Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Device for the electrolytic extraction of light metals, in particular of
Magnesium and calcium.
The present invention relates to the electrowinning of light metals, such as magnesium and calcium, using a molten electrolyte consisting of a salt which, in the molten state, is heavier than the recovered metal at the working temperature, and relates to an apparatus for carrying out the same Procedure. In the latter, a protective layer of a light salt or a salt mixture is placed over the bath, under which the electrolytically deposited metal collects. So the metal is sealed off from the outside air by the liquid layer of light salts. Such an arrangement can be made that the deposited metal at least partially forms the effective surface of the cathode.
The cathode is shaped so that the recovered metal can collect within an enclosure. The latter can either be metallic itself or the metallic cathode can be arranged within the enclosure. According to the present invention, the cathode consists of a conductive material that is wettable by the metal to be extracted, such as. B. chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, vanadium, titanium, silicon or alloys of these substances, or the cathode is coated with one of these substances or an alloy of several of them.
Another part of the present invention relates to the design of the part of the cathode on which the recovered metal is initially deposited as a horizontally arranged metallic plate.
This embodiment of the cathode is shown in the drawing. It means g 'the electrolytic bath in the container a', which at the working temperature has a higher specific weight than the metal to be deposited, and e 'the layer of the extracted metal floating on the electrolyte, such as magnesium or the like. The light protective layer with / ', the perforated horizontally arranged metallic plate, on which the metal is deposited at the beginning of the electrolysis, denoted by d'.
The fact that the cathodes consist entirely or only on their surface of the substances specified above, the advantage is achieved that on the surface of the cathode one with the lower

precipitates, whereupon the layer of this metal itself serves as a cathode.
The cathode compartment is advantageously surrounded by a ring made of refractory material c ', but in its place a ring made of solid chloride cooled by means of a coiled pipe can also be used.
