Hochspammngsstromriehtgeiäss with a grid surrounding the glow cathode and a das
Lattice-enveloping globe-shaped anode.
The invention relates to a grid-controlled discharge vessel with a gas or vapor filling and a hot cathode and goes to designing this in such a way that it can be used in high-voltage systems, in particular for rectifying alternating current.
According to the invention, the control grid is designed as a cap that surrounds the entire cathode or the cathode structure, and the anode as a bell that at least partially envelops this cap and extends above the cathode.
This arrangement has the advantage that the entire discharge path is shielded and is thus no longer subject to disruptive external influences. Furthermore, with the tube designed according to the invention it can easily be achieved that the discharge space between grid and anode is kept relatively small, so that the deionization of the discharge path between grid and cathode can take place very quickly. The discharge vessel is extremely safe from backfire and can therefore withstand very high blocking voltages (30 and more worlds).
An embodiment of a rectifier tube according to the invention is shown in the drawing. In FIG. 1, 1 denotes the glass vessel on whose glass base (pinch base) 2 the cathode 4 with the heat protection cylinder 5 and also the control grid 6 are arranged. These electrodes are connected to the flexible power supply 7, 7, which lead to connector pins in the base of the vessel.
The cathode 4 is indirectly heated and consists of a metal cylinder which is coated inside or inside and outside with an alkaline earth oxide, in particular barium oxide. The heating element 8 is located in the central axis of the cathode. It consists of a metal cylinder with an internal heating coil 9. To enlarge the emitting area, the inside of the cathode can be provided with longitudinal ribs extending radially from the heating element to the outer wall. The ribs are expediently connected to the cathode in a manner that conducts heat well both on the radiator and on the outer wall. In special cases, however, it is advantageous to fasten the ribs only to the outer wall, so that the emitting surfaces are only heated by radiation from the radiator.
For lower powers, it is advisable to design the cathode not as a hollow cathode, but rather, as shown in FIG. 2, as a directly heated cathode in the form of individual wire coils 10 arranged parallel to one another. The coils are preferably made of tungsten wire around which a second thin wire, preferably made of nickel, is wound. The nickel wire serves as a carrier for the oxide, which is applied to the wire either before it is wrapped or only afterwards. Depending on the required heating power and the existing heating voltage, the individual coils can either be connected in series or in parallel or partly in parallel and partly in series. Furthermore, they are expediently surrounded by a heat protection cylinder 11, which is closed at the upper end by a cover 12.
The cover 12 or the cylinder 11 are provided with holes for the discharge to pass through.
Due to the crowded arrangement of the coils, they radiate heat to each other and heat up largely evenly. As a result, the entire cathode acts like a hollow cathode, but has the advantage over this that the heating-up time is due to the direct heating

supplies currents of 40 and far more amperes even at high voltages.
The control grid 6 (Fig. 1) preferably consists of a perforated, carbonized nickel sheet. A cap 13 with a smaller diameter than that of the cylinder 6 is placed on the end of the nickel cylinder. This part 13, which is most subject to the heating by the discharge and the electron or ion bombardment, consists of a material that does not become emissive even at high temperatures, such as graphite, and has holes 14 for the discharge to pass through. The ignition characteristics and the penetration of the tube are determined by the number and size of the holes.
The anode 15 is arranged at the end opposite the cathode foot. The anode neck 3 is made very short, and the bell-shaped anode itself protrudes as far as possible into the bulged part of the tube. The distance from the glass wall should be as great as possible. The course of the outer boundary of the anode is largely adapted to the lines of the tube wall. In this way, field concentrations at individual points between the anode and the wall and thereby the risk of flashback are largely avoided.
The distance between the part 13 of the control grid and the anode is kept as small as possible.
As a result, the deionization of the discharge path is very much favored because of the relatively small number of ions located in this only small space and the risk of a back discharge forming in the blocking half-wave is thereby eliminated. In the interior, too, the bell-shaped anode is designed and adapted to the control grid, which is also rounded at its edges, in such a way that the electrical field between the grid and anode is largely homogeneous.
In order to eliminate the risk of condensation of the vapor-supplying material (mercury vapor) in the anode neck 3, this is provided with a transverse wall 1'1 closing the upper end of the anode neck. This transverse wall is the actual support for the anode, which is melted down at 16.
Towards the inside of the vessel, the anode bolt is surrounded by a glass tube 18 in order to prevent the discharge from starting. The metallic anode cap 19, which is used to supply power, is placed on the upper end of the anode neck.
The vessel can be filled with noble gas or metal vapor, in particular mercury vapor.
Mixtures of these gases or vapors are also useful in many cases. When metal vapor is used, the vapor-releasing body 20 is expediently located in the lower part of the tube surrounded by the vessel base 21. The nozzle 22, which is melted off after the pump has been pumped out, is used for venting.
