roughened uniformly throughout so that there is probably an increase in friction but no damage to the surface of the rolling stock.
In order for the strip to be constantly gripped and conveyed further by the rollers with the extremely strong decrease in thickness, it is necessary, in addition to the slow speed and the roughening, that the initial thickness of the rolling stock and the roller diameter are in a certain ratio to one another so that the friction generating the friction , lateral forces directed perpendicular to the rolling stock of the normal pressures passing through the roll axis have as large a value as possible; the grip angle a must therefore be chosen to be quite low.
To explain this, FIG. 1 shows a section through a pair of rollers and the rolling stock passing through. A denotes the upper roll, B the lower roll, a the rolling stock, D the roll diameter, oc the grip angle, hl the thickness of the rolling stock before rolling and h2 its thickness after rolling.
With the new method, the angle α must be less than 300. Roll diameter and thickness of the
Rolled stock is to be selected accordingly. The roller diameter is according to the formula
EMI2.1
to calculate. Is z. B. the decrease in thickness 90%, - this results
EMI2.2
With a 90% decrease and a grip angle of 300, the roller diameter must therefore be at least 6.7 times as large as the panel thickness before rolling.
To explain the measures that are taken in the new process to avoid heat losses and thus to maintain the most favorable rolling temperature, the disadvantages of the previous rolling processes in this regard will first be discussed. With the previous rolling processes with the low decreases per pass and with high rolling speeds, it is necessary to send the rolling stock several times through the roll stand. It is therefore not possible to place the heating furnace for the rolling stock directly in front of the rolls, since this space is taken up by a rolling or lifting table. So heat is already lost through the transport from the furnace to the rolling mill.
When rolling itself, the rolling stock gives off large amounts of heat to the rollers, to the rollers of the lifting tables and to the air during the multiple passes through the rollers. so that despite the heat generated by the rolling work, the rolling stock cools down.
In contrast, with the new method, due to the low rolling speed and the fact that the rolling stock only passes through the rollers once, it is possible to place the heating furnace directly in front of the roll stand (Fig. 2) and the rolling plates b directly from the furnace E into the Let rolling mill F enter. The furnace is expediently used as a continuous burst furnace, etc. designed so that the z. B. caused by conveyor rollers G forward movement of the plates in the furnace is equal to the rolling speed.
The furnace can be set up either directly in front of the rollers or at a moderate distance from the rolling mill, in which case (Fig. 3) a fire-resistant channel piece H, protected against heat loss, is installed between the furnace and the rolling mill and adjoining the rollers tightly. Both arrangements also offer the great advantage that the furnace or the furnace and the channel piece can be filled with neutral gases in order to prevent the metal from oxidizing.
The low rolling speed also allows the rolled plates to enter the rolls from a casting mold immediately after casting in the warm state, that is to say without the need for heating in a special furnace (FIG. 4). The rollers K are placed horizontally next to one another, so that they themselves serve as the movable base of the casting mold L and pull the cast plate out of the mold after it has solidified and at the same time perform the greatest possible compression of the material. With this arrangement, pouring and rolling can be done periodically or continuously in such a way that the casting mold is continuously topped up with liquid metal and the rollers - continuously pulling the solidified plate out of the mold and rolling it forward.
Another arrangement is shown in FIG. 5. In this case, a duo rolling mill M with rolls one above the other is used. In front of the rolling mill there is a mold N which can be rotated about pin 0. For casting, the mold is brought into the vertical position and after casting, as soon as the plate has solidified, it is tilted by 900, and the still warm plate is pushed between the rollers by the pusher device P.
According to the invention, a second means of ensuring that the rolling stock remains warm during rolling is that the roll balls are designed in such a way that they extract as little heat as possible from the rolling stock or even supply heat. For this purpose, the rollers are expediently designed as assembled rollers, u. between the roll balls consist of a material that is still hard at the rolling temperature of the rolling stock (e.g. high-speed steel, widiametall, etc.), and they are either placed as a hollow cylinder R (Fig. 6) around a steel axis S and from this through a bad one
