Filling element.
The invention relates to filling elements, i.e. H. to elements that are initially de-energized and are only put into operation by pouring in water or another liquid. So far there have essentially been two embodiments for such filling elements. One is used as the carrier of the electrolyte, i. H. as a means of preventing the electrolyte from leaking, an absorbent material, e.g. B. cellulose wadding, sawdust and. Like., used. A disadvantage of such filling elements is that the liquid capacity is very low and the presence of the solid electrolyte carrier, which is partially deposited on the zinc electrode, promotes corrosion phenomena on the zinc.
In other known filling elements, a swelling substance, e.g. B. tragacanth used. With these elements it is difficult to achieve a uniform swelling of the swelling material present in the form of a cylinder. It has been shown that in many cases the swollen substance allows the liquid to pass through to the not yet swollen part of the electrolyte carrier

resistance of the thickened electrolyte results.
The invention eliminates the above drawbacks in that a swellable substance serves as the electrolyte carrier, but that between the outer electrode (zinc beeher) and the depolarizer apart from this swelling substance that absorbs the liquid, a wick-like structure, e.g. B. made of cellulose wadding is provided. This wick-like structure leads through its absorbency to the swelling substance the liquid poured into the element, eg. B. water, so it acts as a liquid distributor, while the element nevertheless has the advantages of the swelling substance, which changes into colloidal form, as the actual electrolyte carrier. The measure according to the invention therefore ensures that the entire swelling substance contained in the element is broken down and becomes effective.
The arrangement can be made according to the invention so that the wick-like structure attached as a cover on the depolarizer, for. B. is wrapped around this. The structure can also be arranged in the form of individual strips of material, and instead of being provided directly on the depolarizer within the swellable substance.
In the figures, some embodiments of the invention are shown for example, u. between shows

intended. As a carrier of the electrolyte is located in the space between the depolarizer 2 and the zinc cup 1, a swelling substance 5, z. B. tragacanth, or a cold swellable starch. Between the swelling substance 5 and the depolarizer 2, a layer 6 is provided on the depolarizer 2 in the exemplary embodiment, which z. B. can consist of cellulose wadding and acts like a wick.
In the right half of the figure, the layer 6 extends only to the upper edge of the depolarizer, while in the left half of the figure, an example embodiment is shown in which the

Layer with its part 7 also covers the swellable substance 5 from above. The element is to be closed in the usual way by a cardboard disc 8, in which there is an opening, not shown, through which the liquid, for. B. water, can be poured into the cavity.
The mode of operation of the element is such that the poured-in liquid is absorbed by the can-like structure 6, 7 and brought up to the entire height of the element to the swelling substance 5 so that all of the swelling substance is broken down.
2 and 3 show another embodiment of the invention, wherein the wick-like structure 10 is provided within the swellable substance 5, u. or in the form of individual wick-like strips of material. In this embodiment too, the wick-like structure ends in the right half of FIG. 2 at the upper edge of the depolarizer 2, while in the left half of FIG. li with part 11 completely covers the swelling substance 5. The mode of operation is the same as that described for FIG.
In the context of the invention, a wide variety of options for the design and arrangement of the absorbent structure are available, for. B. the absorbent structure can have the form of a string and be arranged in individual longitudinal threads on the circumference of the depolarization body or it can also be wrapped in a spiral around this. The invention also relates to any other form of elements.
