these tubes are used in a circuit which consists of two circuits connected in parallel to an alternating current source, which have a common capacitor in the unbranched part and one of which is connected by the series connection of this capacitor. a rectifier valve and a resistor (expediently ohmic resistance) is formed, while the other consists of the series connection of the same capacitor, a choke and the discharge tube or tubes.
In order to achieve the most favorable working conditions, it is necessary that the terminal voltage of the discharge tube is adapted to the ignition and operating voltage at least within certain limits.
This condition is perfectly met in the device according to the invention in that the tube's terminal voltage, which is higher than the voltage of the power source, allows reliable ignition to be achieved under all circumstances, while a suitable operating voltage, which is harmless to the operational safety of the tube, can still be maintained. In addition, practically any desired duration of the dark period that comes into consideration for the present purpose can be achieved through a suitable choice of the various electrical quantities.
The duration of the dark period can also be selected in such a way that, in principle, the use of a screen is unnecessary, without the quality of the image reproduction on the screen being influenced in an impermissible manner.
The invention is based on the object that of each period of a z. B. 50periodigen current a part is to be suppressed. The circuit according to the invention ensures that the current component that is not suppressed is superimposed by a current component of another, mostly lower frequency, whereby the originally z. B. too long dark period is reduced again. By changing the additional frequency, you can easily regulate the size of the dark period.
The invention is explained in more detail, for example, using the figures.
In Fig. 1 the circuit which is used according to the invention in the playback apparatus is shown.
In FIGS. 2 and 3, several voltage and current curves are drawn.
In Fig. 1, the terminals 1 and 2 of the AC voltage source e, which can be formed by the usual city network as well as by a transformer, bridged by two circuits. The. one consists of the series connection of the capacitor a, the rectifier valve G and one. adjustable resistor R. The other circuit is formed by the capacitor C, a choke L and a discharge tube B. The capacitor C is common to both circuits.
The resistor R can also be common to both circuits and is then arranged between points 3 and 'or 5 and 6. The choke L can be replaced by an ohmic resistor. Points 11 and 12 are the branch points.
The circuit works as follows. When terminal 2 is positive, capacitor C

Current in this direction. If the two terminals 1 and 2 mix up their polarity, the discharge tube will have total voltage that is equal to the sum of the capacitor voltage and the mains voltage. It follows from this that discharge tubes with an ignition voltage which is higher than the highest voltage of the alternating current source can be ignited and kept in operation using the circuit according to FIG. 1.
The effect of the circuit according to FIG. 1 is illustrated in greater detail in FIG.
The curve labeled 7 represents the voltage curve of the alternating current source e. When the voltage has reached point 8, which corresponds to the threshold voltage of the rectifier tube G, on curve 1, the rectifier tube G comes into effect, so that the capacitor a is charged. It depends on the size of the resistor R, which limits the charging current, and on the size of the capacitor C, up to which voltage the charging takes place. In the exemplary embodiment, the resistance Rderart is chosen so that the capacitor voltage, which is denoted by 9, comes close to the maximum voltage 10 of the alternating current source. The capacitor retains its charge because the rectifier valve does not allow current to pass in the opposite direction.
When the voltage of the current source has reached its maximum value at 10, it decreases again so that a voltage difference occurs between the two branching points designated 11 and 12 (FIG. 1), which is indicated schematically in FIG. 2 by the hatched part. The discharge tube E with the upstream choke L is connected between points 11 and 12. When the breakdown voltage 18 of the discharge tube z. B. is reached at 13, the lamp lights up, which is indicated schematically by the current curve 14 beginning at point 19. The capacitor is now discharged through the tube, which is indicated by curve 15. At point 16 the voltage difference is zero, which is due to the fact that the potential between points 11 and 12 in the circuit of FIG. 1 is zero at this moment.
The terminal voltage of the discharge tube still has a certain positive value at the same moment because the current in the choke L lags in a known manner with respect to the voltage applied between points 11 and 12 and the self-induction voltage thus generated at the choke lags the current

can entertain for a short time in decreasing strength. This process is repeated regularly.
It can be seen from FIG. 2 that a dark period D occurs, the duration of which can be determined by a suitable choice of the switching elements.
The discharge duration of the capacitor is determined by the inductor L and the capacitor C, so that the duration of the dark period can be regulated by changing these parameters.
If the throttle L is replaced by a resistor, the discharge takes place so quickly that light emissions of a very short duration occur, which is important for recording purposes. In addition to the choke, an ohmic resistance can also be included in the current branch of the tube E.
Although it is possible to regulate the charging of the capacitor and thus the dark period by changing the size of the resistor R within certain limits, the regulation of the dark periods is preferably carried out by a specific choice of the size of the capacitor G and the choke L. It is immediately clear that the shape of the curve 14 depends to a considerable extent on the size of the capacitor and that of the throttle, so that simple and reliable regulation can be achieved in this way. In this case, the size of the alternating voltage can be chosen as favorably as possible with regard to the operation of the tube.
In Fig. 3 it is explained in more detail how the curve 14 of the current flowing through the discharge tube E as the sum of the feeding alternating current 22 (stationary current) and a z. B. also occurring during switch-on processes and mainly determined by the sizes of the capacitor C and the inductor L current 23 (compensation current) can be understood. The curves already indicated in FIG. 2 are indicated in FIG. 3 with the same reference symbols. The time of ignition is indicated at 19, so that at this moment the current through the tube and thus the light emission begins. The steady-state current 22 is shifted in phase with respect to the voltage curve 7. The sum of the two currents 22 and 23 is zero at the beginning of the discharge.
The electricity

the composite current curve 14 and consequently the duration of the dark period can be changed. As already mentioned, the voltage difference between terminals 11 and 12 at point 16 (20) is zero. However, due to the action of the throttle, the current through the tube runs approximately in accordance with the tangent indicated by 24 up to point 17 and not to end point 21 of the cumulative curve 14. Between 20 and 17, curve 24 is therefore not exactly the sum of curves 22 It should also be mentioned here that in the last time period considered the rectifier valve between the points marked 19 and 20 (Figs. 2 and 3) is ineffective, so that the parallel connection of the rectifier valve during discharge does not have any significant influence on this .
If, however, the rectifier valve then comes into operation again, the sum of the steady-state and equalizing currents is of course equal to the tube current plus the valve current.
