Die Erfindung betrifft einen verbesserten Schutzanstrich für metallene Gussformen, die der Einwirkung des geschmolzenen Metalls ausgesetzt sind. Man hat bereits vorgeschlagen, Metallgussformen mit einer Aufschwemmung von feuerfesten gepulverten Stoffen in einer Natriumsilikatlösung zu versehen, wobei natürlich die Alkalisilikatlösung als Bindemittel wirkt. Indessen hat sich herausgestellt, dass unter den verschiedenen Qualitäten von Natriumsilikat, die als Bindemittel brauchbar sind, es eine solche gibt, welche erhöhte Bindeeigenschaften gegenüber andern Alkalisilikatverbindungen besitzt, wodurch der feuerfeste Überzug der Einwirkung von geschmolzenem Eisen für eine grössere Anzahl von Güssen widersteht, als dies die andern Qualitäten. tun.
Wichtig ist nämlich, dass das Bindemittel eine sehr hohe Temperatur aushält, denn es wurde gefunden, dass die Bindeeigenschaften einer Silikatlösung mit dem Gehalt an Natriumsilikat nicht zunehmen, sondern nur die chemische Zusammensetzung des Natriumsilikat für die Bindeeigenschaften der Wasserglaslösung ausschlaggebend ist. Versuche des Erfinders haben ergeben, dass eine Natriumsilikatlösung, welche etwa der Formel 5 : 11 = 4 (1 : 2) + 1 (1 : 3) =4NasSisOB+NaSigO entspricht und 16-88 Gewichtsprozent Natriumoxyd, 35-80% Kieselsäure und 46'88% Wasser enthält, gegenüber andern Natriumsilikatlösungen eine Ausnahmestellung einnimmt, insofern als die Bindeeigenschaft einer solchen Wasserglaslösung zu Ton oder andern feuerfesten Stoffen erheblich grösser ist.
Dieses Natriumsilikat wird in folgenderweise verwendet : 5 Gewichtsteile hievon werden in 70 Gewichtsteilen Wasser aufgelöst und in diese verdünnte Lösung werden 25 Gewichtsteile von gepulvertem feuerfesten Ton eingerührt. Man erhält so einen dünnen Anstrich, welcher in dünnen Schichten auf die erhitzte Gussform aufgetragen eine grosse Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen flüssiges Eisen hat.
