Device with one or more electric discharge tubes with DampMiiUun.
The invention relates to a device with one or more electrical discharge tubes with a vapor filling. the tubes usually being operated in series with a series impedance. A certain vapor pressure develops in these tubes during operation.
The size of this vapor pressure depends on various properties of the tubes, e.g. B. on the intensity of the light emitted by them, of great influence.
It has been shown that the vapor pressure depends to a large extent on the temperature of the surroundings. in which the tubes are arranged. can be influenced. When the heat development in the tubes is regulated in this way by suitable adjustment of the current intensity. that at a certain temperature of the environment the steam receives a favorable pressure, so when the ambient temperature drops the steam pressure can decrease in such a way that the discharge tubes no longer meet the requirements placed on them. So z. B. the vapor pressure can be so low. that the intensity of the emitted light is only a small part of the normal value. An increase in the ambient temperature can also have an undesirable effect on the vapor pressure.
According to the invention, an improvement is created in that by means of a control element. which depends on the ambient temperature. When the temperature drops, the voltage of the current source from which the discharge tubes are fed increases or a variable impedance connected in series with the discharge tubes decreases. on the other hand, if the ambient temperature rises, the voltage mentioned is reduced or the impedance mentioned is increased.
As a result, with a decrease in the ambient temperature, a stronger current is passed through the discharge tubes, so that the increase in the heat output of the tubes brought about by the drop in the ambient temperature is fully or partially compensated. Likewise, the current strength will decrease with a decrease in the ambient temperature. The aforementioned measures have the advantage that the vapor pressure in the discharge tubes is completely independent or at least less dependent on the temperature of the surroundings.
In the drawing, two exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown schematically.
The device according to FIG. 1 contains a number of electrical discharge tubes 7 which, in addition to a quantity of noble gas, e.g. B. neon, contain a lot of vaporizable metal, the vapor of which participates in the light emission of the discharge tubes. This metal vapor can, for. B. consist of sodium vapor.

This transformer contains a core 7 on which the primary winding S is attached in addition to the coil 6. This primary coil has a fixed position, while, on the other hand, the secondary coil 6 can be adjusted in the vertical direction and is suspended from the balance 9 provided with the counterweight 10. The arch 11 of this balance is designed such that the lever arm of the counterweight 10 has different lengths in different positions of the balance. This shape of the arch 11 is such

and the attractive force between the coils 6 and 8 is in balance.
The position of the balance is determined by the control element 12, which is dependent on the temperature of the environment and z. B. consists of a metal rod with a relatively large coefficient of thermal expansion. The rod 12 is above the lever. M connected to the scale 9.
When the ambient temperature drops, the regulating element 12 will make the scales rotate somewhat in the clockwise direction. so that the distance between the coils 6 and 8 becomes smaller. As a result, the primary stray field of the transformer becomes smaller and a higher voltage is induced in the secondary coil 6. This higher voltage causes an increase in the current through the discharge tubes and consequently also an increase in the development of heat in these tubes. The device can be adjusted in such a way that this increased heat development results in increased heat dissipation

Instead of a metal regulating element, one could also use a column of liquid and use the change in volume of the liquid that occurs when the temperature changes to actuate the balance 9. The use of liquids has the advantage that a substance can easily be selected. which has a considerably larger coefficient of expansion than metals.
The device according to FIG. 2 is fed from the direct current source 14 and contains a number of discharge tubes 15 which are provided with a metal vapor filling. A series resistor 16 is connected in series with these discharge tubes. Various points 17 are branched off from this resistor and connected to contacts 18, which two and two can be connected to one another by the organs 19. whereby the parts20. 21 and 22 of the resistor 16 are short-circuited. The organs 19 can be lifted by means of the magnetic coils 23. whereby the short circuit of the
