and finally reaches about 500 at the point where the hot gases and vapors enter. The oxidizing liquid in the mixing vessel always contains only about 0.5% peracetic acid, the solution flowing in from the tower only about half as much. The exhaust gases exit through a throttle device that regulates the working pressure. The acetic acid produced essentially only contains acetic acid; after its removal, about 90 parts by weight of almost anhydrous acetic acid are obtained every hour, which corresponds to a yield of about 99% of theory. Th. Corresponds.

The acetaldehyde still present in the exhaust gases can be recovered in any manner known per se.

The use of catalysts is absolutely unnecessary in the present process; however, it can also be carried out in the presence of the catalysts known for this reaction, but the effect achieved thereby is relatively small. Comparative tests have shown that the process features according to the invention already achieve such a high rate of oxidation or output that it is possible to dispense with the slight increase in output brought about by catalysts. This has the advantage over known processes that no separation of the acetic acid from the catalyst is necessary. As a result, the acetic acid is obtained immediately in an extremely pure form, so that it can be used for a great many technical purposes without further purification.

Since the acetaldehyde is used almost anhydrous, the final concentration of acetic acid depends only on the degree of moisture of the oxygen-containing gas mixture used, e.g. B. the air, so that you can get an almost anhydrous acetic acid by pre-drying the air.

PATENT CLAIM: Process for the uninterrupted production of acetic acid by oxidation of acetaldehyde in acetic acid solution by means of oxygen or gas mixtures containing such in a stirred vessel. The amount of acetic acid solution kept in circulation by the stirred vessel and a system of towers is a multiple of the amount of acetic acid produced, characterized in that the amount of oxygen supplied is such that it is at most 80% of the amount of oxygen required to convert the total acetaldehyde in acetic acid would be required.
