Abstract

Claim 1: A process for producing ethanol comprising the steps of: passing a gas stream comprising hydrogen and an alkanoic acid in the vapor phase through a hydrogenation catalyst to form a product comprising an alcohol and less than about 0.25% ether based on the total weight of the product, wherein the hydrogenation catalyst is produced by the process comprising the steps of: impregnation of a carrier modifier from ammonium metatungstate, tetrahydrated ammonium heptamolybdate, hydrated silicotungstic acid, phosphotungstic acid, silicomolibic acid, phosphomolibic acid, niobium oxalate hexahydrate or vanadium oxide in a support to form a first impregnated support; calcination of the first impregnated support to form a calcined support; impregnation of one or more active metals from one or more metal precursors in the calcined support to form a second impregnated support, wherein one or more active metals are selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium , platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium, titanium, zinc, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, tin, lanthanum, cerium, manganese and gold; and calcination of the second support impregnated to form the catalyst.
