Cable transmission system.
When planning cable transfer systems, the charging current that occurs plays an important role due to the significantly higher capacity of the cables compared to overhead line systems. The higher the operating voltage and the greater the length of the cable transmission, the more important it is. If no special precautions have been taken, the power station or substation feeding the cable line must also generate the reactive power required to charge the cable, so that the entire charging power is fed to the cable from the beginning.
Fig. 1 schematically illustrates the current distribution along the cable for this simplest case. The vertically hatched rectangle shows the useful current J flowing over the entire length of the cable, which is assumed to be completely uniform, while the oblique hatched triangle denotes the charging current Je, which is zero at the end of the cable and increases steadily to one after the beginning Size that is approximately determined by the total capacity of the cable.
It is known that these two currents are shifted by almost 90 relative to one another and add up geometrically to the total current of the cable. Opposite the charging current in phase is the compensation current Jl, which is generated by the machines and transformers of the power or Substation or by the consumer or by a choke coil D specially provided for this purpose

at the end or at an intermediate point, e.g. B. in the middle.
The figure shows that the charging current Je in the present case has a very considerable size compared to the useful current J and that therefore the total current will considerably exceed the useful current despite the geometric composition of both components. This can result in the usable cable cross-section at the beginning of the route being subjected to higher loads than is permissible, so that the system cannot be implemented in this simple form. Conversely, if the compensating choke coil is at the end of the line, this is where the greatest load is.
The ratios are made much more favorable if you do not make the compensation in only one point (beginning, end or in between), but rather distribute it over two points, e.g. B. beginning and end (Fig. 2), or beginning and at a distance of 2/3 l from the beginning. The case shown in FIG. 2 will be the one that usually occurs. insofar as a certain lagging current is caused by the connected consumers anyway, which is suitable for partially compensating for the charging current of the cable, while the rest of the power or. Substation must be included.
For the sake of simplicity, it is assumed in the figure that it is not the consumer devices or the machines or transformers of the power station or substation that perform the compensation, but rather a special inductor at the beginning and end of approximately half the power as in the first case. The benefit brought about by this circuit is that the charging current occurring at both ends is approximately half that determined earlier and that the cross-sectional utilization of the cable is made more favorable.
Even if this arrangement should not be sufficient for the case in hand, the level of the maximum charging or compensation current can be reduced to any desired value by additional choke coils, which are switched on in the course of the line. In Fig. 3, the case is assumed that in the middle of the cable line a compensation station is in front.

remaining two quarters at the beginning and at the end. It cannot be denied that the load conditions of the cable are made more favorable by this measure, but that the costs of the entire system increase considerably due to the intermediate station.
According to the invention, the number of these stations is therefore reduced in that the parts of the cable section adjacent to the stations, i.e. the receiving points of the compensation current, are designed so that they can withstand a greater current-carrying capacity than the rest of the cable section.

all the more so as the length of the end stretches to be carried out differently is generally less as a result of the actual course of the load curve than was shown in FIG. This makes it possible to improve the economy of the entire transmission system.
