is screwed into a threaded hole of a bracket 50 attached to the rear handle support 41, on which the angle lever 49, 51 is also rotatably mounted about a vertical axis.
The lever arm 51 is pressed against the end of the regulating spindle 52 by a spring, which is not shown in the figures for the sake of clarity, and the lever 55 or the contact 47 is pressed against the lever arm 49 by a spring 48.
For the most comfortable operation possible with the thumb and forefinger of the right hand, which holds the handle 38 of the iron, the spindle 52 at the front end of the handle 38 has a regulating button 53 with a temperature scale on the circumference, which is operated by a snap spring or the like the respective position is held. A protective cover 54, which extends down to the upper part 57, is placed over the live parts 45, 46, 55, 47, 48, 49 of the switching mechanism attached to the outside of the bracket 41, giving the handle a smooth, very pleasing appearance on all sides. A toggle switch or the like can also be installed in the protective hood 54 in order to be able to quickly switch off the iron from the mains independently of the regulating button 53.
The power supply 59 can be provided either above or on the side of the rear handle or in the protective hood 54. his.
Since the excitation current of the coil 40 is very weak, it can also be switched off at the given moment by a contact attached to the bimetal spring itself, in which case
EMI2.2
see it curves convexly downwards as the temperature rises. A specific switch-off temperature is then set in this case by changing the bias of the bimetal spring with the aid of a vertical push rod, held up by a compression spring and isolated on the outside of the rear bracket 41, which is attached either directly to the contact of the bimetal spring or on a one-armed intermediate lever with a large transmission ratio in contact with the latter acts,
The regulating spindle 52 screwed into the upper end of the bracket 41 transmits its path to this push rod through an angle lever attached above the push rod, whereby the preload of the bimetal spring and thus also the switch-off temperature can be set as desired using the regulating button 53.
In a departure from this, the regulating spindle 52 can also be attached vertically to the rear handle support instead of the above-mentioned push rod and act directly on the free end of the bimetal spring or on the above-mentioned intermediate contact spring, in which case the contact push rod and the angle lever and the regulating button 53 are omitted is arranged at the rear end of the handle and is operated from above. With small switching capacities and especially with alternating current, the contact mechanisms described above can also serve to switch off the full heating current without using a mercury interrupter.
The mercury interrupter with the excitation coil can either be arranged in a plug or, as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, in the rear handle support of an iron, in the second case the safety mechanism for switching off the excitation current either also in the rear handle support, omitting it of the plug or also in the plug, which is then electrically conductively connected to the corresponding parts of the mercury retaining tube in the handle support by special contact pins, contact springs or the like. Since the switching mechanism remains the same in principle, whether it is in the rear handle rest of an iron or in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is arranged with its own connector, it is described on the basis of the first case shown by FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 and applies mutatis mutandis to the second case.
