from a body 1 made of glass or similar material, with which a glass tube 2 is fused airtight.
In the pinch point at the end of this glass tube, power supply wires 8 and 4 for a hot cathode 5 and a power supply wire 6 for an anode 7 are sealed airtight. The hot cathode consists of a linearly suspended helically wound wire, e.g. B. made of nickel, which is coated with a substance that emits electrons to a large extent even at a relatively low temperature, e.g. B. with barium oxide or another alkaline earth metal oxide or with mixtures of these oxides. Good results are achieved with a hot cathode made of nickel, which is alloyed on the surface with at least partially oxidized barium. The anode 7 consists of a cylindrically curved nickel plate surrounding the cathode in an equiaxed manner.
The gas filling consists of an inert gas, preferably

are chosen in such a way that with a continuous arc discharge the mean voltage between the electrodes is lower than the ionization voltage of the gas. In the case of argon, the voltage across the arc is therefore less than 15-3 volts. In an embodiment in which the pressure of the argon is 1 ″ am, while the distance between the electrodes is approximately 5 111 m, the voltage at the arc can be approximately 5 to 10 volts, for example 6 volts Gases or vapors, e.g. mercury vapors, can sometimes be present in the noble gas filling without adverse consequences.
The rectifier according to the drawing can be used, for example, to charge a battery 14. The circuit can then be that indicated in the drawing, in which the voltage of a secondary coil 11 of a transformer with a primary coil 10 is applied between the cathode and the anode. When starting up, a switch-M is closed, whereby the hot cathode is connected to a secondary coil 12. When the hot cathode has reached the required temperature, an arc discharge occurs between it and the anode 7, and the switch 13 can now be opened again. The hot cathode is then kept at the required high temperature under the influence of the arc discharge. A regulating resistor 15 is arranged in series with the battery 14.
The discharge tube according to the invention is particularly suitable for charging small batteries, e.g. B. from 2 to 10 volts and works with much higher efficiency than that for similar purposes
