<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Straw or sheaf ties.

can be achieved than with the facilities used for this in known straw binders. In the known devices, the straw falling into the hopper of the straw binder is pressed against the tiltable trough by means of grippers, which are mounted behind the sliding wall of the hopper and by means of a crankshaft drive through the gripper wall and the straw sliding down on it with a swinging movement of the straw against the tiltable one Press the recess. A number of significant disadvantages are associated with this arrangement. The crankshaft drive requires a large number of bearing points and joints, which has the disadvantage of considerable wear and tear on the bearings and increased power requirements, as well as extensive lubrication and maintenance.
Furthermore, the straw is broken up very strongly by the grab movement, so that a lot of inferior short straw is produced. This is pulled by the grippers through their openings in the sliding wall and, due to its high volume, has to be constantly removed from under the working binder. Another major disadvantage of this known device is that the grippers penetrate the straw bundle to a greater or lesser extent even when the binding needle has already wrapped itself around the straw bundle to be tied. The consequence of this is that, with greater power and more firm pressure, an increased, useless power requirement and a correspondingly stronger dimensioning of the gearbox are required for the gripper to penetrate the held bundle.
Furthermore, the penetration of the gripper into the held bundle keeps it in a continuous wave-like movement during the binding process, so that the binding thread is easily deflected out of its direction and incorrect bindings are caused.
According to the invention, these disadvantages are primarily avoided in that press rammers are provided in front of the sliding wall of the filling funnel, which are moved in a swinging manner along the sliding wall and press the straw against a tiltable trough. Further details of the invention relate to the drive of this device and to arrangements for regulating the strength and size of the bundles of straw to be produced by means of the same.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown; 1 shows an overall arrangement in section along the line 1-1 in FIG. 2, FIG. 2 shows a top view of FIG. 1 and FIGS. 3 and 4 show two side views. On a larger scale, FIG. 5 shows a detail of FIG. 1, FIG. 6 shows the section along line VI-VI of FIG. 5, FIG. 7 shows the section along line VII-VII of FIGS. 6 and 8 and 8a shows a detail of FIG. 6 in front and side views.
FIG. 9 shows a part of FIG. 2 on a larger scale, FIG. 10 shows a particular possible use of the subject matter of the invention, FIG. 11 is the side view of a further exemplary embodiment of the invention, of which details are shown in FIG. 12 in side view, in FIG. 13 are shown in a section along the line YIII-XIII in FIG. 12 and in FIG. 14 in a section along the line XIV-XIV in FIG. 13 on a larger scale; FIGS. 15-19 show the parts shown in FIGS. 11 and 14 in different positions.
The straw sliding over the sliding surface a, a3 of the filling funnel is pressed against the tiltable trough c by means of the press ramper b (FIGS. 1 and 3). For this purpose, the rammers stored in front of the sliding surface are moved along the lower, arched part of the sliding wall with a swinging

rad g is transmitted, which sits loosely on the knotter shaft h and is connected via the pinion i to the drive pulley 7c designed as a belt pulley.
As soon as an amount of straw corresponding to the bundle to be produced is compressed on the tiltable trough c, the straw mass presses the dropout lever in a manner known per se! down, whereby a two-armed lever m connected to the misfire shaft is moved, which during the tamping process keeps a coupling pawl n used to couple the knotter shaft h with the idler wheel g off. The coupling pawl n (Fig. 5 to 8) is mounted between the knotter shaft and idler wheel with a bolt o inserted in a groove of the knotter shaft, which is rounded within the hub of the idler wheel according to the shaft circumference, so that in the disengaged position shown in FIG Idler wheel rotates around the shaft and coupling bolt when empty.
However, as soon as the pawl is released by the lever arm m, a spring p connected to the pawl rotates the coupling pin o so far that it engages in a recess in its hub when the idler wheel rotates, whereby the knotter shaft h is now taken along and via the linkage q (Fig. 4) the oscillation axis of the binding needle r is driven, which in a known manner puts the binding thread around the compressed straw bundle and tied it together with the knotter s sitting on the knotter shaft. After the tying has been completed, the trough c is tilted into the open position from the knotter shaft by means of the rod u (FIG. 4) controlled by the roller and cam disk t, and the finished bundle is thrown off.
The bundle is then transported by hand or, if desired, by means of a conveyor device v (Fig. 10) to be placed in front of the binder with a variable angle of incline and with a conveyor belt that can be extended by inserting chain conveyor links onto a cart or the like or onto a subsequent slide. A stand support on the front of the frame of the binder gives it good stability.
If you want to change the size of the bundle to be pressed, it is only necessary to adjust the point of articulation of the crank arms e, f and thus to give a different dimension to the oscillation stroke of the press ramper b. By regulating the tension of the spring w, which holds the two-armed lever m in engagement with the coupling pawl n, the firmness of the tamped straw bundle can easily be regulated in that, depending on the spring tension set, a greater or lesser pressure must be exerted on the straw so that under Overcoming this spring pressure the misfire lever! and the knotter shaft can be coupled to the drive.
Since the engagement of this coupling device takes place at or shortly before the lowest point of reversal of the tamper movement, if the pawl release and clutch take place at the same time, the tampers move away from the bundle while the needle is moving, and the needle has to absorb the pressure of the rebounding straw as a result . The needles can be relieved of this pressure by allowing release and clutch to occur in chronological order. By appropriately dimensioning this sequence, one is able to relocate the procedure of the needle to a point in time at which the rammers are moving again against the straw and to effect the knotting process while the bundle is still being held pressed by the rammers.
Under the action of the spring p, the pawl n is turned over and thereby the coupling bolt o connected to it, located in a groove in the knotter shaft and eccentrically designed within the hub of the idler wheel, is rotated so far that it engages in a recess in the idler hub (see in particular Fig. 12-19). This recess extends so far around the knotter shaft that the idler wheel initially continues to run loosely despite the coupling position of the bolt o and only after the rammers make a downward movement, the knotter shaft is taken along. In Fig. 15 the position of the various parts is illustrated at the moment in which the rammers throw the misfire lever and bring the pawl into the clutch position.
FIG. 17 shows the position of the tamper at the point in time at which the coupling has just become effective and the movement of the binding needle r has been initiated, while FIG. 19 shows that the bundle is kept pressed together by the tamper at the point in time of the tying process. As can be seen from Fig. 2, a tamper moves immediately next to the breast plate s of the knotter. Furthermore, FIG. 11 shows that the rammers move through a stripping wall M'i, whereby the straw that falls along the sliding wall a and which remains on the rammer when it climbs up is stripped off and caused to fall onto the counter-support.
This ensures that the straw parts of the bundle lying in the immediate area of the binding device are securely pressed downwards and are not able to press the binding thread upwards and deflect it from its position required for cooperation with the knotter. As a result, there is no longer any need for special steering devices on the knotters, as has been suggested to avoid incorrect ties.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 11, the sliding wall a is composed of two mutually adjustable board walls a \ a2, so that one is able to easily adjust the height of the sliding wall upper edge to the different heights of the shaker in threshing machines by shifting the two wall parts to one another .
The drive can be switched on and off in a manner known per se by means of a foldable protective grille x (FIG. 9), a friction clutch y being used as the coupling element through which a gentler one
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Noiseless tightening is achieved and the transmission is protected. The hub of the drive belt pulley k or of the drive pinion i can expediently be designed at the same time as a coupling element, as is the case in the illustrated embodiment.
So that the tamper does not sink due to its own weight when the binder is stopped, a compensating spring z is articulated on the rocking axis d of the tamper (FIG. 4).
The arrangement shown and explained can also be used with binding mowers with the same advantages.
