Abstract

This refers generally to the removal of a vestigial element from a liquid hydrocarbon feed or charge. The liquid hydrocarbon feed, which contains the vestigial element, is mixed with the water together with a hydrocarbon soluble additive. While the mixture is produced, a compound, which is in some cases preferably insoluble, is formed by the hydrocarbon-soluble additive that chemically reacts with the vestigial element. A phase separation device, such as a desalination plant or an oil-water separator, receives the oil-water emulsion containing the compound and separates the mixture to produce the compound, the effluent brine and the effluent liquid hydrocarbon with a reduced concentration of the vestigial element compared to the concentration of the liquid hydrocarbon feed. In some embodiments, this refers to the removal of elemental mercury from a liquid hydrocarbon feed. An additive containing sulfur soluble in hydrocarbon, typically an organic polysulfide, is mixed with the liquid hydrocarbon feed and water. The hydrocarbon-soluble sulfur-containing additive reacts with the mercury, quickly forming an agglomeration of mercury sulfide which is then distributed with the effluent brine and the effluent liquid hydrocarbon.
