can continue working by enlarging the harmful space of the compressor in a manner known per se by adding one or more expansion spaces. Usually the starting air compressor is assembled into a unit with the auxiliary engine, so that the compressor is driven into inseparable connection with the auxiliary engine, either by a separate crank of the main crankshaft of the auxiliary machine or in some other suitable manner.
This ensures that the crank throws, connecting rods) pistons and the like Like. The compressor to the entire system of moving machine parts belong, sometimes an air stream flows uninterrupted through the compressor. In the periods when the harmful space is enlarged by adding expansion spaces, a very small air flow must go through the compressor, so that an overpressure high enough for the constant operation of the valves can be ensured in the various stages, so that the piston rings and valves from 0 accumulations of lubricating oil, which can cause oil coking or deposits of pitch on the valves or piston rings, are kept free.
Such precipitation increases the risk of explosion on the one hand and on the other hand prevents the compressor from running afterwards
EMI2.2
uneconomical to operate, as it only consumes a negligible amount of work in the periods when only a very small flow of air flows through the compressor.
It is known to use internal combustion engine systems with auxiliary internal combustion engines for the purpose of propulsion of the ship, the air compressor to fill up the starter ventilator constantly in
Maintain operation; But here it concerns systems in which the main and auxiliary combustion engines work with compressed air injection of the fuel, thus systems in which the uninterrupted
Operation of the compressor is a necessary measure. In these systems, either the compressor is dimensioned so that it can supply the starting air in addition to the injection air, or special compressors are provided for these two purposes, which require special drives or coupling devices.
In contrast, in the device according to the invention, both the main and the auxiliary machine are formed by internal combustion engines with pressure atomization without air injection, that is to say by machines that do not require a compressor for their normal operation, as is the case with e.g. B. is the case with the compressorless diesel engines.
If the compressor is of a multi-stage design, expansion spaces can be used in each of the individual compressor stages, and the arrangement can be such that the connection of all the compressor cylinders with their associated expansion spaces is opened simultaneously when the compressor is to be operated with reduced output. In a multi-stage compressor, the arrangement is made according to the invention such that only the low-pressure cylinder with a
Expansion space is provided.
Such a compressor is operated in such a way that the starting air tank is shut off when it is inflated, a blow-off valve is opened at the same time and the expansion space of the compressor cylinder is switched on so that the compressor continues to work and a small air flow flows through it Niederdruekzyunder only draws in an amount of air that corresponds to a low suction pressure in the high-pressure cylinder. This ensures that the compressor only works under a pressure that is high enough to overcome the valve and line resistances and to drive a very small air flow through the compressor.
In a compressor like the one specified, such a connection between the shut-off valve of the air tank, the valve leading to the expansion space and the blow-off valve is usually switched on that the opening of the
The connection from the low-pressure cylinder to the expansion chamber simultaneously shuts off the starting air tank and opens the blow-off valve. In and of itself, it is not necessary to install a special expansion space on the compressor if the cooling space between the low and high-pressure cylinders is used as the expansion space and a circulation line can be switched on that leads from the low-pressure cylinder space to the cooler around the pressure valves of the low-pressure cylinder and is shut off by a control valve can be.
In the case of a compressor in which the cooler is used as an expansion space, the arrangement can also be made in such a way that, in connection with the pressure valve (s) of the low-pressure cylinder, there are devices by means of which the said valves can be kept open when the compressor is connected to the compressor Performance should work. In this case, the cooler also acts as an expansion space1.
The drawing shows what is necessary to understand the invention. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through an embodiment of a compressor continuously driven by an auxiliary combustion engine, FIG. 2 is the indicator diagram associated with the compressor. 3 shows an embodiment of the compressor, FIG. 4 shows the indicator diagram associated with the compressor shown in FIG. 3, and FIG. 5 shows a second embodiment of the compressor.
"In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 1, the auxiliary machine consists of a three-cylinder, like the main machine with pressure atomization without air injection, its

connected to a dynamo machine c or an electric generator. In addition, the auxiliary machine must drive the continuously operating compressor, which is used to refill the starting air tank p of the main engine system, and the compressor is therefore conveniently arranged so that it is operated directly by a crank on the crank shaft of the auxiliary machine. The compressor is shown in two stages with low pressure cylinder d and high pressure cylinder e.
A graduated piston, which consists of a low-pressure piston f and a high-pressure piston g, works in the cylinders
EMI3.1
The indicator diagram corresponding to the compressor is recorded in FIG. between, for the sake of clarity, as if the compression happened in one stage. The diagram changes depending on whether the compressor is working at full or reduced capacity. The diagram 2, 3, 4 corresponds to the maximum output that the compressor gives with closed valves i, k. The abscissas of the diagram 1, 2 ,. 3, 4 are to be measured from the mouse ordinate axis. If the valves i, Tc are opened,
EMI3.2
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the expansion space h. At the same time, the pipe 0 is cut off from the connection with the pipe o and, for this purpose, brought into connection with the outside air through the control valve u.
The operation of the compressor according to Fig. 3 is as follows: When the compressor is working at full capacity, the valve i is closed, so that the low-pressure cylinder d sucks in its full amount of air with each piston stroke, which after compression in the low-pressure cylinder by the cooler q goes to the high pressure cylinder e, where it is now compressed up to a little above the pressure of the starting air reservoir. Since the valve r rests against its lower seat t at the same time, the air flows directly through the pipe 0, o to the container p; When this is inflated to normal pressure, the manual setting N is set so that valve i is opened and valve r is simultaneously brought to rest against its upper seat s.
As a result, the pipe 0 is connected to the outside air and at the same time the expansion space h is pushed in, so that the low-pressure cylinder sucks in your smaller amount of air, which is compressed during the upward movement of the low-pressure piston f and released through the low-pressure cooler q to the high-pressure cylinder e. Since the pipe 0 is blown off, the high pressure cylinder cannot compress the air any further than to overcome valve and pipe resistance and the like. Like. Is necessary. The relief pressure is regulated by the control valve u.
The diagram in FIG. 4 corresponds to that shown in FIG. When the compressor is working at full capacity, it gives the diagram 1, 2, 3, 4, when working with reduced capacity it gives the diagram 1, 5, 6, 4, which shows that the air is only compressed to a very low pressure and the amount of air drawn in is significantly reduced due to the larger harmful space. Usually
EMI4.1
The embodiment of the compressor shown in FIG. 5 corresponds partially to that shown in FIG. 3, but with the exception that the expansion space towards FIG. 3 is omitted and replaced by the inner space of the low-pressure cooler q. As can be seen from FIG. 5, the low-pressure cylinder d is provided with a circulation line v in which a control valve I is arranged so that the low-pressure cylinder d can be placed in direct connection with the cooler around the pressure valves of the low-pressure cylinder. The cooler q can thus be used as an expansion space in connection with the low-pressure cylinder if the compressor is to work with reduced capacity.
If the circulation line v is shut off by closing valve I, the compressor gives its normal full output.
A compressor according to Fig. 5, in which the cooler q is used as an expansion space for the low-pressure
EMI4.2
so that the cooler q is connected to the low pressure cylinder through the open pressure valves and acts as an expansion space.
In the case of the compressor according to FIG. 5, a valve device like that shown in FIG. 3 can also be used, and a rod between the relief valve r and the valve I, FIG. 5, by which the expansion space is shut off -and articulated connection, which can be connected to the manual setting N, so that the pipeline 0 can be automatically blown off as soon as the expansion space is switched on by opening the valve I.
Since the main basic idea of the invention is that in systems whose internal combustion engines work with pressure atomization without air injection, a continuously operating compressor is used which, in a manner known per se, has devices for enlarging or reducing the harmful spaces of the compressor or only one of these spaces is provided, you usually assemble the compressor with the auxiliary machine driving it to form a unit. In the embodiment of such a unit shown in FIG. the crankshaft of the compressor is in direct extension of the crankshaft of the auxiliary machine, in that the two shafts are made in one piece.
The same is usually also the case when the compressor according to FIG. 1 is replaced by the compressor shown in FIG. 3 or 5. Instead of a continuous crankshaft common to the auxiliary machine and the compressor, two crankshafts that are firmly connected and extend each other can just as well be used, or crankshafts which are arranged in such a way that the crankshaft of the compressor is reversed from that of the auxiliary machine.
