From about 900 C the contact tissue is cooled in a known manner by a liquid layer of water or nitric acid over it.
Although the backfire or the risk of explosion is reduced to a minimum by the measure described, it is advisable, however, to mix the gas mixture with a number of very narrow gases. To allow outlet openings to flow into the contact space in order to be able to guarantee the safety of the process under all circumstances, including in the event of any kind of malfunction. This ensures that the gas flow when entering the free gas space in front of the contact zone has a significantly higher speed than when flowing through the contact zone itself. With the very high exit speeds of, for example, over 100 m per second, backfires are completely excluded.
There is also little risk of explosion if the gas flow fails, since the narrow gas outlet openings bring each explosion wave to a standstill.
It has also proven to be useful to change the direction of the gas flow when flowing through the free gas space in front of the contact zone, since this achieves structural advantages and a very even distribution of the gas flow over the entire contact surface. The gas outlet openings are therefore preferably arranged in the form of elongated gaps in such a way that they open into the free gas space in front of the contact zone in a non-axial direction.
In the drawings, devices for the technical implementation of the method described are shown schematically in longitudinal section.
The device according to FIG. 1 consists of two parts provided with flanges, of which the lower part 1 is used as a supply line for the fresh gas, which has been well mixed in any mixing device,
