Bell made of fireproof material to seal off the air at the welding point during arc welding.
Processes for electric arc welding, in which the parts to be welded are heated by electric current with more or less complete exclusion of air to melt heat, are known. With the methods proposed so far, however, a number of disadvantages have arisen which have made perfect welds difficult or impossible. Particularly when welding thin metal sheets, the amount of heat absorbed by the material is so small that it is quickly dissipated from the area around the welding point. As a result, the crystallization processes of the metal necessary for a homogeneous structure do not have sufficient time to develop, so that the acceleration of the heating and solidification process results in tensions and non-uniform structure formation.
The bell made of refractory material described below eliminates these disadvantages in the following way: In FIGS. 1 and 2, which indicate the ground plan and elevation of such a bell, for example, a and b denote the two parts to be welded, e the movable electrode, which as Carbon welding, welding wire or the like. Can be formed. The bell-like jacket d has the opening e at the top, through which this electrode can be lowered onto the welding point. The intermediate piece / provides the connection with the electrode carrier, so that the bell only participates in its lateral movement regardless of the axial movement of the electrode.
The lower edge of the bell is adapted to the shape of the weld metal in such a way that when the bell slides over the weld metal, it seals the inside from the outside space at all points with the surface g, with the exception of the openings h, which can be made to widen the entrance To enable welding pastes and the exit of the raised weld seam.
The bell has such a shape that, as a result of its lengthening in the direction of the weld seam, as it progresses over it, it brings about an early heating of the weld metal and prevents rapid cooling. Their lateral extent is determined both by the shape of the workpiece and by the inclusion of that workpiece part, the co-heating of which is useful for controlling the heat dissipation or supply.
This shape allows a good seal, especially in the case of narrow workpieces, and any control of the heat distribution, even before and after the actual welding process.
