Shotgun shell.
It has already been proposed to manufacture the shells of red bullet cartridges from materials such as celluloid cellulose acetate mixtures, synthetic resin, casein or the like, but shot cartridges with shells made from these materials have so far not been able to acquire any practical significance. While the substances mentioned are suitable for the production of cups and similar utensils that do not experience any mechanical or thermal stress during use, cartridge cases made of plastic materials have to have very high internal pressures at the moment of the explosion, e.g. B. to
80 kg per cm2, withstand.
The cylindrical part of the sleeve must be so elastic that it can expand until it comes into contact with the wall of the explosion chamber of the barrel and then at least partially resumes its previous shape. The latter is necessary so that the case is safely ejected after the shot. The cylindrical sleeve part must also be able to be provided with a flange in a known manner in order to hold the sleeve contents securely in place. The bottom part of the sleeve connected to the cylindrical part must also, since it is very heavily stressed by the explosion pressure, be elastic on the one hand, but still be so stiff that it can withstand the stress when the firing pin is hit.
According to the invention, these high demands on the material of cartridge cases are met in every respect by a known plastic mass to be processed in the heat, consisting of 45-75 parts by weight of a plasticizing agent and 100 parts by weight of a binding agent, and at most 75 parts by weight of a filler is made and the plasticizers are substances such as triphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, trietyl citrate, tracetin, ethyl phthalate, diamyl tartrate or a mixture thereof, cellulose derivatives such as acetate, ester or ether as a filler and finely ground grain as a filler such as wheat flour or spring white, lamp black or the like., Can be used.
How important it is to adhere to the specified limits, e.g. B. with regard to the proportion of plasticizer, has resulted from numerous tests which have shown that the cartridge cases burst when this proportion is reduced to 42, with otherwise unchanged composition when firing, while with a proportion of 48 have shown this remedy to be perfectly resistant. On the other hand, sleeves were exceeded when the upper limit, z. B. with a proportion of the plasticizer of 80, already too elastic, so that they showed lateral bulges when the cotton plug was pressed in and also proved to be no longer useful from a ballistic point of view.
