Abstract
Un método para determinar la presencia y ubicación de una acumulación de hidrocarburo bajo superficie a partir de una muestra de sustancia que se da naturalmente. Se determina una concentración esperada de isotopólogos de una especie de hidrocarburo. Se modela una dependencia de temperatura esperada de isotopólogos presente en la muestra usando cálculos ab initio de alto nivel. Se mide una firma isotópica agrupada de los isotopólogos presentes en la muestra. La firma isotópica agrupada se compara con la concentración esperada de isotopólogos. Usando la comparación, se determina si bien los hidrocarburos presentes en la muestra se originan directamente de una roca madre o si bien los hidrocarburos presentes en la muestra han escapado de una acumulación bajo superficie. Se determina la temperatura de equilibrio de almacenamiento actual de la especie de hidrocarburo en la acumulación bajo superficie antes de escapar a la superficie. Se determina una ubicación de la acumulación bajo superficie. Esta información puede ser integrada con modelos de historial de cuencas subterráneas previamente taladradas para calibrar un modelo de cuenca.
