Process for refining welded joints of corrosion-resistant austenitic
Chromium-nickel steels.
The processing of the austenitic, corrosion-resistant chromium-nickel steels requires the use of fusion welding, especially in the production of sheet metal objects such as pipes, acid tanks etc., whereby the welding wire must of course be the same alloy as that of the material to be welded.
As is well known, the austenitic state of the corrosion-resistant chrome-nickel steel used today is achieved through a special heat treatment. However, the welding point, even if it was made with welding wire of the same alloy, never has the homogeneous structure of the base material even after the heat treatment has been carried out, which is understandable since the weld, as solidifying from the melt flow, has a more or less pronounced cast structure.
Especially the transition points between the weld seam and the base material, that is to say the neighboring zones of the weld seam, suffer such changes under the influence of the welding heat; the metal oxides and other impurities that form on the weld bead penetrate the adjoining zones of the workpiece and remain intercrystalline there. d. H. at the polyhedron borders, embedded as a foreign body
These foreign bodies are naturally not to be removed or rendered harmless by any heat treatment. The consequence of this is. that they cause the intergranular corrosion to a greater extent, especially at these transition points. Under this influence, a Entfestiguns occurs on the crystal or. Polyhedral boundaries, which ultimately lead to cracking (crack formation) at such places and thereby endanger the tightness of the workpieces.
The present invention aims to make these intergranular corrosion attacks impossible from the outset by preventing the acids or other corrosive agents from accessing these areas which are contaminated by the sweat and whose corrosion resistance is severely weakened. This is done by covering the welding point and its neighboring zones with a material that is also corrosion-resistant and adapted to the corrosive agent (e.g.
